hehe, GW is the perfect game for beginners to online games. It is very user friendly, and yes the community is, for the most part, very helpful. Heck even after losing in a battle, you will almost always hear a GG or two. (GG = good game.) Also joining a friendly guild, like my guild (click the sig, ) greatly improves your playing environment.

Hmmmm, sounds like you're in for some fun

1. Depending on your previous gaming activity, you 'could' get addicted a bit. I mean, even though they were just offline RPG's, some of them had missions/quests that you just needed to finish .... and you 'did' finish them, only 10 hours later than planned. If you're someone that can't let things rest, I'd say you could get a little bit hooked on this game. Addiction makes no difference in offliners or onliners.

2. Cooperative Gaming is simple: I'm in need of just one teammember and you're in need of a team. That's it (in a very tight nutshell). If we team together, talk a bit and get to know eachother, that could be just enough to get you invited to a guild/friends-circle/whatever. You'll notice that some of us just like to help others play the game and make friends. Don't worry, we're everywhere.

3. Yes. This game will certainly have it's fair share of idiots, 1337-h4x0rzzZZ, grievers and Ego-builds. But so does your Real Life. You'll get used to it.

4. Usefull insight: when bored, read forum. That's all there is to it. It will help you a lot, but it will also raise more questions as you will get more knowledge about the game. First you'll wonder about your profession, after that you'll wonder about the SECOND professions, all the different attribute-lines and the myriad of skills. When you got that figured out, you'll be crying again when you read about the builds some of the members have come up with. It's just live and learn.

I would like to know about raids in this game. Compared to say EQ, what are raids like? Is there huge boss mobs that take a skilled and dedicated guild to take down? Or is it more PvP and guild fighting? At this point I dont understand the exact point of the game. Because for me in EQ and all the other MMORPGs I've played I gain max level, join or create a high end guild, and raid the hell outa all the content in the game. I'm hoping that aspect is still a high priority on the devs list, or I'm not sure this is the game for me. Can someone please give me some insight? Thanks!

It depends on what map/mission you are currently playing I guess. From my experience, most of the groups you play with will not have a problem waiting a couple minutes during the PVE missions. Some groups may even take a small break or breather in between missions. Since you don't lose anything when your character die, at worst you will lose some time and had to repeat the mission anyway.

Some people may get turned off if you have to leave during PvP. GW PvP is team based so losing one person can hurt the team. And GvG (Guild vs Guild) battles are ranked, so it would be a good idea to make sure you have as little interruption as possible during a PvP game. But in the end this is just a game, and most people would understand that RL>game.

Epidemic has a 2 second cast. How easy is it to get interrupted in PvE while casting it if you are getting tooled on at the time by multiple mobs? Very easy? Sometimes happens? Seldom happens?

I have to say i feel the same way. I love starting games RIGHT when they are released, and then months or year later hearing somone say "hi you look good could you help me a bit?"

I fourtunatly got to start SWG and had fun helping etc... though the game started to have issues so now i look for new games hopefully GW is gonna be it!

So to get back on track, Omer, i have the same mind set!

But i also have a question, will there be guild battles that are more than 8v8? Because as of now i have 9 friends (10 including me) that are planning on getting the game... i Understand that 8 is max group memebers but is it different for Guild battles? I might be missing somthing but i could sware that i saw a screen shot or two that had more then 8 peeps.

BTW, Pad11 dont be worried at all about the community i have played my fair share of MMO's and of corse you got the people who are just big jerks but the nice people WELL out number the grumps.

MMORPG's are a gas you'll like it, just invloves a little planning on your part before you enter in a major guild battle. But as far as minor intteruptions such as phone calls, kids, or nature, just tell your group you will BRB (be right back), and just say what you need to do, they will understand. Worst thing you can do is not tell them anything and just leave to do whatever. Because then they gonna run in think'n they got your support and find out when its too late you arn't there.

Not yet ingame, waiting for release, but i have some questions regarding guilds i couldnt find the answers to.

1) Is there a max membercount to a guild ?
2) Is there a min membercount to a guild ?

3) Can guilds of say 10 attack guilds of say 3 ?
4) Can guilds of say 3 attack guilds of say 10 ?

5) Can guildnames be changed once a guild is created ?

6) Is there a way to see if one character is an "alt char" of the same
player ?

You can go out in the wilderness and gain exp. by killing mobs. The wilderness (aka zones) in Guild Wars is instanced. You will not encounter other players outside of towns and other gathering locations. If you want to "grind" exp. or do quests in the zones, you can form a group in your guild hall or in any other gathering location like a city, and then "zone into" a wilderness zone with your party. Your party will be the only party in the zone, so you don't have to worry about being PK'd while doing PVE or being trained, or people kill stealing, or other people camping mobs. The mobs do not respawn unless you zone out and then zone back in.

