They probably have pbaoe or touch spells like starburst,etc... and water staves produce cold damage and it's probably cold damage since...

Um maybe he spawns after you killed all the plants in the area like the imp boss in norn area?

Hehe maybe add Dragon Raiders as a playable race to defeat the Ancient Dragons
