PC Gamer May 2007 Information - "Guild Wars Reborn"

Dudes if you read the statements about the level thing, let me point out that they said it could be level 100 or no level cap at all. This would suggest that levels don't matter that much at all. In fact this bit of information has got me really intrigued. I seriously think that they can do some really cool stuff with this no level thing.
I am hoping the best from the Anet team and frankly I have wasted so much money on bad games that I don't even know why I wouldn't mind spending another 50$ on GW2. I mean if I don't like I will just delete it from my computer and play AoC on Xbox360.
Also, AoC is planning to introduce a system in which you raid large cities held by other groups and EvE also has something like this based in space and galaxies of course.
Both these systems sound very very exciting and frankly even get me a hardened PvE player to try out PvP.
This plus Dx10 support=cool graphics plus no monthly fees is nothing short of an ideal combination for me.

A few questions that I, and I supect others, would like to see answered...
Will Guilds carry over? I somehow doubt this will be possible given that characters will not, but maybe it can, since "accounts" obviously will have some way to carry over given the whole "monument" concept.
Will the game still be based on the 8 skill model? I've grown so used to it, I can hardly imagine it being any different- even if I have often yearned for a 9th spot on my skillbar
Will there be inherent performance differences between the various playable races? I'm sure nothing specific has been nailed down yet, but is the plan for each race to be different in some way? Perhaps a trait for each race equivalent to the Primary Attribute of your primary profession?
Speaking of Professions... has anything been decided on this? How many and what? Will there still be the Primary/Secondary prof model?
And oh yeah, how do I get into the Beta?

About the level cap: I want an increase. I just ope they do it so you increase as the game goes on (through the story) so there isnt any grind. As for races, love it. I just hope they dont make the differences, if any, to big. As for large free span worlds, I like it, but I hope they have instanced worlds too. |
How many players do you think would buy burning crusaede if they couldn't transfer over their current WoW characters, no matter how good B.C is?

What we seeing here is the announced end of GWs as we know him nowadays. No transition expt from that monument thinggy that really needs lot of explaining.
What i c in GWs2 is a lot of improvement as far as PvE is concerned that now i c it as Pve/PvP (WoW and similar style). I c the idea of a balanced PvP system included also with balanced GvG (most successful thing in GWs)
So they are mixing up the best of WoW with the best of GWs with no monthly fee. Imo thats the mix that will make GWs the best game ever with the largest amount of players ever. It will b an icon in gaming industry.
Sad to c GWs Die... Looking forward to c a new GWs rising.
Note: I'm way more sad than looking forward.
2 years waiting with no new content...knowing that my chars, the ones i invested so much time, will die after GWEN. Honestly i think GWs will die for me in GWEN.

Well, from the looks of it I won't like GW2 as much as I liked the original Guild Wars...but we'll see. I'm willing to give it a try, since I trust Anet, and we'll see where it goes from there.
I would assume that since ArenaNet spoke about infinite levels, that the level number wouldn't increase your abilities after a certain point, but just be a measure of how much experience you have. For instance, say after level 20, no more power ups, but your "level" still increases to show you have more experience.
I'm curious about this Hall of Monuments...

I know my first character wont be there, but...its 100 YEARS after. Do you expect your character to be immortal? No. As what i have read, this game seems VERY fun. I will deffinitely buy it, and since it has the Anet and NCsoft logos on it, im sure ill be buying a good product. I see GW becoming a little more typical with GW2, but sometimes that can be better. We will just have to wait and see what product rises in 09/10. MY ONLY QUESTION: HOW DO I GET INTO BETA! xD

They're making a mistake by making it typical. I bought GW because it wasn't run of the mill. Lots of people did. Now it goes typical, so I might TRY it. Doubt it'll fly with me.

First just like to thank for the well organized 1st Post, and the the constant reply's of Gaile regarding some questions, nicely done
Now on to the news itself, regarding Eye of the north, it seems a good move from Anet, an expansion so ppl can enjoy and understand the story connecting both Guild Wars, get to know some of the new characters and simply enjoy the game.
On to GW2, well from the info that was advanced here, looks like a great game in perspective, will be looking with great interest on the next news of it.
Oh and the part of not being able to migrate characters from Guild Wars 1 is great, wouldn't buy the game otherwise.

