PvE (only) would be the best thing that can happen. People bought this game for the no monthly fee, for the PvE content. And btw you guys can still own eachother in GW1.

For every PvP player that leaves, imo many PvE players will buy the game instead. You're outnumbered by a huge PvE playerbase. I think Anet realises PvE is the future.

MOD EDIT: This is not a PvE vs. PvP discussion thread. Any such conversations will be deleted promptly.

Anyone besides me noticed that guildwarseyeofthenorth.com has NOT been registered yet? 40 armour sets?!?! And a "massive 150 new skills"? I think who wrote this has played (but not much) of Guild Wars and that this is a sham. First of all, 150 new skills is not massive. With 10 classes that comes to 15 new skills each... hardly massive, and then of which 50 are PVE only? 10 new PvP skills each class??! I dunno... Count me a skeptic.

I'll buy Guild Wars two... maybe... but I've spent so much time on my GW1 characters that I don't think I can just drop them

I'd prefer just endless expansions rather than a full-fledged sequel. But that's just me.

The smaller skill number would be appropriate for an expansion-set. This is supposedly not a stand-alone campaign remember.

40 armor = 4 per class. Maybe the core profs will get a few more than the expansion.

Many PvP players have been *asking* for no new skills, because of the horrible state game balance is in. All they want is better balancing so more than a handful of existing skills are actually usable. Fewer skills and no new classes is welcome news, especially if the expansion will push/fund more rebalancing efforts.

P.S. I guess I've never thought about when sequels to MMOs come out. Did all EQ1/AC1/Lineage players immediately quit when the sequels for those were announced? Did any of those games let you port your characters over? Usually when devs want to make a sequel, they want to shake up things enough that old characters wouldn't fit the new framework, so I wouldn't expect any kind of useful porting over. The new game may feature a higher or lower level cap, expanded skill bars, different items and weapons, and many current skills won't exist in the new game because they encourage boring play (SF spam anyone?)

Personally I'll be happy to sit comfortably at UAX and PvP every now and then, and just skip out on GW2s likely subscription model.

Got here a little late.. but I call BS.

There is nothing on any NCSoft/Anet site, read the text, it says:

"NCSOFT HAS ANNOUNCED the development and release dates for regular annual expansion of Guild Wars universe", which is nothing we don't already know, it then tacks on the this "Eye of the North" trash.

It doesn't even sound like leaked information, as pointed out on the wiki it uses the british spelling "Armour", not the usual "Armor" C&P, it mentions "dungeons", since when did any release call this a dungeon? WoW-speak, sounds more like third-hand rumours; or stretching it a lot, a transcript of leaked info.

Don't believe everything you read, especially not from that site.

On another note, norns: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norns ;p

As long as they somehow link Guild Wars 1 to Guild Wars 2, then I'm happy to stay around for a couple years to play GW2. Can't afford to lose all my precious titles and etc. If not, I may just go back to FPS.

EDIT: After reading the bit by Skuld, my views have changed and I agree with the prospect of this being BS. Eh, sounded good for awhile though. We'll have to wait as usual.

Losing my main character for a brand new Guild Wars is a double-edged sword for me. Losing my main character would be a drag, but starting over completely (including the entire game community) would be neat, giving me a feeling of a "new frontier".

I think you should be able to do that, spending time and money on GW1, you should be able to transfer accounts to GW2.

Monthly Fees will lose me as a customer.

Plus, I believe it's important to allow existing characters to transfer over - considering all the time people have put into the game.

If the GW2 thing were true (I'm calling bullshit on that one), I'd see no reason why you'd be able to transfer your character to the next installment. Would someone be able to enlighten me on how this "character transfer" would be fair?

As to the Eye of the North, if that's what it's called: Sounds awesome. I was always hoping that they would make an expansion pack and not a stand-alone campaign, even though the latter has many benefits. I'm really looking forward to it.

Interesting read. At first I was very excited, now I'm really not. If this were to be true, it sounds as if Ch1 would not be compatible with Ch2, expecially if they are going to rework the graphics.

If they came out with GW2, and all of my characters who i had worked with all of this time, and had done countless things with, if they were just pointless and I couldn't continue on with them in GW2, Well I doubt I would play anymore.

Again, this sounds really odd though, As everyone else has stated I don't see how this site has this info from NCsoft, yet it is not on the GW website nor on NCsofts website. I mean when factions/nightfall were announced, it was listed on the GW website.

The idea of the add-on is kind of a neat idea, but it also sounds strange. 50 skills for just PvE? When have they ever done something like this?

I also don't get why everyone wants to bring over their characters. Yes, you put alot of time into them, but guess what? They are hardly any better than a noob who just got their first character to level 20, which was the point of GW. Their collector items are almost as good as yours, they have decent functional skills if not your UAS, they have max armor even if it isn't black FoW. The only hard work you could carry over are skins and titles that would be utterly irrelevant in the new game which will have it's own leet skins and titles, and it seems about impossible that they'd want to carry over the huge number of often trashy or gimmicky skills from the original.

Eye of the North may be just a working title at this point if not trademarked. That would fit well with the GW:EN joke. While there's reason to believe some or all of this is fake, a reporter paraphrasing missions into "dungeons" (and especially "armour" wtf?) isn't very relevant, and you have to explain where that shot came from to completely dismiss all of it.

The "major update to the GW franchise coming 3rd quarter'07" we already heard about could well be this "Eye of the North" thing. Many people said before that "major update" doesnt sound like a next stand-alone chapter, but this thing fits perfectly.
But does that confirm anything? Of course not because we got the NCSoft info before this...

