I did the mission with my Monk on my first run, but my Axe Warrior is having a real hard time. I've had a few good teams but it can be hard. And GW seems to like to crash on this mission 20% of the time.

Just finished it , phew it was hard been trying it since yesterday. What a thrill ride
.
I changed my secondary profession to warrior, kept using T (primary target) button, and totally with Henchmen group only one of them died, the 2nd monk when we were tanking the "Chrysos The Magnetic" while taking out the others. Max damage axe sure played big part there.. Although we were extremely close to losing the king at one point (25% hp).

I've still not completed this mission, after umpteen attempts at it. The last attempt went okay until the Protected Cloak appeared. We all started to focus our attacks on it, forgetting about the king. I noticed a few Jade Armours running up to him, and after shouting and clicking the radar furiously, it was too late.
This mission is a close contender to Thirsty River, which took me about ten attempts before my party managed to breeze through it with immense ease.

I always get the Mursaat Monk Boss...
Rediculous mission. I hate this mission with a passion.

I have done this misison with real people, I lead them with my dom/water Me/E, maelstrom, backfire, blackout, ward vs. harm, blurred vision, empathy, ice spikes, and rez sig. We had the trapper trap the doors where the enemies were coming from, and the hydromancer and I kept the other enemies busy while our barrager, nuker, and trapper killed the ones on the other side (if enemies happened to be on both sides), we usually stayed in the middile of the keep. Our necro was amazing with his blood magic, kept us pretty fit, and our healer was menlho (sp?), but our protector also brought just enough heal to heal the king as well as make us near invincible. The monk boss was a piece of cake, I layed down a maelstrom, then the other hydromancer followed suite once mine was almost done, and I used blackot, then maelstrom, no spells came aout of that boss. Then, we retreated to the king, and everything was a peice of cake, dorian is a whimp. Seriously, if you get a group that listens, this mission becomes strangely easy.

I did tis with hench. i tried tis many times with real ppl.....but every time perfected armor came they would always attack it first.

Joseph the Jester
I've tried this mission about a dozen times. First time was with hench, made it to Mursaat Monk boss (only had Jade Bow boss once, got pwned really quickly), everything went well up until that point. I didn't think to target non-boss monsters (dunno why, just never occurred to me). After reading this thread, I think I could make the mission with a good group, just need a good group.
I'm a Me (dom)/E (fire, post-ascension).
I'll need to work out my skill bar a bit, but I'm thinking of switching to more interrupts then what I have right now (which is mostly direct damage and some Fire ele stuff). If anyone is willing to work with someone who has henched about a quarter of the missions, I'd love to learn as I love this game (just not Ettins, TK mission, and water ele imps on the way to Drok's from Beacon's Perch

Wow they nerfed this mission to hell and you guys are still having trouble? I did this with savio a 2 others and henchmen and it was easy as hell. We finished it with 0 deaths and I was talking on IM most of the time or doing homework. I remember the good ol days of it being a noob filter.
Numa Pompilius
By far the most demanding and interesting mission in the game, and my favorite mission.
Anyway, set up base by the king, and remember your priorities: protect the king, kill the minions, and kill the bosses last. If the king goes on one of his little rushes toward the enemy, you follow him. He can heal himself quite well, provided you don't let him get pummeled by a whole group while you're on the other side off the castle.
You can make this mission a bit easier by NOT lighting the beacons and if you're playing with humans you can man the catapults (while there's no fighting going on).
The perfected armor is a biyatch if you're a caster, as it's an interrupt ranger.

Perfected Armor went down really quickly with my SS necro.
I'd love to help anyone who needs assistance with this mission.
IGN Sol Vie or Champion of Althea (have R/Mo {traps}, E/Me {air or fire, N/Me {SS/battery/interrupt or anything else}, W/Mo {...WHAMMO! 'Nuff said} that can help)

This mission is great, but it requires an actual team not 8 people all doing the same mission.
goober1973
I can't recommend this guy enough. Some might think the 15k price tag is high but if you've been stuck at THK for nearly a month like I was, waiting for a group to accept a ranger (other than trapper groups), you would be willing to pay twice as much for guarenteed success.

That must have been why it was so easy, i had heard from all my guildies that it would be the hardest thing i would ever face, but beating it first time and then getting stuck 2 missions later at Abaddon's Mouth im beginning to rethink on the hardest mission in the game.

No, it was just because I was there. I have an auto-win button.

I don't know if this has already been said, and if it has, use this as a reminder.
Set up a group with 1 stance warrior 1 healer monk 1 prot monk, and whoever else you want to take (The first 3 are essential)
After you make it to the keep have the stance warrior pick up the torch and move to the large beacon near the king. Let him stand there and take all the aggro, while the two monks protect and heal him, and let everyone else kill the other monsters...........simple enough?

a few tips
1. use a communiacation programme such as: teamspeak or Ventrillo
2.plan ahead ... (just common sense really)
3. make sure you have someone at each end of the fort so then they can alarm the rest of team if they see alot of enemies ...
4.take a trapper to trap around the king when things get hot

Whats So Bad On Thunderhead. I beat It With A PUG that i was the leader of with my monk. We had 2 trap rangers i believe, 2 monks including me, i remeber 2 eles, and 2 wars. Thats all i remember. I beat it on my first try easy. We had very few deaths at the last hard part. Actually we died before that but never at defending the keep. We just trapped up the place, wars att and monks healed, and eles nuked like crazy. IMO Hells Precipe was much harder for me but i beat it with my second PUG with 8 ppl. Actually 6 because 2 lagged out. The group was a ranger(bowman), a war(sword), 3 monks(healing) including me, 2 eles(water and earth) and a battery nec who had wells and energy regens for us. Too bad one monk lagged out and i think the ranger did too right when we were at the portal wraiths. But we beat it but we died alot. Thx u Anet For Candycanes!! Rurik was killed fast. Undead Lich Took So Much Of Our Time. He kept ressing, had to kill him 3 times to win and he teleports us into LAVA!!!! Damn That Is A hard mission, Thunderhead Keep Is Nothing Compared To Hell's Precipe. Took Me 2 hours to beat with the group i described!!!

