Hi guys,

(excuse my english, i do my best)

I would like to know more before buying the game.

I have played other MMORPGS and i like this kind of games, but there is one thing i don`t like. I don`t like spending hours, day after day, killing monsters. In all the games i played i ended up in a party killing the same monsters during hours. That part makes me bored, becouse in my opinion there is no challenge, it`s very easy. The best player is the one that played more time and/or has more luck to get better drops, but i saw no skill.

So finally i found a game that claims to be based on player`s skill rather than time. is this true???

How are you supposed to get lvl 20? killing monsters? how long does it take?, becouse if it takes 6 months, with 2 hours/day tine playing, then i will probably get bored again.

Can u lvl up by killing players?

As u see i know nothing about the game, so any comment would be apreciated.

I think i have a general idea about the pvp part. What worries me is the pve part, i find it very boring in other mmorgs. Just don`t like the idea of spending tons of hours killing computer controled monsters before i get to be high lvl enought to fight players.

Thnaks to anyone that replies.

part of answer

there are 25 missions (non pvp) to start
there are 60-70 explorable areas (non pvp, not small) to start with additional content to be added by streaming in

fron GW

Guild Wars, in contrast, is based around your skill as a player. Our maximum level is twenty and you hit that very quickly, after about 20-30 hours of play. ,We call that 'The Point of Ascension'. Almost all of the content in the game and in the future Chapters is only available to Ascended characters, which means we don't have to worry about providing different levels of content. All the good stuff will be available to everyone. It's not our intent to force people onto the levelling up treadmill, so the level cap in Guild Wars is almost meaningless.

20-30? No, I think it would be like 40-50... I played that long in the BWE and got to 10..

Anyways, Yes you can get xp for fighting and killing other people in the arena. I've actually got 1 1/2 level for doing that.

Yes, It's more skill than time. I'd estimate, If you really wanted to get everything good for your character in the game possible, It would probably take around 100-120 hours.. Depending on your luck, But, As I said before, It's only around 40 of those hours leveling.

Thanks for the links man. I was able to figure what to use as my primary considering the role I often like to play. In a lot of games I've always gone for both style and effectiveness with OFFENSE. I've decided to go with elementalist as my primary and Ill play around with all the secondaries to see what helps add more style and effectiveness, gonna be a tight race between mesmer and necro Im sure. Thanks again guys. Man I cant wait to play this once Im able too! Oh yeah one last question. Does anyone know what 3D software these guys decided to use to model the characters? Like Maya, 3ds Max, XSI, etc?

It's not that hard to get to 20. I got to 13 during the beta and wasn't on all day everyday. Keep in mind that when you first start to play, you have to learn combat, questing, etc (basic mechanics). Once you are experienced you could probably level to 20 in under 30 hours no problem.

XP for killing in PVP rocks!

Also, you can create a PVP only character that does not have to level (though you have to unlock items and skills).

I think the 25 missions thing must be major story missions or somesuch, because I only got level 10 or so during the beta event through pve, and I got about 40 missions by that point.

Getting to level 20 will take you roughly 48 hours of play time in a PvE environment. This may seem like a lot, except when you consider the amount of leveling in other games that simply doesn't exist in Guild Wars.
While you can level up using PvP, it will take much longer. And you will have to do a few missions of PvE before you can really get into the PvP side of the game anyway. Believe me, you won't find it boring. It's much more interesting than any PvE I have ever played.

Yes, 20 is the max level in GW, though that is by no means the end of the game. At 20 you can enter PvP on a level playing field with all other 20s, or you can keep exploring PvE missions to keep gathering skills and abilities.

You will also keep gaining points that you can use to re-vamp your character if you wish.

You might want to look at the Sticky thread "Levels, leveling, level caps, and level 20" for a more in-depth discussion of the pros and cons of such a system. (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=2662). If I could vote "Please don't ever raise the cap" 100 times, I would. This way if I can ever wheedle my friends into playing GW with me I'm only a few weeks away from being able to group with them, no matter how much longer I've played. After EQ and WoW, I want to kiss whoever came up with that.

Hello, I'm new to these forums and have one question I'd like to ask.

For some info, I'm playing WoW right now and just last night realized that Guild Wars is coming out soon. Last year I tried the Guild Wars World Preview during E3, and I have to say I didn't have a lot of fun. Not sure whether I was dong something wrong or just a series of misfortunate events.

Anyway, I want to see how Guild Wars is now and how it will be when it is released. My question is whether there will be a Free Trial for Guild Wars around the time of its release? I want to try the game once again to see if i would consider coming to it.

Simply put, I want to try Guild Wars without having to spend any money, because I don't want to buy the game just to find out I don't like it.

Thanks

well, i might be new to GW, and only got to play on one BWE, buuut, remember this, you dont pay to play online for GuildWars

also, i would have to suggest you do whatever you do when it comes to finding out what games you wanna buy. as for myself, i try to read up on the game and go from there, mostly i care more about how the game works and if it seems like something i might enjoy, i dont base anything off of screenshots and stuff like that. for me, i wanted to get this game before even being able to take part in the last BWE. but after playing it, for me, its a must have in my collection of games, i can really see this game becoming one of the best games ive ever payed money for. but then agian, i put high hopes in the fact its the orignal blizzard crew

Thanks, I guess for now I'll just watch for official reviews of the game once it is released.

