Yes it will stay with the side you picked. I've done this a couple times for freinds who start guilds that aren't that far into factions.
shadow form is faster to learn if your just starting to farm. Geomancer though is more versatile.
mini norn that changes as you start fighting would be nice.

I don't see much of a use for Slippery Ground. Might just be me though.
Personally i like my 55 just because hes not a charecter I normally use so its somewhat fun when i get bored.
