Why don't you PvP?
Crimson Ashwood
I'm like many other people, I just do the PvE thing, run around, kill stuff, do missions, complete the game again for the sake of it... do a few chest runs here and there, perhaps some two man SS/SV - 55 love.
I've tried PvP before, it's not that I don't like it, it's rather than the learning curve is rather steep for it (I feel). Maybe I'm just a raving noobulator with a worthless set of PvE characters, or maybe I hate losing because I'm childish... but, it's quite a knock to somebodies confidence when you rock in to PvP with your fully worked on PvE character (not having read a forum or a wiki) to get destroyed and pounded by Mr. clever build and his tactics.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, good on them I say... PvP people usually put a lot of effort into what they do. So I'm certainly not trying to take anything away from them or complaining about PvP at all.
The only PvP I can handle, is the Ascalon 1 - 10 arena... entering there out of presearing I was confronted by Mr. Drok's armor McPoison arrow, and your mate Mr. Life Transfer Necro, and everyones favorite tweaked and pimped out max wielding Warior Monk.
I can handle this, because after being power slapped to the ground there many times enetering in my new Ascalon armor I decided to seek vengence against those people. So a purpose built iW mesmer was born, who's quite effective at taking down those who took me down. I still feel like a dog there though... elite skills, 15k armor and max weapons surely weren't intended to be there... so with every strike of iW, it's vengenace for for those who entered there after pre-searing to be met with a world of max item and elite pain.
Anyways, wrap it up b, I'm just asking what deters you from entering the world of GW PvP? Is it the players? The difficulty of the build? The sense of weakness you feel? ...

The grind of fame and rank. PVP is fun with people you know on TS or Vent and have played with each other before.

But to further explain, its due to the lack of originality. I know, I know, people stick to what works, but I wish more people tried things outside the box. GvG has never been as bad though.

I don't PVP for many of the OP's stated reasons. Steep learning curve, no one to teach me what's what, and the fact that I enjoy PVE much much more. There, I feel challenged and get some satisfaction at progressing. In PVP, I'm all confused, turned around, not knowing what's going on or who to target, and then, usually, dead. Being dead is not fun.

Its the feeling of knowing nothing in a region of the game that is not easy to break into... hence people resort to iway... but tossing that aside.. good pvp is not made by only one person but 8 good players its hard to find a group or be accepted as a newbie.

The time investment required, mainly. And being in a pve guild. I'm satisfied with RA for now.

Because I'm too used to Diablo 2-style PvP. Quick, amusing, stupid, simple.
Don't get me wrong, the PvP in Guild Wars is great, but it's just not my style.

I've just started pvping recently and what stopped me before was simply that I don't have the time to do it on a regular basis...which always left me out of the loop on the current "popular build"...
Not saying that in the sense that I'm going to be using it, just that way i can know how to completly destroy it

For me its a matter of "not knowing" what to do.....I go to the PVP forums on this site and they are like XXX build or UBERDUBER BLAH build can stop UHOH build....doesn't make sense to me. IF there was a good help "FAQ" with all the latest do's and don'ts I think alot more people would PVP....can feel the flames coming
Mega Storm
Good question...why?..because i'de rather (cheezy british accent) "slay tha beasts!" not "get my ass handed to me while trying to have fun just because some group or guild is despiratly clawing at some kind of fame/rank to get to the top by using someone elses build posted all over the internet"
and my thing is shorter to say
I dono why really. I enjoy the thrill of the mission or quest more than I like to see coppycat builds mocking your build when you enter PVP areas. These little "leet" kiddies can have their PVP area and i'll just be happy out in lala land where rank and emotes of animals mean nothing to me while I play with my friends and kill things all day for the fun of it.

its the "The sense of weakness you feel" (e.g lack of self confidence, fear of sucking, mindful of what others think, sensitivity to meaningless words)
there's a workaround tho. just build up confidence by playing regularly, practicing and trying hard to improve. then the sense of weakness will gradually go away.

EXACTLY! I also agree with OP; steep learning curve, feels alienating and confusing. I don't even see the importance of PvP bulds; in the confusion and randomness, my best-laid plans are always made useless. Worst of all, though, is the uncertainty of winning. In PvE, sufficient planning and teamwork allow you to triumph in any situation. In PvP, 50% of the players have to lose; how is that fun? I've been terrible at PvP every time I've tried it and felt alienated; it's too challenging and confusing for experimenting with new builds to be fun at all. I heard Nightfall will be more PvE oriented; I can't wait.

1)if i don't have a certain build i'm kicked
2) if i don't have a certain skill i'm kicked
3) It's to much of a hassle to spam for hours lfg because i'm not rank 3+
4) To much grind involved which is why i have this game, be cause theres little grinding
5)No real positive comes from it
Reasons i do:
1) Pve esque areas like Alliance battles and Fort aspenwood, both are pretty much random and 100% killing
2) i need faction to beat .. well factions!
3) i can unlock skills to buy them in PvE (not the elites)
4) i can get experience
5) Amber?