So should i continue working on my drunkard/sweet tooth title? Or any other title? Why get so attached to chars that are going to go up on some guild hall wall that nobody will look at or care about?

I do not understand why people are complaining about something that they haven't even played. It just makes no sense. People jump to conclusions way too early. We don't know how they are going to level or how quickly.
And, why, why, why on God's Earth would you want your characters to transfer over? It's set 100's of years in the future. I will use a lot of my old characters names or even tweak them a bit (like having descendants). I love all my characters too, but it will be fun to start new ones again, just like it is when new professions come out. There are going to be different races to play as well. Give it a chance before you presume to gather the townsfolk and pitchfork and burn down the castle. Sign up for the beta test. See what you think then. Give input then. You cannot go by words alone. You haven't seen screens. You haven't seen graphics. You haven't moved a character around. You haven't done the first quest. Give it time and wait. Have some faith in it.

I really, really hope that you guys will go out of your way to find this magazine. Or try to find whichever one a local media partner is publishing about Guild Wars: Eye of the North or Guild Wars 2. Give it a thorough read. Read it from front to back. And then once again from back to front, if you wish. The point is, the article is stuffed with information of all kinds, and it's really difficult for anyone to provide all the details of so much content in forum posts or bullet-point lists. It really is worthwhile for you to find and read this article yourself! The magazine isn't expensive, and you get an in-game miniature if you buy one. If you don't choose to buy, or if you're located where a PC Gamer is not available, do keep in mind that many public libraries and some schools subscribe to major gaming magazines and you may be able to find a copy there. All in all, there will be much more information -- in many places -- over the next couple of months, as you can see on the Media Partners Page. Find it. Read it. We think you'll like it a lot. |

With GWEN, it is the closing of the current commercial guild wars story. You can't say it would never come. I myself thought it would continue longer, but I am more than pleased with the progress they have made, and more than understanding that creating more and more level 1-20 campaigns would become dry. For those of you who will not buy because of the lack of professions, what more can you really ask for? The massive bulk of skills in this game allows for a character to play any desirable role, and making a new prof. would be more work than we should ask for. The number of skills and armor is only mildly disappointing, but I trust that the rest of the expansion will more than make up for it. It is, in fact, only an expansion. If you think GW is going to die a sudden, tragic death, you are so wrong. It will remain one of the finest out there. Slowly people will some in to an excellent game with everything set up and ready to go, not worried about falling behind with the flow of campaigns. Guild Wars 2 not ick, which is about the only thing that has been said so far. You do not know yet the outcome of an infinite level cap. They will not make a level 420 stronger than a level 30. They may look cooler or have more skill points. Big deal. And for the love of God and all that is good in life, DO NOT COMPARE IT TO WOW!!! WoW is just another MMO on the market. In fact, their setup is so typical and unoriginal that it is considered the standard for an MMO. So what if GW is becoming more of one? I am more than positive that it will take all of the best parts of typical MMO's and all of the best parts of GW and make a game that will shake the market. I say great job Arenanet. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us. |
so what a-net is saying, i just wasted 20 months of my life!
This is one of the worst things that could have happened. I hope that it costs less than 40 dollars. because anything more than that would be a ripoff!
You have to now live with the fact that everything we do In GW1 is no longer going to be relavent.
The fact that we are working on our Highest Lightbringer title. IT doesn't say for certainty that we are going to be able to carry over this title..or anything else. It' just leaves us in the dark..........with even more questions and even more frustration.
I think that there is a great deal of problems with not being able to carry over the characters. Carry them over!

Is it just me or does this "fiery destroyer" that we have to fight in EoN with the help of the dwaves sound a LOT like the "great destroyer" mentioned in the Sorrow's Furnance quest, Unspeakable, Unknown.

If the seals that bind that book are dispelled and the true name spoken... well, let's just say there is no worse thing that could happen in this world.
I could use yer help gaining entry to Sorrow's Furnace and stopping the Summit from getting their hands on the Tome. Will you help me?"

