use your existing chars as heroes?
Lynxius
Funny thing is i imagined the exact same thing the OP did.
I mean the only situation where our own characters have actually been together was in the original Prophecies Screen, where all the characters are in a camp Fire, and you can see them all at once. Ah good days.
Also look at it like this:
"Dude#1-Hey dude what Heroes are you taking?"
"Dude#2- Huuum, Koss..."
"Dude#1-Wtf Koss? Koss is big n00b!"
-Naturally theres a big ingenuaty on this generalization, but the point is*
*turning characters into heroes would customize the battlefield much more, instead of seeing Koss passing by...then his Clone passing by after him.

I think this is a GREAT idea in the core, but i think we need to fix some details to make sure its not imbalanced or exploiting the game.
FIRST:
Hero Hench dont have storage.
Therefore Character Hero Hench based on our other characters should NOT have storage either.
They should be BLANK with no weapon access (unless you pull it out of storage) to protect from duping.
SECOND:
Hero hench armor is based on their level.
So their armor lvl of the Character Hero Hench would not be equal to what the real playable character has, but rather the character's level, just like the regular Hero hench.
--------------------------
HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE. (In my opinion)
(i will use my characters for examples)
1) Unlock the option of Character Heroes.
Unlocking should be a END GAME option. As in after you beat the last boss.
2) Choices of Character Heroes.
Character Heroes have to MATCH the Hero character's profession that they replace.
In other words, if you want to use your warrior has a Character Hero, it would have to replace (temporarily) Koss. If i wanted my monk as a Character Hero, she would replace a monk Hero.
Also, you cant dupe a character. If im using my warrior Yachiru, i cant have a Character Hero of my warrior also.
3) Armor and Equipment and Skills.
When you make your Character Hero, you choose what armor they will wear based on what is in the inventory of that character at the time of creation.
So Duckie wants to have Yachiru as her warrior hench. She rolls a Character Hero, and since Yachiru has 4 sets of armor in her inventory at all times, she can pick and choose which ones to use for the Character Hero that represents Yachi.
Character Hero Yachiru will be equipped with the armor you chose (runes attached to the armors are included, just to be fair).
Now for weapons. Character Hero Yachiru will be equipped with the weapon set Koss was using before you replaced him (so you dont delete those items by accident). If i want to use the same weapon the REAL Yachi is using, id have to put it into storage and apply it to the Character Hero.
And finally Skills. My Character Hero of Yachiru will have the same skills available as Koss. Simple.
4) Cool stuff:
Choose your own taunts/shouts for your character heroes ^_^
--------------------------
I think at the core of it, this idea would basically be allowing us to have heroes whos SKIN changes to that of our existing character.

I think that the main idea is good, having just how your character was before being your hero. Having it have the same exact stuff as the hero would have is pointless lol. It would be a waste of time for anet to switch heros with characters unless they were your actual characters, not just a hero that has the face of your character.

The reason i think it should be like this is just following the basic mantra the flows through guild wars.
Skins change, functionality doesnt.
All max level axes are the same functionality regardless of the skin. Theres no uber rare axe that causes more damage.
If the Hero hench actually WAS our character, it would be very imbalanced, imo.
------------
The idea is good, but if you wanna be realistic about implementing it into the game, it has to be BALANCED and non-exploitable.
having access to more storage and gold via character hero henches is a serious explot imo.
Leveling more than 1 character at a time is a serious exploit.
Thats why my idea is merely changing skins (with your choice of existing armor). Its feasable and does not imbalance the game. So far in this thread, im the only one addressing the issue realistically.

Yea, I still don't understand how having our unused characters as heroes can be exploited. It's still their inventory, so how do we end up with more (inventory spaces or items) than we started with?

You Hero's would only be able to change their armour Runes, and equipped weapons/offhands from your Character's inventory.

I like the idea (with the proper restrictions of course) as it would finaly let me have my full clan out. It would also allow me to play a bit more with some of my characters since I would play with 4 at a time instead of just one.

1-1 does not equal 2.
And Since you can't Have the Character you are playing also be a hero, no duping.
meowmeow89
It is an awesome idea, just getting it into the game would be a bit iffy to the devs. Also would you hero character gets drops, or no like the henchies? I mean drops as your main character and the drops in your heros packs.
Dougal Kronik
When your other characters are "Heroes", they have no access to their backpacks, beltpouches, or bags. Therefore any drops assigned to your main character, and only those, will get added to your inventory.
tuperwho
This is an outstanding idea, with a little work. Obviously, it would need to be set to not allow you to level multiple characters at once. In general, it would need to limit everything you could do with your character/hero to being like a henchman.... no inventory, doesn't allow you to collect items, etc. Basically, just make it so that the hench you bring along would look like your character and have the same name, and also have the skills you select for it (like the upcoming Heroes in Nightfall).