I think it might be in good interest of ArenaNet to offer a Free Trial sometime after the game's release. Would bring more people in I think. I'm just sad I didn't get in on the beta sooner.

Well, as it was said before, their "Free Trail" of the game was offered up to those who preordered, they've been doing these Beta weekend events since last year if im not mistaken. granted i had just found out because i had forgot all about the game and was bizzy doing other things in life, but i was still able to catch it in time to join the last BWE. in all honesty im not so sure about them needing to have a free trail, seeing how you do not pay a monthly fee for the game. ya it would suck to buy the game and realize you dont like it and thus a waste of money, but also look at it as a regular game just with no single player. i bought Diablo2 when i didnt even know a whole lot about the game and i ended up playing that for nearly 3 or 4 yrs.... hell, i bought StarCraft based on what it said on the box, i knew nothing at all about that game and i still play it form time to time.

True, but even non-MMO games have demo's most of the time. Free trial is just an MMO demo. I didn't find out about the pre-order offers untill recently, so I was too late.

ya that is very true, and most of the time Demos come out way before the final product.... hmmm /shrug

i guess the best thing for you to do is to read up on the game, check out the info at this forum and the guildwars websit, www.guildwars.com and see if it just so happens to hint at anything you might like.

about the person reffering to dual weilding...

I heard they didn't implement it because of the balancing issues, and because then one class would have a different dynamic in damage and animation, just would have to be implemented via a new class. So implementing a new class would be hard and derive balancing issues.

In resonse to the person saying the Beta Weekends were horrible long ago...I beg to differ! I believe you played the first one where it was a preview event for E3 and you could only but walk around certain areas and your character didn't have much skills to use. This was just a test for E3 and only had a couple quests implemented, the newer Beta Weekend Events were much better and showed some of the story that comes with questing.

The voiceovers were nice too, even though there's no lipsync like EQ2. Overall, I think the game is great. It loads quick, keeps you awake, and doesn't require monthly payments.

If you like diablo-esque type games you should give it a try, and if your a fan of the Ultima series you will love the PvP. Otherwise, give a try for the simple fact that it is without monthly payments.

You cant make a char until the servers open, and sence you pre-ordered that will be the 27th.

Ok I have kind of a dumb question. I was readin through archives and stuff and I heard about skill points. How exactly do you get skill points and is there a limit? Im sorry if its a dumb question but I missed out on Beta. Any info regardin skill POINTS is appreciated.

You get skill points every time you level, for certain quests, and periodically after you reach level 20 (not really sure if there's a limit). These skill points can be used to purchase skills from Skill Trainers at outposts (each skill costs 1 skill point and some amount of gold).

can someone describe the payment system for this game?

Naoru Shingen

Ascalonian Squire

uh what payment system? dude you just buy the game and then you can play pretty much forever with no subscription fee. You can choose to buy expansions if you get tired of usin the 6 classes and stuff. Youll still be able to play and compete with other chars even if you dont buy the expansions.

And as for skill points thanks for the explanation man. I remember reading that eventually one char can get all the skills. But would you happen to know exactly how periodically you get skill points after 20? i know that atrribute points are 200 once at 20 and refund points are at every 250 exp but if anyone can find out the trigger for skill points after 20 Id be grateful.

Im glad I pre ordered. Ill wake myself up early on wednesday at 5 to start playin a few hours before I have to leave school ^_^ Maybe take a sick day if its really good.

from fansite friday it stated a majority of skills would also be available as quest rewards as well as from trainers which would cut down on the needed number of skill points

quote

Oh, and lastly, heres an additional bit of good news about skills: The majority of skills will be available as quest rewards. This does not mean to say that they will be available only as such a reward, of course; you will still be able to get skills in other ways. But if you go on a quest, you may receive a skill as your reward.

Not yet but possibly in later chapters/expansions there will be more variety to races and classes. Im hoping it wont be the lame elf/dwarf crap but rather something from their own imagination.

i was going to be a monk/necro or monk/elementalist so i was wondering, would i get smoked in PvP? being healer/support.

and i heard the community is relatively nice, but are monks who mostly do healing like the kid of the group? though the healer is as important as everyone else,i've seen in other games like people dont really care about the healer till they're gonna die then start screaming at him and after its all done ignore him again. ofcourse there are always some idiots but in general how is it like?

thanks.

For the monk question:

Check the Monk Basics thread for more information on builds and focuses for healers.

The community is superb, at least as I've experienced it, but the only thing I have to judge it against is D2 so I wouldn't really know. Healers are not ignored, they are snapped up into parties quickly and (mostly) treated as valuable assets, as Henchmen Healers are poor substitutes. Healers can't really be ignored because they are constantly active and you can always see their results, but when the team starts to fall it is the monk that gets blamed over everyone else (unless a warrior just blatantly runs into a mob of 50 Charr, but, on rare occassions, the monk is blamed for this, as well).

gollim grey, did you perhaps mean that post for the introduction thread?

SoulHunter, the Beta weekend was April 15th through 17th. People are still posting screenshots from this event, but the Beta weekends are officially over. The next Pre-Order event starts on the 27th.
