The stupid things I've done thread
Redfang
This is a thread where you can share stupid mistakes you have made so far. Hopefully other people can learn from these mistakes.
1. I got a purple salvage drop and used a regular salvage kit on it. Crap! You need expert salavage kits for those. My one purple drop to date, down the drain.
2. I bought 2 runes of holding (500 gold each) in Yak's Bend and upgraded my two 5 slot bags to 10 slot bags. That part wasn't stupid. I then bought a third rune of holding and tried to use it on my belt pouch. Doesn't work. Then I bought another bag and tried to put it in the pouch slot so I could use the rune. Doesn't work. Lost 300 gold on that.
3. **spolier** I aggroed the entire freaking Charr army in one of the main quests.
4. I am a warrior and I vendored hundreds of pieces of wood before I learned they are an ingredient in charcoal.
5. I dyed my newbie armor, not realizing how much dye sells for on the other side.
6. I failed to stock up on belt pouches in pre-searing, nor realizing how much they resell for in post searing Ascalon.
7. It took much longer than I care to admit to realize that the space bar is the attack button.
8. That little circle around your character on the mini-map? That's your aggro radius. Who knew? But guess what? Sometimes stuff runs over and pounds you anyway, even if they are outside that circle.
9. I bought Gwen a cape for 200 gold, not realizing she would give you the tapestry if you just keep handing her flowers.
10. You can't use bleed attacks on mobs made out of rocks. Makes sense, but that was need to know info I needed to know before several missions started.

1. Not realised that space is an action button until now.
2. Not realised that the circle was my aggro radius.
3. Used normal salvage kits on a couple purples and a load of blues.
4. Used a normal salvage drop on a yellow.
5. Dyed my nublet armour silver. Twice.
6. Filled my inventory with quest items and couldn't figure out how to get rid of them.
7. Rerolled my character because I couldn't figure out how to get rid of them.
8. Ran into the same problem.

You, sir, have just made my gaming experience A LOT easier! I would've made all these mistakes, and non of these realizations - for quite some time. This really helps me out Thanks.

Hehe, I like this idea. Here's a little story about something I felt greatly intelligent about.
I was trying so desperately to walk to Piken Square, and I had a quest that somehow involved Piken Square, so I had the little green arrow on my compass pointing the way. I'd fought a ton of Charr to get there, but the last portion of the area had several groups of them in close proximity to one another. So I decided to be stealthy and try to sneak by them undetected. This succeeded at first, but towards the end, I reached a somewhat narrow bridge with a group of Charr on the other side and another one nearby where I was standing. The green arrow on my map had become the little star that tells you you're close to said location, so I thought if I ran past them I could just run into Piken Square and be done with it. I took off running, my henchmen were completely owned, I barely made it across the bridge and past the Charr to the location on my map...only to find that it wasn't Piken Square at all, but a group of NPCs that I was supposed to help out. Turns out Piken Square was on the entirely opposite side of the area. I didn't survive much after that. I was really not ready to be fighting Charr like that...I certainly learned from my mistake.

1. Convinced my friends an all monk team would be awesome in PvP
2. Frogot to mention we shouldnt ALL be healing Monks
3. Rushed the enemy with no attacks other than our wands
PvE Side
4. Tried to Solo missions after LA with my Ele/Mes
5. (ill never learn about this one) I Dye EVERY armor upgrade to my liking, ascalon, yaks bend, LA, everyone i spent a ton of cash on Dye's and ill still do it again once i get new armor.
6. Completed the actual missions while my friends skipped them all till level 16 only to rush through the easy 2k exp reward missions for a quick fix to 20
7. Wrote this thread... oh wait i think this might have been the one smart thing ive done so far, learn from my mistakes!

First day playing the game, in pre-searing ascalon, got a black dye drop. Promptly applied it to my crappy sword. Sold the sword to a merchant.

^ nice story lol
and thanks for sharing your mistakes, I've already made a few of those myself (didn't realize they were "mistakes" until you just pointed them out) and hopefully I can recover before making it to Yak's Bend (*tries to cover up full set of orange dyed armor so nobody can see*)

hehe yeah I also just found out about that whole space bar attack button. And yes I use a regular salvage kit on my first yellow item ( son of a ...) . I'm slowly exploring post seared acarcon without making any more stupid mistakes. Now I just hoard all materials I find incase I need them for a part of something else.
Sir_Sid
The only stupid thing I have done is wasted every single one of my dyes. :P
haran
hehe, technical term for the space bar is the "do it" key. No kidding, check your bindings.

