Merged: Now that you've played, Kurzick or Luxon
MoMan
Just interested in seeing which faction people are going to side with now that everyone (persumably) has played both.
Personally, I'm going with Kurzick (hopefully my guild agrees!). The Jade Sea is cool, but I just love the darkness and atmosphere of the Petrified Forest. Plus all the Kurzick npcs look cool.
What do you think?

I'm going Kurzick, had them planned for some time. I think many of my guildies are going Kurzick, too. I found the Kurzicks to be a tad...uglier (ok, a lot uglier) than their appearances in concept art. Still, I enjoy their social pyramid, and their culture is very interesting. The forest is beautiful, too.
Joh
I planned Luxon, played one quest (got 250 factions), then switched to Kurzick. Why, I can't remember but I stayed there for most of the weekend and then went back to Luxon. I must say I prefer Kurzick (all guildies went Luxon though -.-). Quests was way more fun and there seemed to be more of them aswell.

I've played both sides a bit, and I must certainly say that while Kurzick appealed to me far more in concept, I'm undoubtedly liking the Luxons more in the implementation. Their world is vibrant and full of life, something I expected more from the forest dwelling artisans than the nomadic barbarians.
I was incredibly surprised to find that the Jade Sea areas had more plant life than the forest. The forest floor is most often covered in black dirt, with a random patch of green or a bush... the Luxon side terrain (that isn't frozen jade) is covered in beautifully lush grasses and flowers. It's so much more refreshing to explore through.
Don't get me wrong. I love black things, especially black clothing, but there's only so long I can stare at a game screen consisting of shades of grey and black. I'll take the shimmering Jade Sea over the petrified forest any day... though the Kurzick architecture is great. I just wish it wasn't so darned gloomy everywhere you go (and yeah, I've seen some of the less-gloomy EAs deeper in, but they're still rather drab compared to the Luxon side).
Also, while it's to be expected with a war going on, the Kurzicks seem to have a really bad attitude towards the Luxons that's irritating to put up with. They have a lot of snooty name-calling that's rather dull and unimaginative (filthy barbarians, Luxon scum, blah blah blah). The extent of the Luxon's Kurzick-hate that I've seen is some amusing joke telling and some blunt statements of the truth. For example, "What's the difference between a block of petrified wood and a Kurzick skull? The shape! Ha!" or "The Kurzicks think that their art and music will earn them the favor of the gods, but we Luxons know that it is only strength that matters." That last is all too ironic, and thus hilarious, with the way the Hall of Heroes and favor systems work.
Besides, who couldn't fall in love with those sleepy-eyed giant turtles that wall off the towns?
I do like the way the Kurzicks' houses are set-up, as in the families not the buildings. It gives than some interesting history that the Luxon's brief background of the current clan-leaders can't quite compare to, but it's a trade I'm willing to make for the more interesting exploration.

I'm going to wait a month or two before making a final decision. I think both were cool, but right now I'm just too caught up in prophecies play to devote much time to factions. Maybe in a month that will change. My final take on Factions, however? Obviously A-Net put quite a bit of work into it, and while I don't like some things, overall the game is definitely worth getting. Kurzick or Luxon really doesn't matter at this point. I think we're more looking forward to the alliance side of thing so we can get some good instruction on PvP play by guilds who do that mostly.
Phoenix Arrows
I've really been liking Kurzicks a lot. I tried Alliance Battles from both sides and I've got to say, Kurzicks are winning a lot more often than Luxons ^^. Also, although the darkness may get irritating, the Kurzick places are pretty cool. My guild is Kurzick, but I sort of swayed our guild leader to go that way ^^. We have a pretty good Alliance rating too. 496 last time I checked. We own this Ludgaris Conservatory (spell check ^^). Never been there yet, but seems like we're pretty into Kurzicks. I think we are going to become Kurzicks when Factions comes out.
But anyways, even in the Alliance Battle map that favors the Luxons, we win there about 3/4 times. Kurzicks seem to have more skilled players, while Luxons have people who like how they sound. I really don't care about that, and I would rather kill people than get killed from looking at the scenery ^^.
Anyways, KURZICKS FTW!

Kurzicks all the way. As soon as I discovered we could pledge our guild's allegiance, I did so.
I'm absolutely in love with the Kurzick architecture, especially House zu Heltzer itself. The Vasburg Armory is another favorite, and Melandru's Hope is probably my favorite EA in the whole game, as far as looks go.