Regarding crafting, there is not any player crafting that I'm aware of at this time. You can collect various materials like bone, wood, cloth, etc. and take these to an NPC crafter who will offer various pieces of armor that he can craft along with the required gold and materials. You can acquire the materials via drops or from salvaging items that mobs drop. For example, a mob may drop a staff after you kill it. If you salvage the staff, you will probably receive a wood plank which is a raw material.

Actually, I got this wrong. I just logged in and realized my errors. There is no option for facial hair. Different types of facial hair are part of the different faces. Here are the options:
Name (first and last, or multi-part like "Conan The Barbarian or Matt Smith" but not a single name like "Conan")

On the preorder box, it says it reduces unpleasantries like traveling time. How does it do this?

Also, I was once a player of FFXI. The main reason I quit was that the quests are insanely difficult to do at the level you actually need to complete them. I recall specifically needing the help of someone twice my level and three hours to do one-third of a quest that would give me access to the only area that was appropriate for me to level. Does GW do this, too, or are its developers rational human beings?

Ok, I have yet to play guild wars, or even hear much about it. I was unfortunate enough to miss all the open events, and I'm thinking about buying the game. I'm not sure though. A couple things that I'd want to consider are;

dual classes;
are tehy allowed? i know you gain skill points beyond level 20 (what are skill points? class skill points?) so would it be beneficial to, let's say, crate a paladin type character, can deal melee damage and heal, go monk/warrior. Use the warrior to build a base up till about lvl 19, and then switch to monk and build upon that? It's just confusing.

Skills;
what type of farming abilities are there? (eg blacksmithing, tailoring, crafting.)

Classes;
there seems to be limited clases available, does this mean everything is in the strategies of how a battle is played? and are there the "clear cut" ways that EVERYOn uses but just who can outlast who?

Questing;
As with all mmo's, after your each cap, the game is about the items. is questing all about running the same quests over for that rare drop to give you the edge?

That's about all I have for now. I'm a serious team player but functionality is a must have for an mmo if you ask me. I'm just curious about how that can possibly work with the limited info I have seen.

dual classes are the norm with about 75 skills per profession
attribute points that affect a skill line make them stronger

secondaries can be switched later in game
i am now playing an elementalist /monk with success also have done ranger/monk
no grinding out logs or mining

all crafting is done for you when you bring the needed raw materials (hides, iron ingots,glittering dust Etc) and pay the NPC crafter for what youwant

raw materials are gotten by using a salvage kit on drops

no game breaking uber items to break game balance SKILL from start to finish

there are so many possible combos when skill loadout is factored in

you can only take 8 skills at a time into a mission or quest or explorable area which means plan ahead and mostly be surprised when somebody or something pulls a surprise on you

I also enjoy helping others. I was a guide at EQ for a while, and it was extremely rewarding, until they changed the guide program to more of an entertainment function. I like the idea of coming into a new game at the start. And I've always enjoyed being in a guild or leading a guild and doing all the "newbie" quests with new people, even if it's just doing them over and over again for me. And Guild Wars seems to have so much variety for different kinds of play that the options for interacting with the game and players seems limitless. I'm truly looking forward to this experience.

hello there,

im a future GuildWars player and was just woundering a few things as i was reading this awsome forum.

first question:
I read somewhere you get 10 attribute points per lvl, but, when i played the game for one of the gw event weekends, my ranger was only geting maybe 5 attribute points per lvl. so, question is, do you get 10 per lvl if you duel class or was i just tripping or something?

second question:
i have noticed almost everyone is going duel classes, has anyone thought about NOT going duel classes? i realize this question is prob best for the area where classes are talked about, but seeing how i am new to the game, i think it could fit here IMO. reason i ask, is because i had read on quildwars site that staying with your primary doesnt nerf you what so ever yet everyone seems to be all about going duel where as myself, i think for my main, i plan to go 100% ranger and nothing else.

I haven't actually played the game yet, but I did have this same question when I started looking into GW, so I've collected some of the answers I've heard. The answer I heard most often is that of course you can go ranger/ranger, but that taking a different secondary gives you so many extra options it would be a shame to pass up on it. That is, if I understand correctly, I could play a mesmer/mesmer and have access to those 4 spell lines, or I could play a mesmer/monk and have access to 7 different spell lines. My mesmer/monk might still go with all mesmer spells, but why not have the possible option to throw in some healing if I find it useful?

The other answer I often see is that if you plan on doing PvP a lot, having a secondary makes your character a lot more unpredictable. If you're a monk/elementalist, your opponent has to wonder, do you use your secondary for mostly buffing and defense, or is there a chance you're going to open a can of fiery whoop-ass on them? If you're a monk/monk, everyone pretty much knows what your character can do. So if you want to keep PvP opponents on their toes, a secondary is a good idea.