1.) Ordered Guild Wars on a Friday without realising that the company I ordered from do not deliver on weekends or bank holidays, forcing me to wait four days. *Twitch.* If I'd ordered one day earlier I wouldn't be in this mess.
That's it for now, this post will be edited updated with dumb in-game things... If it ever arrives. =(

1. Buying my first expert salvaging kit and then immediately and accidentally selling it right back to outfitter/merchant for half the cost!
2. Unlocked a Minor Rune of Vigor (thankfully I still have it for PvP) and began salvaging normal *clutter* only to realize at the end that my purple item (wanted to get rune to add to armor) was missing! Realized I was in such a hurry that I salvaged that and got crap for it! *still slapping myself for stupid mistake*
Those are my two big issues and I hope that I can mention more as I run across them. So far I've been really good about keeping myself in check and making sure I do things right from here on out.

i accidentally dyed my backpack when i was searching for something to apply my first dye to
cwebb004
I had gotten a purple dye drop but managed to trade it for a red one. Well, I happened to be using an Elementalist whos newbie armor is black and red. When I dyed the armor...IT CAME OUT LOOKING THE SAME! ugh! Lesson learned.
catharsis
Woah, woah.. hold up... there's a secondary market for belt pouches?
Hm...
How much do they tend to go for?
----
My own mistakes:
Like seemingly EVERYBODY else, I started applying dyes to my newbie armors before I had any idea whatsoever of what they were worth.... Then I decided the new colours looked goofy and paid cash for a dye remover to get rid of them
I used to keep selling my unnecessary crafting materials to merchants before I realized you can get way more cash from materials traders or other players. Oh, and people who buy wood are silly. EVERY bloody thing you find salvages into wood.
I bought a barbed rinblade of charrslaying for 125g.
I crafted my own steel ingot instead of just buying one. That's 10 planks of wood + 200g for charcoal, then charcoal + 10 iron ingots + 200g. 400g plus materials costs for one lousy steel ingot. It turned into a good helmet, mind you.. but still.

I ran headfirst into a bunch of charr (near althea's ashes) when I clicked on the ground instead of whatever I was supposed to be doing.
I also replaced my elementalist robes from the "good" merchant in Ascalon city (150g/ item 30armor) with the pyromancer one from the "bad merchant' (50g/item 15 armor) not paying attention and thinking "wow the prices go down as you level up" Then I proceeded to sell the elementalist robes for 9g
I still have problems doing that ctrl + click on your exp bar thing to announce how close to level you are. Sometimes it works, most times it doesnt.

oh my goodness.. thanks for that, I never knew.

When I first got the game I got my level 1 Warrior, went outside and down to that small river, and started fighting the creatures there... about 3 attacked me at once (those things get crazy!) and before long I was dead.
Apparently the entire time I had been looking up there at the top of the screen at THEIR health instead of MY health over to the right.
I tried to flee but they caught up to me and killed me before I could make it anywhere. I guess it helps to have a look around before entering the frey...

ok, before I make the same mistake, what's a purple salvage drop? and what am I SUPPOSED to do with it instead of using a salvage kit on it?
butcherboy
1) Killed the bull in pre-searing with my newb ranger. I should wait and charm it.
2) Repeated a quest twice and realized it might actually be a *joke* quest.
3) Tried to rush the Large Aloe Seeds in Wizard's Folley with my M/R.
4) Didn't save my rune hammers because I needed the space (do they really contain runes?).
5) Sold my best weapon simply because it wasn't equiped.
6) Hoard "collectables" instead of salvaging them esp once I have everything I need from the collectors.
7) Walk into a corner with allies/Gwen following me.
8) Tried to take just one more group of monsters before resting XX.
9) Died my starter stuff green.
10) Despite having a better hammer I went questing with all my buffs in axes since my axe was just that cool.
I think the cape for Gwen does something (gives her more powers?).

the item name is colored in purple instead of blue like the normal unidentified. I too used a regular salvage kit on my one drop, because I thought it wouldn't work on the purple item and hadn't gotten to yak's bend yet.
DigitalX
only thing i've done is wasted a few dyes on my current armor :P dyed it like 4 times ... lol ^_^ purple, red, green, orange, yellow, and right now the gloves and tunic are black, and the leggings and boots are silver :P
mnemosyne
Oh, I've done #7 or walking up on a hill with Gwen and my trial ranger cat and not being able to move until they skip away.
Grimdar
I accidentally sold my identification kit once, and another I accidentally bought two salvage kits. Hurt the wallet, real bad
DigitalX
oh yah... i wasted 200 gold on a cape for gwen, and she didnt even take it... lol :P

I've bought the two salvage kits. I ended up using them though. Good on long runs.

is there any other distiction between purple and blue items?
Warr
hmm....this ones easy.
1.IN pre-searing, fought the charr north of the great wall, deathh sooo many times, while thinking there had to be a strategic way to kill them.... If you've done it, you know they PWNURSTUPIDAZZ
2. Did not know as a warrior once your on a target youll follow them forever...I first played a pvp char, and everytime they moved I tried to follow them using WASD ... and always thought.....how come all these other warriors are liking homing missiles!?!?!
3. Tried to kill the rogue bull as a Ele, with only a starter wand, with no mesmer skills.
4. Bought more than one cape for Gwen...cause I though maybe she wanted 2?
5. Didn't realize that the green water was killing me in the catacombs....
6. In PVP I kept pressing T, cause I didn't know you use CTRL+Space (do it) to call a target...wondering why it never called anything.
7. Pre-ordering from Fry's Electronics...worst item ever...(censor's icon) my wife has a war pick
