Unsportsmanlike conduct in Team Arena: Running Players
lyra_song
In team arena around 2:00 AM EST american servers.
My team encountered another team with a player named Natures Ne Groe. Battle started normally until both Elementalist on their team were beaten. The two remaining players then proceeded to run around the arena without fighting back. The mesmer was killed but the ranger, the player in question, Natures Ne Groe would not go down.
Apparently the player had used a running build specifically to "RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO with people" and proceeded to lead my team in a cat and mouse around the arena for 20 minutes.
the player was a R/W with skills including sprint, dryder's defense, whirling defense, troll unguent, dodge, escape.
I think this kind of conduct is unsportsmanlike and very degrading to other players. It is very upsetting to players like myself who want to battle other players in a fair and level playing field. This kind of conduct should not be tolerated. It was also most unsportmanslike for the player's own teammates because the player was not a supporting or offensive player, but rather just a running player.
I didnt leave the battle but i was disconnected, eventually leaving only our monk to deal with him/her.

First off, don't post ingame screennames without the player's permission. Edit the screennames out of the images too.
Secondly, gwg isn't really a threat.
Third, I think this has been discussed time and time again. Here was the last thread on it:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...=running+arena
Finally, it never hurts to bring a snare or something to combat running. Yes, it may be hard to coordinate a team in Arenas, especially the Randoms, but it wouldn't hurt if every player had some sort. Also, most Arenas loop around, so with a bit of teamwork you can corner someone for a moment.

That's not even as long as how much I waited. around 50 minutes The rest of us were just chasing while the ranger just kept running around for an hour. One guy went out to smoke, I went to go do homework, other two were just chatting about which beer was better.

OMG not GWguru!
Runners are annoying...little faggots~
But yeah you can corner them with a little teamwork.

your first mistake is that you assume your opponent will not run around. Expect runners and bring the means to deal with them and it's no longer a problem.
4 on 2 should win unless the 2 are amazing in pvp or lucky and/or the 4 are not equipped for many possible outcomes and counters.

I told him/her i would post them up. They said "yay"...which can be interpreted as indifference or acceptance.
Our ranger actually was doing a terrible job of pinning him/her down and my interrupt/knockdown couldnt catch up because i didnt have any running skills.

People who run in order to piss people off....
Fall into this category of FAG (not the guild)
1. runners
2. scammers
3. gold beggars
4. dumb shits
5. random leavers
I do believe the majority of people, including Anet, know about these types of people. There isnt much to be done....except cry nerf. Go, join the club, especially since dodge and storm chaser just got buffed.

And about the screennames - I don't remember if there's an actual rule about it somewhere, but it's just courteous to leave screennames of people out of it, especially in an adversarial situation like this where you know other people will flame him/her. It isn't necessary for the discussion.
kg_lildude1
just bring pin down and a longbow and youll be fine, honestly these people can be beaten easily with degen and cripples
smurfhunter
actually, theres 2 things that are really ish about this runner: he brought escape AND dodge. like hmm.... this guy was planning on running. and hes from iS.
i think hes just an asshole

I said it once and I'll say it again. They should place a time limit on random arena matches. For example if ten minutes pass, both teams die and nobody is counted as a winner.
Aracos79
With the buffs to water magic, I would think that hydromancers would make a nice choice to combat this sort of thing... at least in the random arenas.

This absolutely cracks me up...it's like the scene in Rocky when he tries to catch the chicken. I would've been dying watching this if I were on the other team, egging him on...
I guess it depends on what you consider "poor sportsmanship"...to me, it's a battle of indifference...

Theres a difference between being defensive and running away.
There is no honor in this. >.<

I try not to invest too deeply in feelings of sportsmanship or honor in online games. That's because I don't think humanity is ready to develop a system that encourages a good, clean fight between two teams of 4 random dudes on the internet.
People play Guild Wars because it's a game to have fun and otherwise squander their time on. It's pretty hard to come into it with the expectation that your opponent is doing it for "the love of the fight" or anything like that. It's just not that personal or important to most people.
(edit) :\ man I feel kinda bad trying to argue with someone with a Soi Fong avatar.

It was such a bad idea to put running skills into a PVP game like this...especially given how easy it is to build a running and snaring character. You can run forever against most team builds when you can be in running stances indefinately and planting Barbed Traps everywhere. Forget Pindown or Hamstring, with Escape you won't hit them with it or even get close with hamstring to use it. The only thing that will work are hex snares, but that excludes half the classes that dont have snaring hexes.
Aracos79
The ironic thing is that GW is trying to emulate a scenario in which there are no rules. The idea that one can "govern" warfare is absurd (yes UN I'm talking to you). You do what it takes to WIN, no matter what that might be, or how ugly it might look.
Although looking at this situation, I'm reminded of what Patton famously said, the idea of war is to make the other guy die for his country. Running around like a chicken with its head cut off doesn't accomplish that.

