Weirdly, despite playing a primary mesmer myself, I find the mesmer henchman useful to bring along. Mainly because he throws out Imagined Burden on a target, and then I can rip the same target for damage with Shatter Delusions.
Dunham also casts Shatter Enchantment, which I find invaluable when outside Elona Reach, farming drakes. Mainly because that means my mesmer doesn't have to load Shatter Enchantment in his skillbar.
Splitting duties between two mesmers is just easier.

BTW: I redid the next to last mission in the game (one before Hell's Precipice) with my Mesmer + henchies for elite skills, and this time I took along the enchanter henchy. Out of curiosity, I focused on him from time to time to see what he was casting, and actually it wasn't all that bad what he was doing.

I think I said this before, but playing as a mesmer is soooo cost effective. Superior runes for a mesmer aer sooo cheap compared to everyone else. In fact they don't cost much more than minor runes.
