Official GW Scams Thread (no posting names)
Lady Meriam
This morning I got my noob character scammed. I admit I am learning this game and very vulnerable to scams. I am posting this to alert people.
************ (his name) shouted out "Red Dye--100 gold" and wanting this color I bought from him. He placed a Red Dye in window and I happily paid him 100 gold. Two more red dyes, and I have my outfit I thought. Well upon closer inspection, I found I had bought dye remover (looks exactly like red dye) and I was victim to my first scam. (reminds me of the AC1 black robe scam--the white one which was common looked exactly like the black one in trade window, and they were not labeled).
Anyway, I guess us new players need to be VERY aware of people ripping us off. If you know of any other things that people do, please post so we can be aware of crooks and swindles.

Yes, always check everything before you click that Accept button. It cracks me up when someone will agree to buy something for a certain amount and then try to shortchange you when it comes time to pay up. Once I just sat there waiting and watching as this guy put in 3 different gold amounts, the final one being the price we agreed upon. Now when fools try to pull this on me, I just cancel the transaction and tell them since they want to act like that, the price just doubled. Funny thing is, half the time they still buy whatever it is LOL.
Master Elyas
yea... i heard of someone switching in a dye remover for a red dye... i just told the guy that he should of made sure that it was red dye by checking the color, and hes like "Well, I dont usually do that..."
i have never been scammed or scammed anyone, but im sure it really sucks to have it done on ya.... :P

Possible Scam?? When you finish ashes quest you get the ashes and keep them even after talking to duke.
Someone tried to sell me those ashes before for like 2p. I didn't do it, but I saved the ashes from the quest to see if I could give it to a guildie and he could just hand duke the ashes and get 2k exp. It didn't work, so was thinking people are trying to sell the ashes as a scam?
Just need this confirmed...

that person probably forgot what the ashes was for, and had no idea what to do with it... so, what would you do? i would do exactly what he did, and try to sell them for at least a little cash... 5 gold would do...

Technically, this is not a scam, and in fact, shows my stupid gene has mutated and left the mother organism..
Last night, Lasher Dragon up there, a few posts above me, well, he helped me out legit. I bought a bow from him that kicked ass. Well, I went on a Charr hunting orgy. I had nearly 100 charr carvings and TONS of hides, gear, and i got 14 purple drops and one yellow.
Then, my dumbass thought "oooh, all I need to do is buy some scales, and I can can get soem scale armor crafted, since I have the leather!" So, I go to Yak bend, visit the armorer, and discover im short 50 gold for the complete set of armor. Then, my dumbass decides to go to the merchant. Ya know, to sell off my crapware stuff so that I may afford the armor I want.
This is where people need to pay attention:
ALWAYS KEEP YOUR WEAPON EQUIPPED WHEN SHOPPING.
I clicked sell on my shiny new bow.
I scammed myself with itchy mouse trigger finger...
I am a complete dumbass

A positive side is, one of my drops nearly matches the old bow attribute for attribute, so my loss was mostly in pride, thank the winds.
I think my post made little sense regarding thread relevance, so let me explain better:
When trading with another player, watch wtf you are dragging to trade. Same goes for merchants. Before you know it, your dragon sword goes back into the matrix...

"I really, really hate that man."
Glad to hear it Lasher Dragon!
I am working on acquiring expert salvage kits now, since I seem to have over 20 upgrade items, all purple. Sheesh. Bad luck by self-destructive behavior witha merchant becomes a boon to the next big thing. I shall own more charr in due course
Master Elyas
heeeeeyyy... got any good sword upgrades? lol... i have a hilt upgrade, but for some reason, i cant use it on my Fiery Dragon Sword of Deathbane...

And he pmed me after I was looking for a monk for the ashes quest, and I quote, "I'll sell you the ashes you need for 2k and you won't have to do the mission"
So I'm just posting it to make sure people don't fall for it. Thought this was for scams and wanted to make sure this was.

