Namechanging: A name is an identity. As mentioned before, this would benifit scammers....

. . And your right, I do not want to start a new character (lose time, or energy), just for vanity sake.

I posted a topic about this :P unfortunately, it was before I saw this one.
I think it should happen. Certain aspects of your character can currently be changed, such as classes, yet your characters name cannot.
Maybe there should be a 'name changer' at the Great Temple of Balthazar, and he could charge a small fee or something and permenantly change your name
Perhaps a little window would appear like in character creation.
As for confusion with friends and guild, on the friends list it could be:
*original name* (*changed name*)
like when that friend is on another character.
And on guild list, it could say *Formerly known as ______* compared to the current *Also known as ______* when using another character.
And to conclude....
ITS A GREEEEEAT IDEA DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!

A year ago I created a character. I have since deleted that character. I still appear on other peoples friends list as that character, new name behind it while online. Scammers can't hide behind a new name if this is true across the board.
A one time name change should be ok. That person who started with a 'silly' name and has 'matured' thru the game, should be allowed 1 change.
edit: added - Perhaps the name change should be doable after an event like "Ascension".

Remember, if you like your character's nickname it doesn't mean that you'll like it forever. Keep it in mind when you are going to buy FoW armor for this character.
We need a limitation of nickname changing like "1 time/year", but not like "1-2 times for character and no name-changes in future" because of argument I've wrote above.
I've signed above.
P.S. Sorry for my English.

I wouldn't want everyone to be able to change character appearance completely, because then no one has an actual char anymore. Being able to add a beard to your warrior would be great, but since it's part of the facial model in GW, it'll never happen.
So, in summary, /signed.
I think you should be able to change your character name at least once, much for the reasons in the post and quote above.
I created a character as a mule, then eventually started playing him, but he is stuck with the mule name
/signed for the one allowed name change per character (but as a suggestion, if a character changes their name, their old name should still be linked (just as if the player was playing another character, this may help stop the scammer issue with name changing).

Definitely /NOT signed.
A character's name is how he can be identified apart from all the others of his kind. Change the name and all connection to who that character was (and possibly even the player) can be lost. Attempts to contact people not on the friends list already becomes hell. Furthermore, attempts to identify people already on the friends list when they've changed their character name would be a futile endeavour.
Besides... it could lead to retarded things like characters changing their names to insult other participants... weird trickery and communication via name-change. There would be no thought put into names at all any more because they could just be changed on a whim. Price wouldn't matter even as there are plenty of people out there with the cash to find any whimsical endeavour.
No.
I'd vote for almost anything else to be mutable.... but not name nor primary class.

To prevent abuse, the feature should involve a monetary cost.
That being said, you should be able to change all other aspects of your char, such as hair, face, skin, and height. These things are purely cosmetic afterall, and I for one would enjoy the game more if I could vary the look of my char from time to time.
That, and I made my first char way too short, I can't see the armor details well on her.

I am totally for this since currently I want to delete my first character ever because I don't like his hair and his name.. I worked really hard on him and I want to buy 15k kurzick armor for him (alot for me) but I don't like the name or the way he looks so I am defiantly for this one!!! Anet pull through for us on this one..../Signed

@ those that think friends will go away. When a buddy on your friends list logs onto another character on their acct, he/she still shows up, right? So what does this tell you? The identification as a friend can/is tagged to the account, not just the name of the character you add. A new name could still show up in your friends list, just like a different character on his/her account would. Same deal for ignore list.
as far as scammers go... Someone please give me a viable example of how a scammer would take advantage of this?? As well, you can only change your home turf 5 or 6 times? Just make it the same for name changes.
I don't see any flaws, and think people should leave it to the devs to decide if it can be coded or not.
Identity? This isn't real-life. Its a video game.
/signed, only with a tight cap on number of changes allowed.