Feh, gear-tank exploit. Yeah it works (works in Elona too, have him carry a mine or a crystal), but it's cheap & cheesy. I hope ANet patches the gear-tank exploit, but considering I reported it in June I doubt they ever will.

I did this on the second attempt with all henchmen. I though maybe it was a fluke, so I ran it again. Failed on the third attempt, but succeeded again on the fourth.
First success I used all the henchmen except the archer. Second success I used all the henchmen except the elementalist.
Both times I never used a catapault once. I myself was using a Mo/E build, with melee ward being my elementalist skill. The first success I didnt really have to use my monk skills, but the second success I rezzed a couple of people.
There are only 2 difficult parts to this mission, and thats when you get the two bosses. The second boss is a bit tougher, and the boss can vary. Ive seen a perfected armor, a perfected cloak, and a Mursaat monk.
Both times I killed all the other mobs, and left the boss till last. You dont et any more mobs coming until the boss is killed.
I have a hard time understanding why people have such issues with this mission. I find the outdoor areas far more difficult. Las time I tried to get to grenth's footprint from granite citadel, my party got wiped out about 8 times by a group of about 10 monsters I couldnt split. You dont get anything like that concentration of mobs in this mission.
Anyway, like people have said, do it with henchmen. Kill mobs fast so they dont build up, and consider having Monk as your secondary if not your primary, so you can rez people. Bring along both the protector and the healer monk henchman.
Something like ward against melee, or the protection monk spell which negates attacks for your whole party, is great when you are fighting many mobs at once, and the healing is having trouble keeping up. healing seed is another good one when youre really getting hammered.
Hope this helps.

Just did this first time with my ranger in an all henchie team (apart from enchanter).
There was only one troublesome part when the first mursatt boss shows up, 2 hnchies died as i was attacking everything but the boss, once there were no more attackers for a while i turned on the boss and we wiped him out quickly.
From then on it was easy and the last boss died in seconds.
I'm glad i didn't wait for a PUG to accept me, i did think about taking my monk back there to help people out but all everyone whispering me all at once "join us please we pay 4k" annouyed me because IMO paying for monks to help with missions defeats the point of having multiclasses and i just logged out.

Mavrik - try the following team - it has worked like a charm for me each time I've tried the mission.
FOUR - count 'em FOUR warriors.
Two monks.
Two elementalists.
Have 2 warriors, one monk and one elementalist guard each gate. Do not camp the king. The warriors are the primary blocking source - make sure that they engage ANYONE that comes up to the gate. The elementalist is there to provide as much damage as possible, whether it be AoE Fire attacks or Air Spikes.
The monks are there to keep the warriors alive.
The only difficulty that you will have with this pairing is making sure no one slips by the two warriors and penetrates the middle of the keep. If each of the warriors equips sprint (or even better a crippling attack such as hamstring or axe rake), this should not occur.
That's the no-brainer version of doing the mission. There are many many more builds that are more successful than this one, but in the end this is the one that seems to have the most success with relatively ig'nant players.

i hate this mission....it really sucks and it is very hard i dont see how you do it with henchmen.....i mean they wont like heal the king so for that you have to get like a real monk and not henchy for that

What are u talking about Im a Ranger and ive done this mission 4 Times, twice with real people and Twice with Henchies. Its not that hard to do with Henchies, and my Ranger Kick Butt in the Mission.
awesome sauce
I beat this first try both times, and we used the split up your team and have 4 go on the east side and 4 go on the west technique.
Personally, i think Hell's Precipice is 10x harder than this one...

I was stuck on it for a while until I came upon an amazing pug.
We had 3 monks (1 heal 1 prot and the third one was a prot/heal hybrid, all he did was babysit the king) 2 warriors, 2 trappers and an ele that left before we reached the keep.
I find the mission always easy until you reach the keep. What we did is, I took the east side alone with a monk working cats and everyone else did the west side. When we got overcome (near the end) the monks stood in the middle and ran back and forth to heal. Eventually we ended up at the last boss and we just all ganged on him.

I finished this mission with my ranger 2 days ago. I know how it CAN but I finished it with 2 hench healers because there were no monks in the city. My party consisted of 2 rangers, healer and prot hench, 2 warriors necro and an ele. Me and the other ranger brought traps and barrage and when we got ot the keep we trapped both enctances and ALWAYS had someone on the catapults. None of us died once, easy.

Anyways, i actually stopped playing a few months ago cause i couldn't get my elementalist beyond this mission. When i came back i thought i'd give it another go after reading this thread (also read that it had been nerfed a bit). Took henchies, not the ele henchie, he breaks aggro, and it worked like a charm.
Got my ele, mesmer and monk thru that way!
So guys thanks for all the great advice.
btw also noticed that the nerf may have had something to do with the henchies, cause they were healing the king like crazy. And another thing, yes the henchies are infused, in every mission after the iron mines, some people don't believe that, but i guess they never tried :P

Activate the bonus,
return to king, stay way back (at the king's location)
Wait it out.. (The mobs will start to attack eachother (Mantles vs Mursaat))
Take out the small groups attacking you (Don't aggro them, let them attack you first)
That's how I beat it with my characters.

I don't see what is so hard with this mission. Our group had two monks, and nobody died. At the last part of the mission, camp out by the king and let the monsters come.

Lack of focus fire it what kills most groups, thats why I use henchies instead.