Another scam I have been noticing, even ON HERE, is people claiming abuse/loss of stuff, and attempting to social engineer a free ride in the form of services, replacement of goods, etc.
If someone tells you in-game about a loss, and asks for means to recoup it, unless its someone in your guild and you trust them, assume it's China at work again

The "scam" I fell for until last night was selling anything that looked powerful to the merchant before identifying it. He may offer up 2gp, but after an ID it is usually worth 4-20gp (pre-sear stuff). So ID before selling and you should come out ahead. ID means you also get a price for the item in gp.
Master Elyas
dear god... i cant even remember when the last time i made a noobish mistake... roflmao

i am not saying its a good thing....BUT...doesnt it make it a little more life emmersive if theres scam artists, thieves and vagabonds in the guild world ?
i read this and felt sorry for the robbed, but i had a slight admiration for the robber for even being in the game.
for without them,it would be a mary poppins world
also nice to be warned too, thanks.

Another Dye based scam I've seen is "Gold Dye".
A player was offering Gold Dye in the trade channel.
When I questioned him about it and informed him that there was no such thing he said someone else had sold it to him, claiming it was rarer than black.
After further questioning I managed to ascertain that the Colour listed for this dye was Mix, and thus it was just a mix of yellow and orange or something like that, so that in the bottle it looks gold.
This demonstrates once again the importance of looking at the stats of an item before you buy it.
It's not gold dye unless it says Color: Gold.

Noahoneill
the guy who scammed you made a 50g profit.. what an idiot.
Lews
In pre-sear, everyone tried to scam you for dye. For the heck of it, I just shouted 'Black dye, um, whats a good amonunt? 50 gold!' And around 500 people whispered me.
Ofcourse I've also bought black and silver gold for under 200 gold there, but thats just welcoming players to Guild Wars!

The first dye I found in presearing was silver and I decided to sell it for 10g since I could only get 1g for it from the marchant. The person who bought it from me gave me 20g.

i got scammed like this today
i posted screenshots proving the whole scam to the devs. here is the response i got from a GM:
Quote:
Hello, Thanks for getting in touch with the Guild Wars Support Team in regards to this issue. We will use the information you have provided to investigate whether a violation of the rules has occurred. All information related to the discovery and disciplining of an account will only be discussed between the violator and customer support. If we do find that a rule or rules were broken, you will not hear of any rulings related to the incident and the account(s) involved. However, when a trade between players leaves one of them feeling he or she was scammed is often an issue of trust rather than a violation of our rules or use of a bug/exploit. We can certainly sympathize with you that this must be a very frustrating situation, but we consider such non-violation scams to be a player-matter to be resolved in-game. We are unable to return any of the items lost to you. Please understand that once you give out, loan or otherwise release control of an item to a person, you are in effect giving it to that person of your own free will. We can only ask that you be more cautious in the future when exchanging items with other players. Please contact us again if you need further assistance, - The Guild Wars support team |
perhaps scamming should be promoted on the GW boards as a way to make gold, since NCSoft is fine with it and it's totally legal according to them
Omega_2005
well...at least NCSoft will check this forum now and again and make sure future builds will EXCLUDE scammers, via e-mail, and via posting on Official Forums.

Haha, you make me laugh, NCSoft is pro scams hahaha.
Dont try and blame your mistake on someone else, you screwed up not NCSoft. They do this beacuse if they "gave" you back iteams or gold, it would be easy to scam them.
You and a friend set it up so it looks like you got scamed, they give you "back" your "lost" item. You now have two of the same item and you did nothing to get it.
That is why they arent going to give back your gold/items. Blame no one but you, it was your folly no one else's.
lornranger
I sold a black dye for 1100gp in post searing Ascalon yesterday.

ok. i see your point
but i have a counterpoint
in the end, i did not really take a "loss".
because after i got the response from the GM that they are not going to help me, and that scamming is "technically legal"...i chose to solve my problem rather than lose the 200 gold that i was scammed for.
i marked up the price to 500, and scammed another guy out of that by selling the ashes to him.
now his only way to break even is to scam yet another person for at least 500 gold. and so the scamming chain must continue on and on, since it's the only remedy for being scammed.
plus, once it catches on how all this scamming is legal, tons of people are going to be doing it.
so either way... scammers win, honest players lose.
Metalstar
Easy way of stopping scamming.
Be more careful! Its only like in real life, dont go giving your money away without thinking "is it worth it" beforehand.
Seems simple to me

ArenaNet obviously want to keep their policing at a minimum. There is no monthly fee, so there isn't a lot of money to keep a policeforce.
As long as people do their spamming and scamming by in-world means, I doubt they will show a big interest. In-world spamming and scamming is, as someone said, quite an rp element. People shouting praise for their warez at a market square is quite medieval, so are con artists.