OK, and now we wander into an area I find very murky: skill acquisition. If I get this wrong, someone please correct me quickly. I believe that once you get skills on a character, you have the option to use those skills with any character you create. So if I get a mesmer/monk to 20 and make a monk/ranger, the monk/ranger will have access to all the monk skills the mesmer/monk got. If that's so, it would be wiser not to play a pure ranger/ranger if you plan on playing another primary class later (though all it saves you is some time, really).

So that's three reasons I've gleaned to have a secondary. If you're going to do mostly PvE, and it's important to you to be a pure Ranger (I know for some people it may be, for RP or other reasons), and if you don't mind playing the game again with another character to unlock their skills later, there's no real reason not to make a ranger/ranger, as far as I can tell.

10 / level
than 15 / level

there is no benefit to single profession and you lose flexibility

you can have both professions but only develop the primary if you wish

since there is no penalty for the second why limit yourself

later in the game you can switch secondaries if you wish to as well

hi Im new to GW I just pre ordered it Monday but I didnt get to do the beta weekend I missed it. I was wondering if you guys could tell me a bit more about dual classes like how the primary and secondary function or if you could point me to a place that has more info for that. I did take a look at classes and skills and such so now I narrowed it down to one possible dual class but from what Ive heard of primary and secondary classes Im confused about WHICH to make prim or second. The possible outcomes are necro/elemental or elemental/necro

Hi all, first of all I want to say this seems like a nice forum! It's great seeing people be nice to each other and use proper spelling.

Anyway, as usual I jump on the wagon at the last minute and missed all the beta weekends. I just preordered the game (I have to try just about every MMORPG available!), but I still don't know much about the game other than the basics, so I'm looking for opinions.

I've played lots of MMORPGs but none have really seemed to.. fit. I played EQ for 5 years and haven't found a game since that feels right. I like to solo a lot (I prefer groups for events, not just everyday stuff). I love guilds, but often it ends up that my guild members put pressure on me to keep up with them.. I have a tendency to powergame, then burn out, so I fall behind people. I love doing quests, but in the case of WoW I started feeling like they were work (kill 10 of this monster, deliver this here, over and over). Also, I know nothing about PvP. The idea of PvP in groups certainly sounds interesting though, I do like games that require tactics.

So, is this game maybe what I'm looking for? I've been looking for so long!

if you cant find real live people to fill out the slots on a mission/explorable area /etc the (free) NPC henchmen do a surprisingly good job

OK, and now we wander into an area I find very murky: skill acquisition. If I get this wrong, someone please correct me quickly. I believe that once you get skills on a character, you have the option to use those skills with any character you create. So if I get a mesmer/monk to 20 and make a monk/ranger, the monk/ranger will have access to all the monk skills the mesmer/monk got. If that's so, it would be wiser not to play a pure ranger/ranger if you plan on playing another primary class later (though all it saves you is some time, really).

So that's three reasons I've gleaned to have a secondary. If you're going to do mostly PvE, and it's important to you to be a pure Ranger (I know for some people it may be, for RP or other reasons), and if you don't mind playing the game again with another character to unlock their skills later, there's no real reason not to make a ranger/ranger, as far as I can tell.

im sorry, but i dont see how you could say that there is no benefit to sticking with a single profession. all the classes seem very well built and i do not think that Arenanet would say staying with your 1 perfession doesnt nerf if it really does nerf you. i see the option of taking up a secondary class as a way for players to furture costumize their toons and allow them to become pretty creative with what they do with them. yes, i know there is a limit to combinations but as some have said, takeing up 2, you get an even greater amount of options, but that can be a down fall if players dont realize that specing in multimple lines can be a bad thing. also, from what i have seen from the duel prof builds, most of the builds seem to use 1 or 2 spells from the other proffesion and only 1 line. so how can you say that sticking with your one class is a bad thing? not to mention the fact you only get to use 8 spells when in a mission.

now i realize i do not have alot of exp in GW, but over the event weekend, as i was playing the ranger i had made, i really loved just useing "ignight arrows" with "duel shot" and "power shot," sometimes i would even use "read the winds" with it and my damage was just crazy. worked even better when the mobs got close to eachother. so how can it be a bad thing to stick with a 100% ranger?? espically if i went for a spec that was high marksmenship with expertise and wilderness.

now im not trying to argue, nor say you are wrong, im just trying to understand how you can say there is no benifit to having a single profession.

it seems that the people with the most experience with the game who have been playing every day for many months (alpha testers) are of the opinion that you can find one or two skills in your secondaty profession which will be greatly beneficial

monk for healing perhaps? if not ignore your monk side entirely

if you wish to put all attribute points into your primary profession you can

that doesnt keep you from using a very helpful second profession skill at its base level

if you want to you can put everything into primary attributes as well as only using primary skills on your skill bar

i only repeated the experts opinion that a secondary profession has no penalty on your primary profession so why limit yourself?

w0rd, i see what you guys mean now :P i guess what it really comes down to, all that really matters is finding builds that go best with your playing style. thx guys
