The Bear is the only one with a serious disadvantage. I go for Dire because I like the additional damage and it's fun to make it a dire pet...
Good: Skill Quests and the nice leveling process. Bad: Post-Searing and the Shiverpeaks are ugly imho.
I don't like these builds, if you use R/E like an earth ele you could also go for R/Mo and do full heal ._.

Bought one with the same stats but Furious instead of Sundering for 25k. Don't know if the price is representable.
They do drop with max damage. I have seen maxed ones all over Maguuma and had one drop in Fahranur in Elona.