Oh, and to the people concerned about leveling, how about either
A) Your characters don't get any levels (or drops) when they are considered heros.
Or
B) You can only use your characters as heros with other characters that are already lvl 20, and then you can only use lvl 20 characters. For example
Assume I have 3 different characters so far. They are Bob, Jim, and John. Bob is lvl 20 and so is Jim, but john is lvl 19.
If I try to play on John, I can't use my other characters as heros.
If I try to play on Bob or Jim, they can use my other characters as heros. The only thing is, I can't make John one of my heros because he is not level 20.
Or
C) Exactly the same as B, exept in order to use your other characters as heros, you need to beat the game. For example
Bob has beat the game. Jim and John haven't. This means I can only get the special heros when I play as Bob, but since I haven't completed the game with Jim or John, I can't use them as my heros.
That way they will have to be lvl 20, because I doubt they will be able to beat the game if they aren't lvl 20.
Personally, I like A better. It's easier and simpler, but as long as I can use my characters as heros eventually, I'm happy.

Allow your characyters to level just like the heros do. The experience is only a fraction of what you could get if you solo'd or got power levelled.

It would just be basically the same as having heroes but better.
Dont see what all the fuss is about. We had already discussed the issues of looting earlier and decided against it.
As for the AI thing... So what?! it will be better than heroes, you'll have more control over armor, weapons, skills and the best thing, appearance. I'd swap Fatboy Koss with my necro anyday. 1 cos my nec looks better, (my nec doesn't have a daft afro) and 2 I know My nec is going to do a better job whether it's AI or not.

but, i take it that you rather see hero's stay as grouping with you everywhere, instead your own characters on the same account joining the group with you? I don't in any way see how this is related for making more humans play with you, seems like your replacing fire with electricity situation.
I wouldn't really see how it would matter if the hero's you were packing along would cause more problems if they were the same characters you built up on the same account or not.
The only problem i would see and take in consideration as the reason this wont be done is, your newly made dervishes will have like lvl 20 allies in lvl 1-6 zones. Thats basicly the idea I would assume of not allowing Account characters as heros.

First, yes, you can already choose your skills and weapons and stuff for your heros, but they still aren't your characters. The main point of this is to have at least some of your characters on your account in the same party. I don't really understand the rest of what you said...
Also to those people that keep worrying about power lvling/running, I don't see how that is really a problem. I see plenty of people running/pwr lvling for free or tips(which is almost free). But if it's really that much of a concern for you, then how about either your characters don't lvl when they are your heros, or they need to be lvl 20 when they are your heros? And then they don't unlock new areas when they are heros? That solves that...
As for item duping...I don't understand how that would work. Either you have to equip your characters when their heros with weapons the first time you get them, or they have the same things equiped as the acuall versions of them. If they had the same things equiped then it would go like this.
My monk has a green staff equiped. I go on my necro and use my monk as a hero. He has the green staff equiped and if I unequip it and then log off and log onto my monk, then my monk no longer has the staff equiped because my necro has it. I don't see any duping posibilities with that...
I know that I already posted something similar in this thread already, but it seems like no one saw it or they didn't understand it...
Oh, and just in case I forgot to before,

I always wondered how my characters would act as a team. As for the loot, xp, and junk who cares. I say if you use your other characters as heros, they don't get drops or xp ( I just want to see them in action side by side )
But since hero's never exceed the level of your character they shoudl make it avaible when they are all level 20. None of this must beat prohecies or factions stuff.
I've beaten Faction 3 times, Prophecies once...I lose interest in the "story" when I get to the ember light camp.

Lemee refrase this in an easy to understand way. Your basicly taking heroes but having your characters... its pointless. I doubt you will be able to get them to powerlevel you even if it mattered. And the drops would be like henchmen are if it was supposed to drop for them it wouldnt. I dont really have a problem against it its just absoulutley pointless... Even if it was possible its almost pointless because there is no point to bring them unless they came through the missions with you and got new towns. Get what i mean?

well i don't think they're gonna increase your control over your heroes, however i don't see what all the fuss is about powerlevelling yourself.
any idiot can do it, whether with a hero, or all alone. i will explain
solo: if you chose a monk secondary, bring spirit bond, PS, essence bond, balthazars spirit. the rest is optional. find any area with melee only baddies, take off half your armor, and bam, powerlevelling. i did that to powerlevel my assassin from 12 to 20 in the troll cave... you'd be surprised how easy it really is.
hero method : equip a hero with any 55 or 600 hp build, and set a flag for him to aggro everything. you can make them activate skills by clicking on their skillbars already... so it can be done while you just sit back and watch your hero take the heat.
just wait and see, im gonna make my warrior hero run droks using flags just to spite you all

AI already received a buff regarding the heroes
AND they have access to all unlocked skills on your account.
So in what way is that not the same as having your own chars running around?
Your own chars would be artifcially controlled as well so it changes nothing.