I joined Luxon since my guild decided to be them, I like the jade sea and all but would ruther join Kurzicks with their creepy forests and looks, not to mention that Luxons are really good at quitting in Alliance battles and get their a55 handed on a plate alot.
lg5000
Oh man.. if I have to choose the side my guild picks... I might have to quit on them. I prefer Kurzick for some of my chars, and Luxon for the others, but.. if I had to choose sides for all of them, it'd have to be Kurzick, simply because of the german influence of their names and culture.

I like the Luxons, the environment is much better in my opinion. The Kurzicks seem.. well, not as appealing to me.
koneko
Kurzick. "Creepy forests" are more appealing to me than a "boring sea of jade." The quests seem to be more difficult on the Kurzick side, but who knows for sure.
And for some reason, I've come to associate Luxons with pirates.
I hate pirates. Arrr.

i hate kappas... i wish i went kurzick... but then again both sides missions involve running around lots of critters.. but are useless

I played both sides, Luxon first. Got max faction for both so I could do the quests you get from those.
I didn't do all the Kurzick quests, was only concerned with getting the 10k faction. I made sure to do the Black Moa one though. Nice pet for my A/R.
The 10k faction quests are tough, henchmen just don't cut it. Finally got a group for then Luxon one, well 5 out of 8 anyway - but we made it through.
I think I did all the Luxon quests, after I got both 10k quest is when I cashed in some faction.
I like Luxons - just love those turtle cannons. Though the Kurzicks are interesting, and the Dredge who tunneled through the world from the Shiverpeaks.
But overall, they will band together to fight Shiro. So I don't think it matters in the end which side you choose.

It sounded like the Luxons are more evil, or at least in the sense that they value back-stabbingness. Every story I read from their Historian was about how their captains betrayed their way to the top, except for that captain who overthrew her betrayer brother. Sheesh. It sounds like a magnet for leavers and griefers...
The Kurzicks seem like the society of ancient Rome, specializing in different areas that, when combined, make their civilization wise, their loyalty to one another strong, and their architecture glorious.
It seems like the Luxon appeal is 'Luxons: Join us because jade sea looks cool. Don't turn your back to anyone, and stab your neighbor's back if the opportunity arises. May the best traitor win.'
It seems like the Kurzick appeal is 'Kurzicks: Join us and help improve our society, we find value in everything. We appreciate any help and contribution you may offer.
I did like how the areas in Luxon territory look, nice and green and lively. Definitely more cool screenshots to take there. But I didn't like the people, NPCs or players. I'd rather join Kurzicks and have a less-cool petrified forest but more cooperative people to group with.

Luxons, however my guild is devided 50/50 atm. Vote is still ongoing though. I'll go with the side the guild goes with off course.

i m just wondering can i play all the quest in one side first,
then quit and play all quest on the other side...

I doubt it, Faction is account-tied.

Is the faction quests going to be tied to what side your guild leader chooses? If so, this would prevent sabotage from those scummy Luxon freaks.

Luxon, I didn't even go into the Kurzick Areas, I was totally blown away by the Luxon lands/sea, I also enjoy the vibrant nature of the towns. But ultimately, I can't stand religious zealotry. So Kurzicks are out of the question.

You could get 10k luxon faction in 20 minutes in the pe. The Luxon area, while more colorfull is way easier imo, and they are just scums. Seriously, if you did the quest where you are supposed to fight Kurzick elites in an honourable battle, you would be a true Kurzick.
I didnt really care about the Luxon first, but after doing the same quest on their side, I totaly dislike them now. They are like an angry lowlife mob yelling "kill them, kill them"....
Luxon sucks.

Kurzicks are baby-killers. See Gyala Hatchery.
So naturally I'm leaning towards Luxon.
Granted, I didn't get the chance to play the Eternal Grove mission, so I don't know what's the story on the Kurzick side. I've only made it as far as the Laviathan Pits on the Luxon side and Lutgardis Conservatory on the Kurzick. From what I've seen, Luxon land is much more lush and lively. Kurzick territory was just... dark, except for that area with the bright purple sky, that was nice. And the enemies are harder. I've also fought on both sides for Fort Aspenwood and the Jade Quarry, but those can go either way.

Have you ever seen or participated within a major war (in terms of real life- e.g. paintballing, mass online wars, and watched war films?)
if you did you will see that if an ally see's an opposing side approaching their terrority people will yell "kill them" (or something similar), it's not like they going to walk up to them and invite them home for a lunch and watch tv then duel it out in the sand box in their backyard.....
your logic seems somewhat unusual.....

