I would like to add to this thread. In fact, I signed up for this forum because I was thinking about pets a lot and I wanted to start a suggestion thread. I read the rules, did a search, and I found this thread.....so here goes.
Pets are a great idea, but the skill costs make them VERY expensive. To make pets worthwhile, the creators of GuildWars could create a stable in different cities. You unlock your account stable much like you unlock your bank.
The role of the tamer is the same...they take your pet so you can train a new one in a mission, BUT they take it back to your stable if you paid to open it. Your stable can only have one pet of each type—in fact, pets could be "unlocked" much like skills. As you get more pets unlocked, you get more titles--just like being a gladiator, or earning wisdom, explorer, et cetera titles.
When you start a quest, you equip charm animal and go to your stable to choose your pet. If you don't go to the stable, you just use your last pet. At the stable, you can check your pets attack type, damage, ac, hit points, et cetera.
If you create a new character you can still access your stable (once you pay the 50G), however, any pet you choose either starts off at your level (or your level +1 until you get to level 5)--then it stays at your level and does NOT get XP until it gets to the pet’s Master Level.
A level 15 pet would be at level 6 with a level 6 character. When the character gets to 7, the pet would advance with him--not because of XP, but because it matches it's Master’s level. When the character gets to 15, the pet starts to get XP. Simple. It would work very much the same way henchies change level depending on what town you teleport to.
Collecting pets can be very rewarding. It would not upset the balance. It would give one more level of diversity to the game while using the same engine the game currently uses.
I want to petition for stables in guild wars. Please...someone at ArenaNet hear me. The potential satisfaction from pets is not being fully utilized. This does not seem like it would be difficult to do and I think it keeps in line with ArenaNet's objectives.
I love this game.
EDIT: A stable would be one more thing you can purchase for your Guild Hall.
