I ran something similar, except I brought the really good paragon rez sig, and always brought an IAS.
It does seem very strange that up until vabbi, no problems, once you get there, you're done.
Actually, I did it on a paragon and I was fine on that mission to go the mainland at level 16, just try upgrade your armor with collector stuff...