There are a couple of reasons I don't PvP:
1. Time, I just don't have enough to keep up with the curve or to improve myself to a level where I can compete successfully.
2. I'm just not that good at it. I don't know why, but I can make a really effective build in PvE, but in PvP any build I create ends up on the floor begging "please, sir, stop hitting me!"
3. My guild is pretty much PvE anyway.
4. I don't like losing when I'm not even competitive. I understand that that is what I should expect when I am inexperienced, but getting my butt handed to me repeatedly to eventually get the necessary experience is not as attractive as PvEing.
Ultimately, I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by not PvPing. I love the PvE side of this game, especially for a casual gamer like me

Getting good in PvP would require serious practicing, and I don't really feel like it, I have more than enough stuff I need to practice in real life. I like knowing that when I get to launch GW I can just kick back and relax.

I <3 To PvP in Guild Wars but unfortunately I can’t do it often.
1)Since I am a low rank I am forced to spam for endless hours.

I've been a strict PvE player from the start but recently I've delved into PvP a little. Although sometimes it seems that most monsters out there have more smarts than the average RA PvPer, I still play around there and am learning the way of the "PvPer" gradually. It's a slow and annoying process of fending off Touch Rangers and other various nuisances.
I haven't gone into Team Arenas or even close to GvG because I just dont have a guild or anyone who is really interested in PvP, but the way I see it, I should spend more time in RA before joining one. The easiest way is to just set mini goals like unlocking certain skills or runes, mods, etc and before you know it, you'll have some decent PvP experience under your belt.

non of my build work in PvP. thios popular build don't seem working for me either, they are never my style( my style maybe sucks)
I am not into PvP much except rarely step in RA just to try my luck.
I love PvE and I prefer to help people walk through the missions, (nut they hate Assassin )
get really confuse on PvP too, simply because I am casual player who enjoy not fame but killing monsters and farming

I very rarely PvP due to the scissor-rock-bag effect: individual skill means very little, build & team composition means everything.
I do play PvP, but in FPS's, where individual skill means nearly everything. If I get killed there it's because I was careless or the other guy faster and more accurate than I. In GW I die because I'm a rock and rule against scissors, but he's a bag and rule against rocks.

I PvP in FPS games like Quake, UT, etc... because GW PvP just doesn't generate the same level of adrenelin as owning someone so thoroughly that they accuse you of aim-botting This is a consequence of playing in top-ranked quake clans for several years...

1) Learning curve to steep-In all honesty anyone with half a brain and enough common sense to use it can figure out how to pvp. Ill even give u a crash course.
Monks
-Kiting(E and Q keys along S or W to pull targets away from you onto other part members or overextend them.) and stay in wards
-Infusing quick reflexes watch a red bar until it drops low enough, too fast and then infuse button if not dropping quicky use heal other etc. SB ghostly.
-Other then that if ur a healer its basic healing and kiting and if ur RC prot or along those lines remove the conditions, Drain enchant when necessary for condition removal.
-Carry two weapon sets 1 regular heal weapons 1 +30 energy weapons.
-NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER TAKE A RES
Other spellcasters
-Kite(see monk descrip)
-Ele-blind(ward or do damage)
A tip to warding eles, when you encounter iway set ur wards like this
Ward of melee
Ward of foes
Ward of stability,
they should all overlap
Mesmer-Hex/interrupt
Necromancer(Hex/spike)
Ritualist-spirit spam or spike Res
Melee
-DONT OVEREXTEND SO UR MONKS CAN HEAL YOU keep ur monks in ur aggro bubble.
-Go after their squishies(2 warriors should never fight eachother unless its everyone else is dead)
-Follow group leader directions and press Ctrl+click to call a target.
Ranger
-Simply choking gas interupt trap or spirit spam or spike urchoice.
-kite like spell casters
-fight with other spirit spammers.
2)Rank grind FFS getting ur R3 is very incredibly easy -iway, simply do a pug or two every weekend thats it get some names of good players on ur list, then u can do 5+ pugs a week and guess what 3-4 fame a pug x5=20 fame, 9 weeks and ur done, how long did it take to beat prophecies?
3) Pve guilds, that is simple in every pve guild there is at least 1 or 2 people who want to pvp most cases more. talk to them tell them u want to make some groups, start running some Nr/tranq or Bspike or w/e build u want.
4) Not wanting to loose, EVERYONE HATES LOSING you are not the only one. I personally get very angry when i loose but i usually control myself and say ok w/e we will win next time. If you are new you should not loose 24/7 you will win some you will loose some, id say for every five battles u play with a decent build u should win at least 1 or 2 thats 1-3 fame a battle. IF u really want to pvp and the guild doesnt send me a whisper ill add u to friends

I don't play much pvp because losing isn't fun. And to win you have to beat a bunch of people who have never played pve, but rather spend all their time organizing and researching the perfect teams and builds so they can climb their way to the top. Its just way too competitive. I prefer the occasional tomb runs and exploring.
And I know there are some good players out there that do pve and pvp, but I frankly don't feel that the pros outway the cons with such a steep learning curve and skill gap.
All in All, why would I want to get owned by some cookie cutter when I can fight my way to some really cool waterfall, or some other unique vantage that the designers hid in the game?

