At least--it sounds like--we can tie GW2 to GW1 account in some way, which means maybe we can still keep our guilds.
My main concern is losing touch with the guild/disbanding because half are in one game and half in another with no lines of communication.

Wow, sounds exciting and scary at the same time! I trust that ANet will keep GW 2 within the same style that made us love GW 1 so much.

As I said earlier, there will be no transfer of characters to or from Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. There will be many benefits to having a history with Guild Wars. Please see comments shared concerning "The Hall of Monuments."

After reading, I saw a small caption I missed... there will be a place with memorials of sorts for your [gw1] characters' achievements (titles).
Characters will not transfer over.

Edit to actually get back to the point I forgot to make:
The "grinding" would occur when players realise that to stay on top of the PvP game, they must have 2007+ levels. Perhaps 100+ levels is the new R3 for HA? :P
As I see it, the attribute cap is a large part of the balance in the game as it is. Perhaps it's time for a re-balance with GW2, and with that may come a higher cap (or none?), but with the current system I don't see it working.

Should I buy two copies and give one of the cd-key to someone I know online. Or save my money and buy onlny one copy?

I'm, overall, hoping that within two years they remove the Guild Wars name from the title.
This. Is. Not. Guild Wars.
I'd much rather ANET come out with a new RPG, abandoning GuildWars in the process, over giving us rubbish like this. Even if levels are cosmetic, people *will* be segregated. I mean, look at Rank as it is...
Further BAD NEWS for all of us who play GW for what it is, not becuase we're too cheap to be paying for an alternative...
50 PvE Skills? I almost threw-up...wait...I did. This is quite possible the most hideous thing I've seen in my entire GuildWars existence. Do you want to know what this is screaming to me? This screams that GW cannot balance itself anymore. Why *should* skills function differently in PvE and PvP? They shouldn't. But, once again proven, ANET is too incompetent to find a way to make the AI more challenging, no, they're going to throw large numbers of overpowered enemies at us instead of skilled, or challenging, AI.
This day has made me shed a tear for the GW I know and love. I can guarentee you that I *will not* be buying the next expansion until I see someting resolved. If, after community response from people I know or value their opinion, I will decide to buy the game. Right now it's looking grim ANET, it's looking mighty grim.
NOTE: I noticed people are happy about the increased level cap because it "makes them feel like they're growing". May I ask what about being infused, ascending, Weh No Su, Growing in Sunspear Ranks, etc did *not* give you satisfaction that your character was growing? Why do you feel the need to have a number express your strength, when, if you think about the story, your character has grown in so many ways you, with immature eyes, have overlooked. I'm a pen-and-paper roleplayer, and so many times you learn from experience and story elements, not those numbers on the page. If you cannot find satisfaction in the current system of growing, I hate to tell you this, but those numbers are going to leave you even more hollow inside.

No way in hell I'm getting GW 2. Why even get GW 2 If GW is still running. and if GW servers arn't going to be running, why get GW:EN?
Unless, The chars I play are my current chars grandchildren, and have everything they do right now transferred to them, and I get to start at level 20...

As a gamer, I think I sort of like the ability to get higher numbers, even if it only shows my investment, my time spent in the game. Now, surely it's true that someone may have lots of lower-level characters, and that player may have achieved more and know more about the game than a player with a single high-level character. It's not, in my opinion, anything like, "My level 50 is 'better' than your level 20." Or, "I'm all that because I was the first to reach Level X." I just sort of like that feeling of having been around for a while, or "veterancy." It sort of ties in with how much I like the Divine Aura, and the birthday presents, and the first year's Halloween items and with the fact they're only owned by those of us who were here, 'way back then. Each of those things seem to show a history, and for some, that's a very cool thing. |
Will levels be included in combat calculation? That's all that matters.
If they are shown in the same way as current XP bar, it doesn't matter.
If they are included in combat, and level 154 mob will hit your level 58 character for 57,213,427 damage just because of level difference, then it's grind based.
Otherwise it doesn't matter.
So, will it affect combat? Or be just a title?

If my huge poll was correct, 50% of the people will be upset at this. However i trust that ANet will put out such a kick-arse game that they will rethink there positions.
Thanks Gaile for clearing this up.

The level cap needs to be expanded but i think 100 is just pushing it. a lower cap say 35ish? would be nice

So Gaile, will froggie make it to GW2? =p

for Pve it doesn't matter much, pvp is what most people should be concerned with.

Most of you guys are over reacting with the level thing. The people who founded ANET are the people who developed Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft.
http://www.arenanet.com/team.php
I think these guys know what they are doing and even if there is the capability of leveling to level 100+ I doubt you would have to get there to beat the game based on past games they have made.

Not at all excited about GWEN, but GW 2...
One thing WoW really lacks is the ability to create max level PvP characters. If GW will turn into a "WoW clone" except keeping the 8-skill system and having an option for PvP chars, it will already be much, much better. No monthly fees (if they really manage to pull off a persistent world MMO without monthly fees) would be icing on the cake.
If you're keeping organized PvP, I have only one more criteria: balance, something you're failing miserably at right now. If you manage to balance the game second time around, giant thumbs up and you'll have every PvPer buy it and all the expansions. (While catering to the PvE market, you're overlooking that PvEers can play the game with one expansions or two, whereas for PvP players it's mandatory to have all of them)
Balance, balance, balance. If you can pull it off you'll have the best game on the market, but if GW 2 is balanced as well as GW 1 today, I don't think you'll have a PvP community... can't say much about PvE.

Interesting piece, and I thank Liquid Steel for sharing the information that a lot of us have been waiting for. I'm sure that some of this stuff will be answered when I actually get to read the article in April, or may have been posted already, but I was wondering if someone, or even Gaile, could answer a few of these. I'm not really going to touch on GW2 because, at this stage in the game, it's still all speculation with the exception of the highlights that have been posted.
1. I've seen it insinuated here that GW:EN is going to be the last 'expansion' of GW1. While I like the idea of not adding any more classes in lieu of focusing on what's already out there, is it indeed true that this is it - For +2 years, there will be nothing more than weekend and holiday events to look forward to in GW1?
2. Will there be an open BETA, or a world preview event for GW:EN? If so, is there an approximate timeframe as to when we could expect to see either occur?
3. When James Phinney says that there's going to be extended character development past lvl 20, could you expand on that a little bit? Are we talking about titles based on XP points, etc?
4. Because these catacombs supposedly extend all over the three main continents, will you need to have all three prior campaigns to play this expansion to its fullest?
5. This is a follow-up to #1, but because you're abandoning the Campaign-style format in favor of Expansions, does this mean we could expect to see skills for Faction characters, like Assassins and Rits, in Lion's Arch?
6. Anet now has three campaigns worth of experience to work from, and all the associated flames and kudos to prove it. Are there any specific problems or successes that C4 will address or build on?
7. In GW:EN, will we finally know where and why "Charr sez Rawr!"?
That's all that I can think of right now.
