It seems that it was so long ago that they deleted it... oh wait, it was? But heh, those were quite fun to mess around with. At first i was quite confused by them, but they were easy to learn.

Back then, rare armors could and quite commonly would, ID out to be minors. AND NOT ONLY that, It was a chance wether they would salvage out to be the rune.
Also Minor Major and Superior runes of the same type all looked the same, like scrolls. And UN-Ided runes all looked the same.
Even worse Celestial sigils looked sort of like vigor runes and Family sigils looked like the Celestial sigils, and it was a common scam. However Sigils were worth only 9-10k and black dyes were only 700g-1k and that was the trader's price.
The Sigil trader never supplied sigils.
And to make it even stranger, I didnt see one storm bow till after all of this.
But us geezers go even further back. Back to the Beta Weekend Events.
The party list made no sense, there actauly was a whole differnt GUI. Lions Arch was the stopping point for many, and others were rushing level 20 in the first day.
Black dyes were going for 400. You could get just about any rune for 100 gold. You could buy or sell anything. There wasnt much supply as there was demand, and because of that it wasnt hard to sell things. But also the prices were not going high because people were going to lose it all at the end of the April event anyway.
People were bragging about the 12-24 Bows they found. And being level 15 by the end ment alot to them.
NOW, YOU PEOPLE!, You, you only buy a bow if its a 15-28 Stormbow with +15% Damage while > 50% health.
Not even newbies are buying not so max bows.
It has become impossible to sell my Shadow Shield with 16 AP and 9 str Requirments, only because there are no health mods. WHAT IS THIS! WHAT HAVE WE DONE!
If I could go back to the old days, I would.
Trading was easy, farming wasnt an issue. No 105 monks, anybody could get picked for a group durring the beta weekend. And get this, if you got a W/Mo on your team, there was a good chance he wasnt going to be an idiot. And W/Mos were not automaticly expected to be stupid.
Elythor
Haha...yeah. Back in beta...W/Mo actually kick a lot of @ss in PvP. There was still the occasional air spike...but teams were a lot more balanced. Speaking of which...I didn't actually see Balthazar's stacking back in beta. I know some of the alphas and hardcore beta ppl know about it...but haven't seen it in Tombs myself. Anyone encountered that?
And no such thing as spirit spam cuz spirit sux0rs back then. (maybe bring back the -5% penalty? :P)
beta = FTW!!!

I remember The Wilds... anyone know what issue I'm referring to?
And I remember when we finally made it to Rotscale. We had the monk henchman take a pic of us beaming with pride before that tower =)
And being able ot have fun with a random PUG just before the end of a beta event... ahh now that was lovely. Such camraderie. Especially when you saw a large group of koreans lined up on the other side of the map, and everyone went, "Omg koreans! Ruuuunnn!!" I can't help but feel I'd love this game a lot more if it went back to beta

The question I would pose is did you have fun when you first started.
For me it was a lot of fun just for the fact there wasn't this 'baggage' that there is now. No one was bored unlocking skill, looking for runes. People were having fun jumping into and checking out PvP fior the first time. No one was as worried about what the lowest level they could get Droks armor.... good times.
I would guess as a new player now you are hit with this stuff from the get go...especially if you read these forums.

back in the day (betas) ... necros were the most powerful class around
back in the day the game had some means of challenge for us - skill capping took skill to do ... and god try capping a stance was next to impossible but so rewarding when I got ??? escape???? lol it still meant something cause I made an accomplishment
back in the day I was in another guild
back in the day hundred blades could be bought from Druids Overlook (I'm pretty sure it was druids)
back in the day Ventari's refuge was known as Ventari's Dell ... and still is referred to as the dell in some instances
back in the day ... we never used netspeak, leetspeak or anything like that ... we said 'hey thanks for the guild battle'
back in the day nobody really knew where fire attunement was
back in the day it was about the people having fun ... and proper use of the bug report system actually using \bug
back in the day all of the npc's looked very similar I think they had 2-4 different models
back in the day it almost felt like a mature game
EDIT *********
sorry I never thanked you for this ... another great thread friend ... thanks Xue Yi Liang I needed this ... tonight ... Friday may be enlightening on the game tonight ... I hope this thread reaches many of you out there.

