Monk Question
God of Anarchy
Alrighty im gonna create a monk what kind of monk should i be,i dont like healing very much but i dont mind doing it evry once in an awhile i would like to know a little bout zealots fire oe w/e that smiting skill...and know the big QUESTION-what should i choose for my secondary???and give me some names for my character <hardest part<heh well plz leave me some comments,THANKS!
HellKite
well healing is most needed but a divine protector is very nice as well, secondary for monks .. hmm.. good question. My monk is lvl 20, (divine healer), I started with Monk/Nec but soon relized I didn't like Nec w/ Monk. So I did the desert quest and made Monk/Mesmer. I really like the combination of the two because mesmers seem to always steal energy and have good energy consumption, and monks are made around energy. Mine is named Bulletproof Legend.. you can work off that.
God of Anarchy
thx...for thr reply, but you see the only reason for my hate for healing is beacuse everyone usally treats you like a dog,a pet,A HEALING PET!...and i really dont wanna be played like that but the down hill side to healing is if someone is being a dick to you,you just dont heal them and let them die...besides i like smiting
HellKite
Smiting .. seriously isnt needed.. I used smiting (yes it is fun) but thats what warriors are for.. Damage.. Healing isnt a necessity for Monks, If not healing than protection. Monks are the most needed characters in the game right now, healers I should say. Yes you get treated poorly sometimes by people that don't understand you dont have to heal them. Also you cant heal your whole party a lot at the same time (heal party does about 60 with 12 healing prayers). So I'd go with protection or healing, with divine as your alternate points in. Also throw in some smiting if its needed or just make a warrior, ranger, or ele for damage. Hope I helped lol
God of Anarchy
you havehlped me out very much im gratefull, but wut should my second prof. be?
HellKite
ele or mesmer you need the range. I like mesmer because of energy steal and very good consumption of energy
God of Anarchy
Well...i gusse ill go with ele,thx for everything you've been a BIG hlp,thx agian!,
anyone else wanna throw in there opinions?

I wouldn't go Elementalist, especially if you're going to be a smiter. Mesmers and Necromancers have better energy management spells and utility spells. Plus, if you're going to be using Zealot's Fire, you're going to be casting spells on allies, more than casting damage spells on enemies, so Elementalist won't help much.
HellKite
I wouldnt go nec i used nec .. didnt like on monk

Mesmer is a good combo with Monk for the energy stealing. I use Channeling a lot which steals energy from nearby enemies everytime you cast a spell (and you will find that for a Monk you need some form of energy management)
Ele is not a bad secondary as you get the Glyphs to help you with that too.

Dont go ranger *it blows* here is why....
My reasons for taking a ranger as a secondry were so I can use the pet as a shield. Not a good plan this is because to effectively manage a pet you have to have at least 3-4 slots leaving only a few to play with for you monk skills.
I heald my way to 20. And about the healing pet thing... If some one gave me lip I just stopped healing them outright. People must learn to respect each other when in a party, every body has their roll and there is no need for some of the crap I have seen monks put up with.. I have been playing my other char (necro) and felt sorry for the monks that were healing our party cos they were getting so much shit from the tanks. So just dont heal them..
BTW when you get to 20 DO change to smiting and head back to springs its heaps of fun using sheild of judgement+Bal Aura on those damn skeleton archers
Given my choice again I would take Mes.

or you can allways choose monk as a secondary profesion, that way plp would not expect you to heal.
As far as monk / x, mesmer or necro works good, for healers.
Monk / x mesmer/necro/elementalist for protector.

warrior for secondary for it's sprint ability... that 8 sec. boost is always a relief

i have a monk and am trying to do the last two missions for ascension. i have been a monk/ele. the only 2 elementalist skills i've looked at were gale, for group knockdown, and the one for running faster, can't remember the skill name.
through experience, i've realized that energy management, like others have said, is important. i've gotten my skills down to mostly 5 pt healing and protection spells. i still start to run out of energy. i am considering mesmer or necro for my new secondary. with mesmer, i'd then have energy stealing, but i wonder how close i have to be to steal energy. necromancer has blood spells that increase energy and health regen.
i think it all comes down to personal preference. good luck with your choice.

