I think Warrior beats it out in terms of originality. Oh, and Ranger. And Monk. Those haven't been around since the beginning of time. Nope.

Just because it's called an assassin class doesn't mean it's the Diablo assassin, or any other generic assassin/ninja thingie. Let's see what it actually is before we criticise it for being what it is without knowing what it is.

Damn, that cost me a few brain cells.

Consider rangers... in my limited gaming experience, the whole "traps" thing is new for a ranger/archer type of character. Sure, rangers abound in many games, but how many trapper builds? Or interrupters, for that matter?

Keep your pantyhose on until it's actually time to poop.

That is more like a new attribute line for a warrior, opposed to a new profession.

Rangers in mmo settings, its fairly new, but the playstyle or class with traps is not new across all game settings. It is more rouge-ish in nature, but that doesn't really matter. Interuption of spell activities isnt new, but it also wasn't associated with one particular skill over another. Interuption of any activity is somewhat new, but could be found in different formats in other professions in different games.

Bottom line is that there's really nothing new in a fantasy sword and sorcery type setting... You pretty much have to stick to a particular formula otherwise it's just not a traditional "D&D" type game. If you want originality, stick to some different type of genres.

I just find it silly that people are getting mad at how assassins arent original in a traditional fantasy game setting...that's like complaining how there's no new music when you're listening to an oldies station.

I imagine:

Fast-ish attacks
Some kind of "dodge"
Sneaking skills
Ability to do lots of criticals
Dual weilding
Less armour/no shields
Less damage-dealing per hit normally

Anything else? Sorry if I've copied anything given that I've dropped in on this discussion so late.

If it just hits things it's a copy of a warrior.

IF it jsut throws things it's acopy of a ranger.

IT has to be original.
Stealth is stupid.

It should be like the mesmer/encro mix of melee.. Fast attacking, evasion, teleporting.

Hopefully they give it a tree of dart attacks and one of melee. I think we all expect claws and dual weilding so I don't see how they can not have htem..
Looking at the pictures maybe your armor will improve ranged rdamge and if you want to melee you can use a different sort of armor.

You all have to keep in mind if it attacks fast and does high damge then stuff like conjure, strengh of honor, etc could highly overpower it. It needs to have low daamge at the start if it attacks faster.

I really hope they aren't gonna go with an assassin, I was bored beyond belief with Diablo's version and I can't think why this would be any different. I would like to see another physical type class though, theres already 4 types of caster in GW

Hehe. Diablo's Assassin was heavenly (favorite class, by far). If GW's version will be something like that (+attack speed Enchantment, +run speed Enchantment, quick movement/attacking, daggers, zapping) I'm definitly going to play this like a mad man!

Though, I want to know the other classes (if there are any..) too, maybe one of those is even better (probably not though).

I CAN'T WAIT!

Besides other classes I would like some other races like GNOMES!! Dang it. There is nothing funnier to watch that a GNOME WARRIOR haha EQ had the best I think. Well until they screwed up the graphics of them. The old style gnome was the best looking ones, the updated graphic ones looked like crap.

Also I should be playing a lvl 20 assassin 2ndary the very first day. The place in the desert lets you change professions, so, they are going to have to add assassins there as well.

I hate to naysay but i reckon there gonna noob up gw if they make the assasin too good - which they probably will...
the likely hood is that its gonna have some stupid moves like one hit kill or invisibilty... damnit.

on second thought arenanet have been pretty good in balancing out the profesions (exept noob faced warrior monks and stupidly frail elementalists)
I think (because i am more important that you all (of course)) is that they should create a whole new GAME where you are the charr, and then you could fight the people on guild wars!!!!

.....well i'd buy it

it would be AWESOME, exept thed have to tart up charr graphics and somehow make a sexy female charr option for more appeal :s

( that is a sexo-bestiality confused emoticon, shocking that noone has created one however )

Not necessarily... there will probably be another place in Cantha for that.

I can't see them adding a NPC to the Desert, they'll have a whole new area for that.

That would be akin to giving out the expansion content for free. Its going to be in an area within the expansion without a doubt. I wouldnt be surprised if you had to unlock the profession before you could use it either.

AHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm sick of assasins! They are EVERYWHERE! Why doesn't arena net make up a class? I think that a Summoner class would be nice, even though that has been somewhat done before.
I think it would be pretty funny if the new class was nothing like an assasin. Then Anet could finally say, 'Gotcha Noobs!'

Hmm lets see, you can play a necromancer now, which summons undead. How would that be different from what exists already? Oh yeah thats right, it would go the cliche' final fantasy route and step on the already sore toes of the elementalist class. Wait, what is that you say, make them a support role only? Hmm lemme think about this, you know rangers summon these things called spirits, that augment everything within range. Well, what else is there to summon, semi-permenant equipment? What is the point when everything is standardized for pvp anyway? I know, have it be something better, but without a counter. Er wait, thats why hundred blades was turned eliete because it was easy to abuse with illusionary weapon. In a sense we have had summoned weapons all along.

The idea is to create something that would function differently than what exists already. There is not much point in re-creating something that already exists within the game already. There is a melee character, there is a wilderness/archer character, there is a "magician", there is a manipulator (mesmer), there is a necromancer, there is a healer (monk). The only thing that is missing is something that mimics enemies (shape shifter), and a character designed around stealth and finesse (assasin). They could have just as easily called it a thief or a rouge instead of an assasin. In the end does it really matter?

Speculations, speculations...

what the heck..I'll do it too

Dual wield is a must!
Armor must be feeble....
Stances, is a must, better than ranger, better than warrior...
Conditions...will probably be the same as any other , but they will add one that is more gravely...heheh

Another class they will implemement ??