Psshh, back in the day you didn't _need_ to cap skills. I still remember the first time someone found BiP in the game and the charms started spreading... It was lovely <3

Go back to Diablo 2 and you will think "man i miss the GW community".. rushed like 5 people the other day, none could even spell properly.. Eg: "U go tris wit me?".. what?
anyways my point is this game is quite immature, but when i think about it i thank Anet they made this game.. d2 community drives me nuts "tp, tp, tp, tp, tp".. that keeps me up at night, it really does

i think making a 3rd-4th char has alot to do with also seeing as most people of done this over and over before so they just want to be ran through. ya community sux. play with henchies. join a good guild and enjoy it while it last.

back then people use the tradechannel for trade
damn i miss that time even its about 4 months ago it was just allot better then it is now thats for sure

I found that when there wasn't even a trade channel it was less congested with useless trade spam. Everyone was off trying to suck in as much as the game as possible instead of copy-pasting the same thing 100 times in the same district when no ones interested.

The 'good ol' days' for you are much different than mine... Mine range from October to April 26th (the day before release). Back when the game didn't suck.

and black dyes were cheap and searing was sad. I never got to tombs in those days though, by the time I got there, air spikers were catching on...
I remember my first win in tombs though: I got my first 3 fame with my own team and I was so happy about it... since I couldnt get wins with other groups.

Omg Weezer's sixteen?!
In any case, the points are legit. The potential we got to see in the betas is still there, haunting and taunting, and not fulfilling it is a tragedy in the context of the game
Your reaction was as sad, if not more, so why not just let it go? This thread is a nice bittersweet tune, just enjoy it

But thanks for the slice of common sense.

I don't miss the "good" old days. I didn't much care for the fact that superior runes were costing well above their demand for certain classes (*cough* Mesmer *cough*) nor did I care for the whole "keep the boss a live and pray he uses his skill" method for elites. Overall, things are vastly better than they used to be.
As for the community, yes, it sucks. It happens in a popular game. But if more of us that know better tried helping the lowly newbie in Ascalon, perhaps it would make a difference. You have no idea how many people don't know about ctrl-c or hitting t, if someone has done that, afterwards.

back in the old days preps stacked and barrage was a superior skill

and I was there when you didnt have to cap skills ... read hundred blades quote ... but I had to touch up on closer good ol days for folks who are newqer and can relate ... capping was kinda rewarding to me personally.

ya i miss the first beta days of the game. too bad my comp kept crashing then and didn't get to really play alot.
i think popularity is killing this game. back in beta is was limited number of people that felt special and appreciated getting to test this wonderful game. now its masses multipling the stupidity.
the graphics are so good but i never hear one word about it. try running around in 1st person perspective for a while. brings a new level to the game. really like seeing my attacks and monsters close up. the details on monsters goes unoticed by most. the charr really look wicked and scary in first person. you don't really notice them being 10 ft tall from a birds eye.
alot of ungreatful players out there that just jump on any running train they can find to catch up to others that have been playing for months.

This thread is pretty stupid. Us new players have it easy? Its freaking 5 months old.. I've been playing for like 1-2 months and whatever. WE HAVE IT EASY? Yeah we sure do after you guys got greedy and nerfed every possible spot in Guild Wars. So all you old geezers (really, are we trying to show off or something?) have 1000K gold while all the new people have to scrounge to get a measly 1K.
This thread is a freaking joke. Sounds like a 'look at me, im 1337 leetz0r because I was around from 'teh' start. *yawns*.

I remember when you didn't have a convienient green indicator on your full screen map showing you exactly where to go on quests, and you had nothing but the green arrow on your minimap for your sense of direction.
I remember when Sigils were going for 200-300k and EVERY guild just HAD TO HAVE ONE OMGZORZ!!!!!
No, I didn't play in beta, so I'm not totally old school.

I remember when that one monk quest from yak's bend where you have to go find the guy, and have to kill the level 28 warrior boss.
SS attached
Sad thing is, when I played on my war/mo I was all ready with interuppts and everything to take him on.
Ignore the noobish talk, this was before learning of the colors.
Also I think, but not positive, that there was a necro quest where you have to kill a guy that runs away from you.