The screenshot looks very real, looks like generated by the GW engine but shows a new structure and new trees. The sky, terrain, snow, the way trees are rendered and the style of the building looks very GW-like.

And now info about GW2... this is most surprising - at this early point of development we got such detailed bits of info like the names of playable races and a supposed big game feature.
It seems very probable that a whole next game went into development after Nightfall release and thats why the strict campagin release schedule changed.

And now a note to all doomsayers: GW1 will live and prosper untill GW2 release years for sure, and will be properely supported. In that very very long time (much longer than the time past since GW release) it will receive many updates and much new content. "Eye of the North" doesnt have to be the last release for GW1, I would expect at least one more in 2008.
Past 2010 GW servers will be kept alive and at that point the game will be balanced and have enough features and content already done to keep it going with minimal effort like firing events or adjusting some variables. Remember that 1 online player takes only a maximum of 2kB/s bandwidth
If you really don't believe it can last that long, think about Diablo2 which is still alive and going, and I even know a bunch of players that STARTED playing it recently and are fascinated about it. I expect it will be exactly the same with GW.

Guild Wars 2 will more than likely be a reality at some point or another and 2009/2010 (about 5 years after the original's release) is not entirely unlikely.

These details being real or not is another story, it is possible it is all BS. Until we hear official word from NCSoft/Arena Net I wouldn't be too exicited/worried.

If it is a full fledged sequel I see NO reason to be able to transfer full character/items over. It pretty much just won't happen and probably couldn't. If they develop a new game from the ground up, on a new engine then the manner of which this would have to be done is just not very feasible. What is more likely is some kind of veteran reward + name holding service (a la EQ2).

As far as the GW:EN expansion goes, I'd rather have a standalone campaign that built upon the franchise rather than an add-on, but either way I'll buy it and probably the sequel when/if it is in fact made. Monthly fees on the sequel won't scare me away by any means but I think it would be a bad business move on A.Net's part as having GW be without it has been one of its stronger features.

All in all, I'll beileve this news when and only when its confirmed, the Inquirer is kind of shady. Its about like flipping a coin on the one hand they do break NDAs and such and release info to the public they are not supposed to, on the other hand they tend to jump the gun on stories and not get the whole truth because of it.

Interesting, at the moment I have to say I don't believe it as its such a departure from what ANet have been saying (Gaile has always been talking about GW going for years up to chp6,7+). However I'm not against any of it if it does turn out to be true, an expansion of just lvl20 content would be nice.

What I don't want though is a GW2 where I have to start a new ele from scratch. I love my ele, I've been playing it for almost 2 years, I don't want a new ele I want my ele! But as I say, at the moment I have a hard time believing its true.

One thing that makes no sense at all to me; The streaming content system Guild Wars uses. Was it not put in so that the current game could be constantly updated? Why make a whole new sequal ?

I seem to remember a guy saying somewhere (Think its on the making of DVD or an interview with Anet staff, Don't remember sorry :S) something along the lines of how in a few years time GW would still be competetive, with the latest sound/graphics engines thanks to the streaming technology.

Seems odd they would create something "Future proof" like GW then turn around and say, well infact hold on...Scrap this lets start a whole other game. Leading me to believe this article is VERY inaccurate or BS.

Ever played the Baldur's gate and Icewind Dale series? One could transfer his character without having an advantage over newly created characters. To give an example, level starts at 20 in gw2 and ends at level 40, it's as easy as that. Again only 20 levels, same setup as gw1. Same logic for armor, weapons etc.

I'm guessing someone spilt the beans at PCGamer... and yes, PCGamer paid NCSoft to show the news there, and not anywhere else. Heres a math explanation.

Huge Guild Wars News + Exclusive to PCGamer= ANET makes money and PCGamer gets more subscriptions.

I don't think I'm paranoid but I've been brainstorming a bit.

Alot of things would actually tie together to make this seem believeable as much as unbelievable. Especially relating to GW2

Primarily as someone had already pointed out... the pure focus on PvE, this makes more then enough sense. The reason I would like to transfer my character over is for two main reasons, my time and effort into skills unlocked/captured/missions etc along with personal preference of the character name. I'm not too worried from someone stealing the name due to the fact its unique, yet at the same time I want my warriors' story to continue. The GW:EN notation is so taboo I would actually think Anet would have had this planned. The Gwen quest items being left everywhere, the untold story of what had happened, and a missing part of the map (north) where I would have suspected Cantha to finally connect to Tyria and Elona.

Guild Wars 2 shouldn't exist in my honest opinion... why would they want to change something that can be changed by having another stand alone game compatible? New race? No problem add a new continent. More skills? No problem, extend the bar Anet never promised they would limit all skills to 8 would they? Extended guild roster functions? No problem 4-5 lines of programming and shabam you have officers, co-leaders, leaders, chief whatever...

I don't see the point, but what is scary is that it is appeasing to PvE because... well most frankly alot of pure PvE'rs have the attitude, in my experience, that they just love new environments and are not too concerned about how long they have spent unlocking skills, unlocking mods, gaining fame, etc.

The Baldur's Gate/some other game example was great, lower your characters level as he goes through the campaign then eventually obtaining everything back. I love the ressurection from the hall of heroes idea...

I wonder if the notation for guild wars 2 is just another "cycle" of stand alone games that are compatible. There is nothing functionally wrong with the game at all ladies and gentlemen, why make a new one to change it, investing time, money, effort to possibly break even after so many years of doing nothing.

A great example, if you exclude the people who shot their mothers or what not is Everquest. From add on to add on that game lasted more then enough time.

If you don't wanna read my random mumbling in summary:
Blizzard used Plague Touch on Anet, lets hope Gaile can Dshot this.