No matter how you look at it Anet really hasn't taken a stance on stubborn contests in 4v4 arenas aside from allowing you to map out and perhaps encouraging you not to do one trick pony builds that can't break through stances or enchantments.

Besides, the other night I was in a Team Arena match that lasted at least 15 minutes... excellent healing on both sides, excellent balance (that was an anomoly, other matches went much quicker)... it would have been a shame to have an excellent fight like that interrupted with a no winner just because.
Sanji
I can see that, however 10 Minutes was just an arbitrary number. Still, in my opinion there ought to be something simple, yet functional to discourage these epic stalemates that keep popping up.

Eventually, you'll be too pooped to run.
Sir Skullcrasher
umm.. in PvP players have the right to used different tactics.

Well try dealing with an Ranger Trap group that just trap and run and run and then trap a few more. As of latly ive encountered these groups 6 diff times they dont fight they just run and one guyw ill set up a cripple and dust trap and they continue to run. I mean its teh most pointless thing ive ever seen there not getting but what 25 faction because the opposing team quites since we dont have time to sit there and run around.

Or after a certain amount of uses of a runs kill, you're forced to do the /breath animation.

what i dont understand about this,
why not say:
(to ur team) k guys, u wanna join up back in team arenas??
I mean, why would u stay in there for 1.5 hours, if u dont like chassing some1?
U could have won like a lot of other fights in that time.
Another thing; i think running shouldnt be 'forbidden'(<--dont know how to say it in english). I mean, u guys see it as wasting another persons game, but think of it as another tactic.
I mean: I never heard some1 complain that elementalist waste the fight for others, because the fight was over in a few seconds(<<that happened to me once)
K, ofcourse running for 1.5 hours isnt fun for your opponents, but why stay haning around then?

I wonder how much arena runners charge for their services? JK...
You could make sure your team brings something like muddy terrain, slow hexes, etc.. just in case and have a couple people chase the runner into a slow trap.

You're right Medion. No one should stay in a pointless match for 1.5 hours. But the thing is, why should these conditions even exist? Doing nothing but running around is nothing but griefing. And it's not a tactic... If you're just running you're not trying to kill the other team which is the objective.
I can fully understand if you're kiting as a caster so the warrior cant hit you. I'm not begrudging that.

I dont see anything wrong with it. If you dont like it, bring something to counter it. Health degens and other skills will work well. Every build has a counter build.
Axle_Fieshe
if someone is runnin i just minimize GW and do somethin else for 10 minutes
they only continue running if someone is chasing

Running will not win you HoH matches (with one exception)
Running will not win you GvG matches
This isnt a "strategy". Like the person said himself/herself "I like f--king with people." Its not the same as being a flag runner.
If the person was fighting and ended up being alone, the natural tendency is to run. This I can understand because I play monk and running away is part of staying alive as a monk. But this person came into battle designed to run, not to use it as a keep alive tactic, but to frustrate fellow players. I consider this as derogatory as using any profane language. It's disrespectful and ruins everyone's enjoyment.
My other teammates were so frustrated that they quit playing for the night entirely. I pulled out a book and let my character chase him/her. My monk friend turned on the tv. Like i said earlier, i would have stayed if i didnt error out.
I feel justified in complaining about this kind of attitude toward other players. For some of you who see nothing wrong with this "strategy", you've obviously never PvP again a pair of W/Mo both with charge and sprint and healing skills. I do not understand how people can condone this or let alone ignore it.
I have no problem with the build. I can condone runners because after playing through the game several times, sometimes you just want to skip right to the desert and power level. I understand the reasoning behind running. But not in PvP. This I cannot accept.

Like i said it has been a common rationalization for alot of things I would call somewhat unethical gameplay as 'intended because it is allowed'. I would definately agree if there is no other reason to do this than because 'I like to mess around' is pretty lame, but it's rather par for the course.

I think ill do a runner once, too, just for fun and of course a PURE runner incl spell breaker.
and after that ill do an EMo that stands like a statue because you also lack in basic interrupts. whine more please.
why?
Because YOU still don't use conditions, instiration mesmers, blood necromancers and speed enchantments the right way.
They do more than stopping runners, bringing them is NOT to stop runners, its to attack quicker and to do damage monks can hardly heal.
And even if you do not have one of those you stil WASTE your time with the runner instead of just leaving to have fun in the game.
youre just asking for it, ill give it to you, see ya soon, catch me it you can

this has given me an idea for a hoh/gvg run... u must have a team of 8 dedicated runners with ALOT oftime on their hands, in every match they would jus run around like crazy dodging everything, and boring the other team to quit, and using this tactic to win >_>
yes...i am very stoned right now so dont ask me wat i was thinkin...
