I just dont understand why people dont like the mesmer. Can someone please tell me?

The biggest problem with mesmers, is that the have no flash effects for them. When my ele hits a guy, we all see it. A mes spins and the guys health goes down, if no one is paying attention no one even sees the mes cast. The only one that knows the mes is killing is the guy being cast on, and he isn't talking.

Most of the classes has obvious uses that easy to see and factor it.

Messmer are a very vauable asset that most people have no clue how they work.

People go with what they know a lot in random pugs vs an unknown.

Or a good way to sum it up from my favorite Healbot comic:

whenever they zone to RA, they get slaughtered coz they only have ether feast to defend themselves.

or hated meaning good mesmers are hated by opposing team.

Mesmers are the anti-class. They efficiently and effectively counter other classes so that their skills are rendered useless or unusable. Playing one requires more than just spamming their skills, it requires skills that work together and the knowledge of when to use them. And it never hurts to have a quick trigger finger when playing one.

they don't really pose a threat to me, just a hex here or there, backfire is their only good one that gets me, but even then, when ever it's casted on me in pvp, I'm done casting for a while... playing one, the skill recharge is horrible
I don't hate them... they're just not a threat

Simple, mesmers in general, don't pick on the same target as the rest of the team, therefore, from a warriors point of view, the mesmer isn't doing anything. Any other caster probably sees the mesmer spinning or casting.. well.. something.. but has no idea what.

In pvp, mesmers are well-liked as long as they're on your team!

Install GW, create a mesmer, and be amazed at how little mesmer hate there really is in the game

A year ago, mesmers had problems finding a group. Now? I find getting a group is really not that difficult and have seen the occasional person ask to have a mes in their group.

I posted this response in another thread, but I will post it here too ^_^

IMHO: Mesmers are the most useful, most versatile class out there. They can easily take out casters. They can be effective in taking down tanks. They can play a fast-cast healing build. Illusionary weapon lets them tank. And y'know, there's even a mesmer Droks running build. Memsers are underrated completely.

However there are few people who actually know how to correctly play a mesmer. But when you do find a good mesmer, they are a valuable asset to the team for sure.

even though they shouldn't...

But it's right, the role of the Mesmer is to be the perfect counter "to a particular class". In a mesmer's most simplest form, he/she can be a counter-attacker or a counter-spellcaster. When you start getting more and more specific about what you can counter, that's when PvP comes into play.

In PvE, Mesmers are most affected by build changes depending on where they are in the game. If you take for instance, an anti-warrior build into Boreas Seabed, then you wont be as useful as an Interrupt Mesmer.

but as soon as you do pick a certain anti style, the other one is going to rush and rip you apart

what kind of p.o.s. mesmers are you playing against?

mesmers, it is generally agreed, are one of the best classes in the game (this is particularly true in pvp, though in pve they are not as popular).

they have all kinds of nifty effects, like degen, warrior shutdown, energy denial, caster shutdown, they spike well (shatter enchantment ftw) great energy management, hex removal, debuffs...the list goes on and on. They're so versatile it's crazy.

Anyone who thinks mesmers aren't good are just bad at the game.

Then you aren't playing against very good mesmers.

My mesmer owned Raisu Palace with Guilt, Shame and Cry of Frustration. Who else can interrupt Star Ancient Koosun's deadly Starburst???

In the days of SF farming, i played MM some of the time and half of my skillbar was mesmer interrupts and shutdowns because without them it could be near impossible to kill monk bosses. The abundance of the wammo-mentality means that lots of people don't understand them and think that Meteor Shower and minions are the be all and end all of PvE. Plain ignorance in my personal opinion.

The biggest threat to a mesmer is another mesmer.

mesmers are fantastic even in pve, ever wonder why the enemies are down to low health and nothing seems to be happening, thats your mesmer, if they had flashy glowy lights evertime something got hurt they'd be more popular

mesmers are always welcome in my team

As sum one mentioned before, mesmers dont have the appeal of other classes. Tanks can go whith crazy weapons and armors and sustain TONS of damage, rangers can tame a pet and trow arrows and so on, monk can heal and protect and keep the team togheter, elemental can take down TONS of dmg at once in a large area whith glory effects, and so on... Mesmer for instance, oo well... they can do that pretty purple aura thing ^^

I would say also the armor make em a poor PVE choice, and since they are not MASS DMG dealers or MASS MOB CONTROL their job into PvE is just ripped off to fast casting his secondary class skills and stuff.

Another thing against the mesmer is the dificult to control one, and truth be said, i would ONLY recomend you building one after u already got enough playing whith other classes since u actualy gotta no what patterns of build your enemys are running in order to counter them properly

As necros once were, mesmer are NOW the least played class on PVE and PVP, simple because these are "non regular" classes, necros cant trow away TONS of dmg in one target, nor mesmers can take agroo of 40 - 50 monsters and hope to stay alive, but still, knowing how to mannage both classes makes em worthy adversaries... The necros had surpass this barrier, even thought i still see a lot of HORRIBLE necros running coockie cuuter builds and thinking they are invincibles, and truthly i think the mesmers will get the same chance, maybe better armors would help but whathever ^^

Later.

Mesmers aren't very popular in PvE, but in PvP, they're generally pretty feared. If you've never had problems with a mesmer, you've never played against even a half decent one.

Since you're new to the game, you should know that missions and quests are build so that not every classes are required to complete the game. That usually means that mesmers, assassins and ritualists have the short end of the stick, while monks, rangers, necros, elementalists and warriors are more popular with random groups. I would suggest you to make your first character out of these last five, so you have an easier time on your first run through the game.

If you intend to eventually step in PvP, then you should know that mesmers are an important part of any organized group. Somebody saying that mesmer is not a popular choice in PvP has only limited random arena experience :P.

Its ironic that in PvE mesmers never get on most teams... but they're almost the most annoying enemies you'll ever meet once your out there.

Don't believe me? Try using magic against a Banished Dream Rider and tell me how many times they interrupt you.

Maybe thats why they're hated though ^^

PvE is about killing hoardes of enemies. Save for a deep wound nuker kind of build, mesmers are not equipped to kill many foes at once. Towards the end of the game, this is fine, because foes are so hard to take down that bringing a mesmer along makes it much easier. For most of Prophecies, however, mesmers are completely unnecessary, and much slower than elementalists or necros at killing. This mentality of not-as-good-as-eles still permeates PvE, even in Factions, where the mobs aren't as large and the enemies are in general stronger.