They will for sure copy WOW. Why ? Now thats success. If u cant do as well as your competitor copy him and do well.

There will be a dwarf / Char class for sure. The renegade Char champion....oh what a story line....IT WILL HAPPEN!

Just wait and see...

or Jeff Strain is no friend of mine...

I'd be an assassin (and hence *must* be a ninja) with a .303 rifle from a rooftop...

An assassin by definitionis someone who kills people for money.
But the name generally gives illusions of more 'class' and 'finess' that a hitman

assassin from the word hashish. hassassin's were the secret islamic order that smoked dope as a reward for killing and risking their lives.

D2 added assassins with dual claws in their 1st and only expansion. maybe gw will also throw in barbarians with lances and whirlwind moves.

OT but yes I read the Dan Brown book 'Angels and Deamons'... very good book (reading 'Deception Point' now). I noted Dan Brown never mentioned the Hassasin's idioligy, and never used the term 'Muslim' to describe the character.

And the Hassasin's were Middle Eastern... but saying they were an "Islamic Order" is untrue... (factoid: The largets Muslim community is NOT arab; majority of Muslims world wide do NOT speak Arabic)

Anwyays, just doin my bit to keep the record straight. It's bad enough people think we are all terrorists out to kill ppl; last thing we need is for gamers to think we are all highly trained assassins to

Anyways its an interesting lil teaser... can't wait to try it out. I just hope there is a tie in with the current game so that it melds together some how; cuz I dont see myself finishing this one in time lol

"Finishing" i.e. ascending all 4 characters, and pimpin' em out with fissure armor lol

hm... maybe the unknown's some sort of Summoner...

Summon Charr Warlock
Enchantment Spell
25e, 5s casting time, 60s recharge time
Summon a level 1-15 Charr Warlock with 100-300HP. Charr Warlock randomly casts: Heal Area, Fire Storm, Phoenix, and Lava Font. This summon is dissolved after 10-60s.

Summon Black Wraith
Elite Enchantment Spell
25e, 5s casting time, 60s recharge time
Summon a level 1-24 Black Wraith with 50-240HP. Charr Warlock randomly uses: Bestial Pounce, Scavenger's Strike, Feral Strike, Brutal Strike, Call of Haste, and Maiming Blow. This summon is dissolved after 10-60s.

Read Digital Fortress and you'll be able to solve a puzzle that his IQ 300 brown haired women can't.
lol

If duel wielding was a unique attribute... 0-6 reduces your penalties, 7-8 is normal and form 9+ you get a bonus to defence or attack
Simply because if your ambidextrious its not as big a deal. However since most of us arent TRAINING comes into it. And a warrior who is used to fighting 1 weapon encounters probels with a duel weilding foe...

Duel Weilding
Finess (adds to accuracy of thrown weapons)
Shadow Magic Techniques (like dodge or teleport to living enemy)
Assassin Equipment (smoke bombs. poison darts etc)

assassin sohul have lo armour MAX of 60

I like this idea Reminds me of this expansion for Quake, where u could use this horn to summon a random creature to follow you around like a pet and attack.

It could be interesting. I think they need to redevelop the pet system first tho, before they add any other types of "pets"

For example, how is it that I can command henchies to attack, without myself attacking: "shift+ctrl+space" to target, henchies attack ur target.... But this doesn't work on my pet? The pet will only attack when u actually attack, and is usually slow in responding.

The devs could tighten this behavour up a bit more...

Y'know I never played any other MMO before GW; have they done this class before:

A Druid: A character that uses his natural surroundings to his advantage.

This character's skillset is strongly tied to his environment; he cannot use winter skills in the Desert, for example. Or use Jungle skills in Shiverpeaks.

His skills mostly consist of Nature Rituals, Spirits. Causing conditions that can bring an advantage to his teammates, and disadvantage to the opposing team. Mostly a supporting character; not meant for solo farming.

The Druid can also shapeshift for a short period; in this form he cannot cast any spells... but it's the only form where he can deal direct damage. The form he takes is also environmentally dictated...

i got to page 2 before i stopped reading, so some of these ideas may already be in there...
there's easy fixes to most of the problems you guys have w/ the class:

Stealth mode - stance - smaller aggro bubble and disappear from non-ally radar

that would make it effective in pvp and pve

duel weilding... an assassin needs to have this, that's just a duh thing to me, but i'm a d2 lod vet, so... a lot of the ideas i'll have will be spinoffs of that (and the creators of AN were guys that worked on the diablo titles, so they've prolly played a lot of d2 as well)

overall it will be a mix between warrior and ranger i'd think, not as good at tanking as warrior, but better than ranger, uses melee most of the time but with several specialized skills for distance

some thoughts on distance skills that would work well:

knife throw, low dmg, causes bleeding
or knife throw, causes crippling

ya know, crap like that

maybe throw a few traps in there, nothing like the lightning traps in d2, but something that wouldn't be used by a ranger, using chemicals or something

stances that work with duel weilding, like for 10 seconds you have 75% chance to block, and of those blocked 50% chance to cause bleeding or crippling or something

i'd think the class specific attribute would be stealth, that way if you want to be able to have powerful stealth skills you've gotta have assassin as primary

make cross class skills so that if you have ranger as secondary you can have new bow skills

there's just a ton of stuff that they could do to make this a kickass class that doesn't make anything redundant

Jaster has it spot on for the new class imho but we will have to wait until the weekend to see.

As for copying WoW? I would sooner it copied Never Winter Nights
