I think you rushed to a conclusion to prove your point.
Look at the theme of what I'm comparing, rather than the actual items compared.
I could compare apples and oranges to war and peace. Apples, Oranges, War and Peace have no common similarity (out of context), but depending upon how I present it, the THEME does.
What I am saying is, one day either ANet is going to shut down the servers, you are going to grow tired of video games, or some other event to separate you from Guild Wars.
At that point, do you look at it as "I had fun" or "my characters are no longer playable" ?
I'm trying to keep my analogies to MMO elements (or video games at least), since when I go out of that range, it seems to draw confusion.
Halo 1. You play through, Master Chief destroys the ring world and kills the Flood/Covenant/Humans there. The story ends, you are victorious. If they did not make a Halo 2, would you say the time you invested in Halo 1 was pointless?
I think perhaps you are trying to say the items, gold, gear and titles you have invested in, would be "all for naught" in Guild Wars 2, as you would be starting fresh like everyone else (With that Monument thing withstanding...). In a way I can understand and share your sentiment, but at the same time, they are completely different games within the same "universe."
If you don't want to lose your character, continue to play it in GW1. If you want to experience a game for what it is, play GW2. It -is- a fully separate game.
I'm not trying to single you out for this, I'm just trying to say that the world is not ending because you are 'forced' to play new characters and are apparently unable to transfer your accumulated 'loot.'