Why bother breathing, or going through the harsh things that come with living, when you're going to die some day?
It's the JOURNEY, not the DESTINATION people.
All things end, have fun before they are over. I doubt they are taking the servers down when GW2 comes up. We'll have four areas with 10 professions. That's 40 replays, plus PVP, plus titles, plus...
I've got 10 characters, out of the possible "30 completions" possible, I've done maybe six, and I play steadily. There is so much to do in this game. A lack of expansions will not take that away.
Halo 1 ended, Halo 2 ended, Halo 3 will end. Doom ended, etc. Games end, don't abandon all hope because of a fact of life.
---
As to the level cap or any other information we were told about through a THIRD PARTY source.
Wait. And. See.
Do we know the change in levels suddenly puts a level 100 character in better 1v1 stance than a level 20? No. Do we know that attributes, health, and energy goes up with levels higher than 20? Nope. Not that I saw.
That's one of the things that annoyed me with GW using the arbitrary level "20". It should have just been listed as "100% completed."
That's all the number means, that you are ready for the high-end content. You are a "completed" character.
Wait. And. See.
And enjoy!

GW2: 180 degree turn from everything that made Guild Wars a great game, with extra rotten cheese on top.
I'm kind of glad I haven't felt like finishing Nightfall lately because of the insanely un-fun end game stuff in it. I'm already well on my way to stepping away from the franchise that is now a bigger smoldering pile of rubble than Ascalon.
I'm still waiting -- praying -- for the announcement that it's a giant, convoluted April Fool's joke. ArenaNet has completely turned away from the masses of Guild Wars players with this. They listened to the extremely loud, misguided, minority on various forums. They've already been discovered the problems with this by the difficulty of the game being well beyond that which most players can tolerate for enjoyment, and are fixing that with Hard Mode and a general non-hard-mode nerf.
We play Guild Wars for a reason. Lack of griefing (by instances); achievable-by-casual-play level cap, skill-over-time-spent (for most things), not needing to devote and schedule one's life to it (party limits reasonably small, and easily filled with heroes/henchmen), nice action-oriented gameplay without the hunter-gatherer resource gathering/crafting crap, versatility of characters and ease of having many of themto fit different moods and play styles depending on the day, etc. No stupid jumping/swimming nonsense... I'm glad I'm not the only one sick to my stomach reading this.
And all this after the wonderful announcement of Fun Mode/Hard Mode and GW:EN being an expansion instead of a campaign...
Too late. A.net has already shown they believe people to love titles and that they add to a game. Expect GWEN, if not GW2, to be all like title point grinding.

From what I can gather, as well as increasing the level cap, it seems they are making the character level almost irrelevant to actual effectiveness. If I had to guess, I would say that with Guild Wars they set out to make a game that fixed all the things they saw as wrong with the games of the time, but in doing so they feel they went too far in the other direction. They made a game that became almost clinical. It would seem that they want GW2 to sit somewhere in the middle. Keep the skill>grind/time axiom, but inject some depth that is intrinsic of other mmorpgs. Increase level cap, but reduce its overall importance. Keep the mechanism that feeds those with a psychological need for repetition (GW has never been able to adequately feed them) but make the entire system superficial. I hope they get it right. If they pull it off it could be huge.
I'm fascinated how people can so easily lose perspective to the point of "feeling sick" over this information. Over a subject we still know absolutely nothing about. Once we know the context and if the reality bears resemblance to these incredible overreactions, I'll be right there declaring my migration. Until then I'd like to maintain a measure of common sense.

Add me to the list of people who aren't overwhelmed by the press release. It seems like they are deliberately trying to alienate as many people as possible. I can't bring my old characters in? My only benefit is to see my minipets and my weapons? Thanks, but no thanks. If they keep the real Guild Wars servers up, I'll play till they turn them off. Other than that, I'm not going to play a WoW clone.

Just curious (and too lazy to find out for myself); is PC gamer sold in Canada, or at least Toronto? I don't want to walk into a store and end up looking like a complete idiot, if they don't even sell in Canada...

That's all the number means, that you are ready for the high-end content. You are a "completed" character. Wait. And. See. And enjoy! |
You simply do not understand effect of these characters on future decisions in mmo's.

/jump... hell ya. Found myself using that command quite often
I enjoyed GW1 and I have high hopes for GW2.
You have to remember, it is ~2 years from now, plenty of time to get Kind of a big Deal title. Just my 2 cents lol