I play a monk / mesmer, but I currently do not use any mesmer skills. I've learned to conserve energy during fights, so unless they aggro more than one mob there is nothing to worry about. Though I also conserve energy by playing to protection skills as a secondary. Aegis and protective spirit can do a lot to conserve energy at the right times.
God of Anarchy
the secondary i picked was a warrior,i was playing with a monk/warrior today and he was a amazing tank,i could not beleave it he was right up there with the real tankers(warriors)taking down just as many as the warriors, soo i built one is his honor, though he did take more dmg than the warriors...but whatever,im only lvl 6 no telling if i will stick with him yet

Since monks have a tremendous amount of enchantments to toss out, this usually means your teammates will get immense hitpoint pools, which means you can delay healing them to avoid overhealing, thereby improving your energy:healing ratio considerably, and generally keeping them alive a lot longer when facing unexpected damage.

Im currently Mo/Me and i like it. Im healing and little smite.5. just for self protection. when your stuck in that group that goes aggros them then runs away so they gang you. and for mesmer stuff. I cant decide between using Domination magic (chaos storm, backfire) or inspiration magic (energy tap, channeling). When i have inspiration on me. I wish i had my domination because i never run out of energy. But then when i go domination my group is stupid. like walking in poison or attacking when they have empathy on so im blowin all my energy on them. and then i wish i had my inspiration magic. So mesmer seems to be popular. Try things out. see what fits you.

My advice is to be a protection monk. Being a smiter is a bad idea because smiting just isn't very good. ANet, in my opinion, needs to make smiting significantly better, so that it's at least worth playing. It's fun, but smiters are basically only useful against undead. As for healing, everyone loves healing monks... but they also treat them horribly. People expect healing monks to be able to keep them alive, even if they rush in and aggro three patrols at the same time and start taking 500 DPS. When they die, a lot of people tend to ctrl+click their life bar over and over, even if you're in the middle of a fight, completely dry, and people around you are still dying. Then they yell at you for not being a good healer. While not everyone is like this, far from it, there are enough people like it to not make healing all that enjoyable. Plus, you don't even really get to watch the game, you just watch the little red bars. The reason I advise protector is first off, there aren't enough protector monks out there. Protection, especially at the later levels, is really, really useful. However, not many people choose to do it. It takes a bit more thought than healing, as you can't just look at red bars and click one and click a spell. However, it's worth it, and if you bring a good protector and a good healer, a party can live through a lot. However, my advice is to try out both protecting and healing, and smiting if you really want to, and just find out what you like best.

My secondary is a Mesmer - In quests I use Energy Tap to keep my energy up and might add Inspired Hex for fun. I have to experiment more with some of the mesmer skills - e.g. using Echo to maintain Aegis etc.
Mesmer is a very satisfying secondary.

I just started a mo/me last night and i LOVE it. This is my second go around and now that i know how to play, she is more enjoyable then my R/E. cant wait to go post burn and join some groups.

Mo/R should be a respected choice? That's what I've heard. I've also seen Mo/W working... But just because you have warrior as your secondary, doesn't necessarily mean you tank.
Can't think of any names... wouldn't dare to propose any anyway, pretty much up to your likings.
edit- Oh you already made a Mo/W. Well, good luck with it
Zilm
Yup, what's posted is the same old story..
But, there are planty of spots to go farming as a solo smiter and that's about the only time you can do it.

I made a Mo/Me about a week ago and I think it is great. I run Smiting main though. Healing is fine if your in a good group, but if your not I will only do it a minimal amount. Mes is a great secondary, but at the same point all classes have something to offer.
IF you want to sprint I'd say go with Ranger since they have 3 sprint spells and like a total of 5 or 6 Block/avoid stances as well. Dryders Defense is insain when dealing with Elemt.