I've done a little PvPing over the 13 months I've had this game, and the one thing that really deters me from investing more time in it are the types of people you run across while playing. I don't mind losing (no, really!), but what I can't stand is the poor sportsmanship displayed by some of the other players. Most players are gratious when they win, but the nasty few always feel compelled to make snide comments. It was one of things that really grated when my monk and necro had to play Aspenwood. I know it's not "real" PvP, but the same attitude prevails there. You offer a gg/hf comment on local chat, and get remarkably stupid/offensive comments from some of your opponents. It's just something I don't feel like subjecting myself to.
Note* I am not generalizing to all PvP folks here. I'm commenting on the few that give PvP a bad name.

I've been gaming almost my entire life, and I'm 33. In those terms, online battles/pvp is a pretty new thing.
The only game that I really got into playing vs ppl is Soldier of Fortune 2. Basically you just bust out your boomstick and get it on. Very exhilarating but couldn't do it for too long. I played a lot of Diablo 2 online but then I played a lot of it soloing high-end areas...in hardcore.
In terms of why I don't pvp/gvg/ab (hardly ever) is because I'm basically a single player addict. I love the huge expanse role playing hack and slashing, story progression, starting as a level 1 peon and advancing into ultra-high end. If anyone's played Baldur's Gate, and kept that same character through all four BG's (including both expansions), you know how incredible it can be to take a player through everything, where you really do see yourself going from a barkeep to a literal god.
That being told there are more pragmatic reasons why I don't pvp. First off, it's nice to take a break whenever you want and leave the game where it is. Also, no annoying 8 year olds trying to act all tough. No name calling, idiots pressuring, or pressuring idiots. I like to do things my way at my pace. Then again I don't want to let anyone down if I d/c, or gotta go, or whatever.
That's basically it.

Well.. I'm trying to learn, but in order to learn, I need either a good teacher or someone with leadership qualities who can tell me what to do, and when I ask 'why' can tell me why.
RA gets boring fast, so does fort aspenwood.. and Jade quarry never has enough people

I'm a PvE guy for all the reasons stated above. I do like Random Arenas on occasion, do OK, they are low pressure PvP. And I really like Fort Aspenwood in Factions which is not real PvP, but PvP integrated into a mission with random groups.
Real PvP is just not for the casual player, I don't think.

Regardless of how awesome you are at a game, the transition from PvE to PvP is a big one, that's fine... I've not got a problem with that, but it is. Furthermore, I do have half a brain, two halves actually... and just because you "can" figure something out, doesn't mean the learning curve isn't quite steep.
... and no, that doesn't mean I think there needs to be a change.
I do appreciate your offer to the community to help them, that's a very nice gesture!
I've got to say one thing for PvP, the best learning experiance I've had, is in the level 1 - 10 arena. It's very simple and teaches you what works and what doesn't within about 20 matches... but still, that's a far cry from the serious PvP.

The first half does define a lot of people in pve. They try to pvp, give up, and don't go back. It also just as fully describes the pvpers which scare away said pve'ers. The whiny jerks who rage quit when their team loses because of the other teams willingness to win.Willingness to win meaning willingness to put more time into pvp, therefore becoming better at it, whether it be through learning counters or just spamming the same stuff again and again.
But overall that article was simply cynical and disillusioned. Its the view of someone willing to do anything to win, regardless of "fun"; which was downplayed as a scrub attribute.
If you find winning at any cost to be fun, go right ahead. I for one will find my own way of having fun. because though the article stated the exact phrase "play competitive games" it focused on the competitive and forgot that in the end you're just Playing a Game. Unfortunately too many people have forgotten that. They want things to be their way only, without regard to anyone else.
Tyria is big enough for all of us, so lets all just go have some fun.

I play GW to relax and have fun, my guild think the same way.
We do quests and missions while we chat and have fun, we never take the game serious. it's just plain fun.
we're not competative in any way.
In the 15 months I've played this game I've done 3 PvP matches and a couple of GvG's.
I have no urge to learn how to play PvP at all. it's just way too serious.
Like our Guild Leader once said "the PvE portion of GW is just a glorified chatroom" I kinda agree. it gives us something to do while we chat
