The Dye Trader Is Cruel

825gp for Black Dye? Are they serious? I think it should be a bit cheaper than that, does anyone agree?
Everytime i go to the trader the price goes up
edit:
i just checked again and it's now 900

They work on supply and demand.

The more people that sell black dye to the merchant, the less it costs to buy from it. Common dyes like orange or purple will be cheaper cause more people have the bottles to sell.

Kill mobs, I had 3 black dye drops lastnight in 6 hours of hacking and slashing.

AND IF YOU ASK ME AGAIN THE PRICE GOES UP!!!!
That would be a cool thing to add to a merchant AI...
Black is always the most requested dye in the MMORPG's I have seen.
Near 1 platinum is a bit spendy however...

Black is so over-used. Get some creativity people

where should i fight for the best dye drops?
Deagol
I think dye drops are totally random. Maybe the best would be some low level monsters you can kill lots of with area of effect spells.
Starsky-sama
my best drop for dyes are the aloe seeds outside ascalon city pre-sear.
(ive gotten one of each normal color including silver and blk from them so far)
( total colors so far with 2 characs farming: about 22 dyes)
*not all are from aloe seeds but more than half have been from them.
825gp for Black Dye? *now. that i have to see.
1st time i checked black dye cost @ post sear, it was only 150gold. that is a huge difference...

150g for the rarest dye in the game? Give me that seller's character name, I have 1500 gold for him if I can get 10... and I'd like to see if he's interested in buying a bridge I happen to have for sale.

I've only ever gotten one Black dye since the November BWE, and I sold that after only a few seconds of advertising it, for 650.

Why would you sell dyes to the Dye Seller?! They only buy it for 2GP!!

Still, like in real life, you're better off cutting out the middleman and simply selling it directly to another player. That way they get it for cheaper and you get more money for it.

Last night it was 1200GP to purchase. Oddly, the value said 1 lol. That is why I wish they had pre-searing storage that was available in post searing. Or bigger bags.
Duality
i haven't sold any dyes to the trader myself. i figure that eventually i'll get full sets and choose what i want my char to look like once she's bigger. kizayaen thinks it's just bizarre the amount of dyes i was getting on random drops in presear.

Silver is shinier!
Sekkira
I saw it for close to 2 platinum.
Wrath of m0o
He is obviously selling it to the Merchant...not the trader....

The Dye trader has been in the habit of offering you 2 gold for black dye recently, the best money is to be made from red dyes IMO, you can often buy them for 200 or under and ive seen them go for 380 to the trader, obviously the profit margins can be larger in black dye, but its a lot rarer and people arent usually willing to part with them for less than 2500.
As for farming for dye, waste of time if your farming specifically for dyes.
I would say I spend the majority of my time on the game buying and selling dyes for small profits, I just enjoy it.

Black dye was over 3,000g to buy at the Dye Trader last time I looked. That's ridiculous, especially for something which is practically useless. Isn't there any way of getting those prices down? I don't particularly care, as if I ever wanted any I'd just wait until I found some, but I know some people like the stuff but there's no way many people can afford that kind of money.
jdwoody
I found my first black dye, I would have gladly sold it to a character, but noone would offer close to the 2.8k the dye trader offered so I ended up selling to the trader...

3,345 GP on monday night...900 is cheap.
I just checked it 1 min ago. It is 3,163. If it was 900 like you said I would've bought all I could. Never seen it that low...

I had no idea, if I had any hint, I'd have bought about six or ten of them, held them for a few months, cashed in the first sign of it going to 4.5k per black.
I can't believe how its just gone up and up and up, and silver is starting to look like it MIGHT pull that trend, but as I found five or six silver in a few hours time not long ago, maybe not. For awihle purple and red were easy grabs then silver seemed it. Funny how you seem to just hit the dyes at certain spots.

3,750 gold for black dye as of today.
Incredible, huh? A good lesson in "supply side economics", for sure . Talk about your speculative investments paying off.
Just wait till the theory of inflation comes to pass soon, where there is so much gold floating around and few gold sinks, that prices in general will become silly high.
Anywho... I can see why the price just gets higher and higher. Once you ascend and beyond, and once you get your armor and weapons to what you want... there really are no money sinks, and even twinking an alt is not very cash consuming. Once you reach fire island and the underworlds and beyond, money and drops come at an incredible rate... what else you gonna spend it on?
I think this is why the need to add in casino type games, run by NPCs and the game itself, so people can get rid of the extra cash out there.

The thing about the dye market is that players aren't setting the prices directly. With the recent sigil problem (not flaming here just using for comparison) it was player on both sides (buyers and sellers) that drove the price up to 100k per. The sigil trader wasn't doing anything but taking up space in the game.
With the dyes, the players are driving up the price of black right now because either they get used as soon as they are found or hoarded for one reason or another. This leave an extremely limited supply. I'm not sure about the dynamics of the the trader AI, but if they only have 1 black to sell, they are going to milk it like any other seller would.
I wouldn't be surpirsed though with the continuing scarcity of black, that we'll be seeing silver becoming the new black unless the devs tweak the drop rates

I think the extremely high expense for black dye is fine. Some people complain about sigil prices and I can see where they're coming from.. that's legit.
As for black dye, that's a totally "luxury" item... in the sense that it will not help you fight or play the game any differently. So it becomes sort of a status symbol If you see someone with full black armor, you KNOW they have enough money to throw around... doesn't really hurt anyone and it adds an interesting facet to the game.

yea black dye is really rare it seems... before i knew this i sold one vial to the dye trader in ascalon for about 2k... it was crazy

*thinks back to day one about 20 min after I loaded the game onto my computer when I got a black dye drop and immediately applied it to chest armor - it looked cool for about the next 5 hours until I upgraded the armor. DOH!! Guess the first time doing anything new you are bound to do something stupid.*

I have a black and silver dye with me, anybody wants to buy from me?
I have over 6K now, after the several failed tries of before ascension missions.
just ascended this morning.

I laughed when I read this. You can't even buy it (via dye trader) at the moment. The economy is going nuts (my opinion). I'm no economist so I'm not going to point fingers and put blame here and there (but I do think Mo/W tank builds should be nerfed, sorry...I didn't spend so many freakin' hours on my warrior to be outdone by a healer).
But yeah, last time I saw it (a few days ago, before I did a 2 hour FoW crafter run) it was about 18K. Then I went to Ascalon to sell some crap to the merch, and noticed there was no black dye left. I heard it went as low as 1K...but just going from 18K to *possibly 1K* to none (which would make sense if it dropped to 1K) available in about 2 hours...is crazy...
So the question is, as far as black dye...how the hell (if it's true) did it go from 18K to 1K? So quickly I might add.

black dye was selling for 1k?
you mean recently?

when i logged on in wpe, it was one of the first things i bought.
see picture:
it makes me sad that i can't even customize my characters in my favorite color. it makes no sense that an item dye would be worth more than the item itself due to a flawed game mechanic. i hope they will fix this in the future.

that the dye is so valuable makes sense though... it's very rare and in high demand
I'm sure if we thought about it we could find several examples of real life items where the upgrade component is far more expensive than the host item (witness rednecks with a 300 dollar crapmobile and a 2000 dollar stereo system)

My main character is a monk - and your statement was the compliment!
The monk vs. warrior feud continues.

GW is starting to cater less and less to us poor casual gamers.

er... might be worth remembering that replying to any posts prior to mine might be pointless since the one right above my first one is from April or May