Ok, I have several points so stick with me.
:: Reasons for Implementation ::
:: Ways to Prevent Abuse ::
Right now, it would appear the reason people don't like this concept is they fear it will be abused. There are ways this can be avoided though.
:: Conclusion ::
By implementing the concept in this thread, ANet will help to stave off frustration and boredom from having to repeat new expansions with every single character a player has created. By using the above techniques to prevent abuse, this can be done without risk of harming the workings of the game.
-
:: Reasons for Implementation ::
** I have TEN lvl20 PvE characters, one for each profession. With each new expansion, it is nice to get all of my characters at least to a point where I can buy all the regular skills and try to cap new good elites. However, with a new expansion comes new characters for me. It is going to get to a point where I just say "screw it" because I don't even want to think about getting 20 characters through an expansion and keep doing the same thing over and over. If I was to progress up to four of my characters at the same time, at least in storyline and unlocked towns, then I would be much more likely to continue playing this game. I haven't read anyone mention this benefit so far in this thread or at least couldn't find it. This to me is the greatest point to this topic. Guild Wars needs to keep the interest of its gamers, and eventually this will mean keeping multiple expansion owners from getting too frustrated at moving all his characters through a new expansion. The only other way to achieve this is by having towns unlocked by one character, unlock for all your characters.
** It was mentioned that you could use one of your characters if you ever needed them to fill a mission role for a mission or quest. I don't think this is as much of a benefit as Heroes fill that absence nicely. However, heroes do not share weapons or armor (which they really should among all your characters, but that is another thread) where being able to use my PvE characters would make it so I don't need to buy a weapon for each Hero, for each character. For me, this would be up to 100 weapons easily (10x10), and that is without getting weapons for different builds for these heroes. Sharing of weapons among the same hero (ie Koss and Koss) would eliminate this need, but for now it is a good reason for this topic.
:: Ways to Prevent Abuse ::
Right now, it would appear the reason people don't like this concept is they fear it will be abused. There are ways this can be avoided though.
** There is worry about power leveling your own characters. Currently, a player can get power leveled through guild mates or paying players, so this isn't exactly a huge problem in my opinion. However the way to prevent this has already been mentioned. Simply prevent the loading of any character who is not lvl20 already. This also will work vice-versa by only allowing a new character to use his other characters until that one he is using has reached lvl20 itself.
** A slightly more extreme method for limiting abuse would use the same concept as above. Instead of requiring lvl20 for all characters in question, require that both the main and loaded characters have completed at least one campaign. This ensures that each character must have experienced a full expansion before moving quickly through future expansions.
** Farming with multiple characters was mentioned to be a potential abuse. This is easily prevented by using the same workings of heroes. The loaded characters could not earn XP, Gold, Items, etc. They still get their portion of XP and drops, but the owner sees no benefit from it. There goes the abuse for "green" drops, gold, or even XP to earn skill points quickly.
:: Conclusion ::
By implementing the concept in this thread, ANet will help to stave off frustration and boredom from having to repeat new expansions with every single character a player has created. By using the above techniques to prevent abuse, this can be done without risk of harming the workings of the game.

agreed with above restrictions that would be added, however.
Also, using level 20 heroes to powerlevel you is already technically possible, some heroes come at level 20! the answer of course would be to disallow the character heroes from entering at a point where level 20 would be overpowered.
An excellent time they could come is at exactly the point where out of campaign characters enter the campaign, LA, kaineng, and consolate docks.
agreed with above restrictions that would be added, however.
Also, using level 20 heroes to powerlevel you is already technically possible, some heroes come at level 20! the answer of course would be to disallow the character heroes from entering at a point where level 20 would be overpowered.

I was having the same idea going through my head and it's good to see so many people already agreeing to it!

Don't think I like the way this COULD be exploited... Rumor had it that Razah was going to be this... One of your characters from your character list. But Personally I think it would be overtly exploited with Running or Dragging characters to areas they should not be in. Thus Power leveling a lev 5 say to lev 20 in like 15mins... Imagine dragging a new build into Torment and just leaving it idle while the rest of you clean up giving it Massive EXP...
In any case, there are also Dupe Threats in this design, and other problems with the concept... So in the end I don't think it will happen...

=HT=Ingram ... Did you read my post at all???
Akhilleus ... Some players like to experience many aspects to the game like making different builds, etc. That is half the fun of it for some of us, not the grind of doing the same steps over and over to get to the same place.