Anet deserves a lot of credit for making two factions that are so well balanced in terms of appeal. It looks like each will manage to draw a lot of people. Also, this faction system may do a lot to make people care about the game world and storyline. Look already at people arguing over the morals of the two groups.
My guild decided to go with Kurzick, but we tried a lot of Luxon stuff too. I hope that in the final release there are quests that send you into enemy territory, because the jade sea was beautiful, and I would hate to never get to see it because of my faction choice.

Well, I'm leaning towards Luxons, although I found both areas enjoyable.
I played Luxons first, and only played the Kurzicks for a little last night, but I was struck by how Hostile the Kurzicks were to me! I even had to bribe someone to use their res shrine, even though I had no Luxon favor (new character), and I had a little Kurzick faction. Also, I liked the costumes of Luxon better, along with the turtles and awnings moving in the wind, the Luxon camps seemed much more ALIVE.
I must say, I found the Kurzick quests much harder (I gave up on the Black Moa quest at about 10:30 pm last night, figured it wasn't worth it because of the reset anyway). I did like the monsters better in the Kurzick areas, they looked much more alien and diverse than the creatures in the Luxon area. (Although I liked the new monsters from each area).
All in all, I just can't wait for the official release...
I think we'll be able to go to both areas, worse case scenario, you'll just have to spend all your Faction of one side to start with a clean slate (can someone confirm if this works?)
EDIT: Just realized, I never actually checked my Faction last night, I bet my new Character had carried over Faction from Luxons, and that's why the Kurzicks distrusted me...

I'm not keen at all on having to go with the faction my -guild- chooses, vote or not. I'll probably end up leaving if I have to go to Luxon.
Argen
Though I played both sides, I found that I enjoyed the Kurzick zones and NPCs a tad bit better. I think I might pick up a 2nd Factions account to play the Luxons though.
Harmony
I'm still not sure what my guild will go with; but for me, personally, its Kurzicks all the way!
LordDeArnise
Faction is account-tied. I found this out while working on my builds over the preview event.
Luxons have a great environment to run and fight in, plus you gotta like those gigantic turtles and it reminds me alot of the little islands of the South China Sea. However, while the Kurzick environment look creppy with harder quest and mobs (Dragon Moss seem to eat Assassins for lunch), the community seemed to be more cooperative over the course of the event.
Quest-wise, I have to say Luxon, but for the player community, I have to say Kurzick. I'll have to see what the guild will go with next month.

After having played both sides...
Luxon win 55%:45%
yes, Kurzick have these fascinating gothic buildings and that wonderful creepy forest...
But... TURTLES FTW!!!
Also, I could feel a lot more comforable having a cool drink sitting on the Jade Sea beach than by attending a Zombie party at House zu Helzer.

Charqus...I don't know what your smoking but I've won on average 8/10 of my battles with the Luxons..and I've played hours and hours. Not only that but its a health issue here. The Luxons not only have wicked pwning turtles but are also awesome pirate yahoos from hell... The Kurzicks are a disease religion brainwashing young children to do their bidding! What the hell is with the headresses?!?!

My impression is that Kurzicks are more leaning to the evil side than Luxon but the Kurzick armor is better looking than the Luxon so i'll go Kurzick.
Though I wish they had some towns that werent so dark.
Though I wish they had some towns that werent so dark.
Rancour
If I could ultimately make my own choice, I'd be neither.
The Luxons are, in my opinion, more like crooneys*/pirate hybrids than cool rebels. I don't really like pirates and they're capital is just way too gypsie-ish for me. I don't have anything against gypsies, but I don't exactly find it cool.
The Jade Sea is, as mentioned, awesome. It looks great and it's not as horribly gloomy as the Petrified Forest. Though I don't like turtles...
The Kurzicks have great buildings and the forest is super cool if it didn't lack "nice" spots as much as it does. My character fits better into this forest, but I still wish for some more clearings with atleast a TAD of sunshine.
Also, I do NOT like the concept of religious zealots and they may be slightly too gothic (eventhough the armor/weapons they have ROCKS, hands down) for me. However, it's just a game so the religion-thing doesn't really get me down and I'm not exactly forced to stay in the gothic capital all the time; I can just travel somewhere else.
The choice will definately be Kurzick with the armor, weapons and badass, albeit gloomy, forest. But I'd rather live in the forest by myself, visiting the Kurzicks from time to time, buying armor and supplies before going to, I dunno, the Jade Sea and visit the Luxons and their turtles.
I must have some commitment problems... I can't even be in a guild without feeling weird. That's why I don't have one.
*Crooneys: I'm not sure if that's the right word AT ALL, so correct me if I'm wrong when I say crooneys are, like, gypsies who try to steal your money while you're looking at a cheap necklace? I have the right word in Danish, but I don't know if crooney is right. Cut some slack
