Well, the look alone is not what I would go on to choose a race. After reading that they will essentially be like goblins of the GW world, just the idea of playing a mischevious and condescending wise-ass that love tinkering with all things technological and magical, well I can't pass that up!

Take the Charr, for example. I already know what they look like, sure, but I don't necessarily like it. What I do like is the fact that they are savage, Mongol-esque monsters. That makes me want to play one.

Yes, when I say the Sylvari are "elf-like", I mean more in the whole "nature loving, magic race" deal.

The way they are described in PC Gamer is actually more "sprite" like: young, nature spirits uncorrupted by sorrow or hatred. They actually sound, personality wise, the exact opposite of Tolkien's immortal Elves and their long history of violence and sorrow. (anyone read the Silmarillion?)

Also, I went back and re-read the page under the races, where it talks about the homelands of each race in GW:EN.

There might be a mistake in the article: on page 30, the second to last paragraph, it says:

Quote:
Bordering the Maguuma Jungle, the Tarnished Coast is a wet, rainy region marked by overgrown rock outcroppings and huge waterfalls. It is haven for the underground-dwelling Asura...
Doesn't that sound more like the setting for a nature race, like the Sylvari? Maybe not, but I hope the Maguuma Jungle (one of my favorite areas of Guild Wars) will have something to do with the Sylvari.

Far too early for me to be even considering what races I'll be playing. Prob will give them all a try at some point.

I'm getting too excited...too soon.... I have no idea where I will be in two years...

I definitely think the new GW looks flippin sweet though.... I wonder how this will effect guild makups now...?

will guilds be composed of multiple different races?...since people probably wont have as many pve characters (100 levels..sheesh) they would have to be...

race discrimination? can you imagine char guilds...hehe pretty sweet.

Why not? If the Charr were misled by the Titans, then they could ally with Humans...

I think GW: EN will sow the seeds for reconciliation in Guild Wars 2.

After all, GW2 is 100 years later....

Plus, I really hate the idea of a "Horde" or "Alliance" group that forces people to pick certain races. If I want to play a "good" Charr, or an "evil" Silvari, that's my choice!

I kinda like the 'faction' idea...adds interest, and depth

not that only certain races are part of XX faction...but more like Lux vs. Kurz?

hmmm I wonder if the canthan factions will still be fighting 100 years later??

I hope they have dervishes in GW2, then I will have a Charr Dervish...PWN. and a Norn Ranger or Warrior would be nice, I get the feeling that Norns will have some strong racial traits if those are included.. one tending towards Warriors, and one towards Rangers atleast (Warriors, because they like physical prowess, Rangers, because of the concept art with t3h ub3r 1337 [email protected] xD)

No, it has not been confirmed. Like many others, I too hope that all 10 professions are available to all races.

I also hope that faction carries on, but that it can be chosen (non of this Alliance/Horde crap).

It also has not been ascertained whether or not any of GW2 will address issues we encountered in Cantha and Elona... I seem to recall the continual mention of Tyria, but I might be forgetting something here. I certainly hope that all three places (four, including the unknown North of GW:EN) branching all the campaigns (and expansion) of GW1 are further developed and explored in GW2.

Yup would be cool if all races have unique classes...
...wait on another tought that maybe isnt the greatest idea,if one race had cool class then gw2 would be swarm with that class...hmm...or maybe all same classes but different names for each race ...ugh someone slap me...

Since norn have ability to transform into bears I guess all races will have unique skills maybe?
And what about attributes? Will they be different for each class as gw1 or they will add same classic attributes for everyone (str,dex,int...etc) couse i think i remember magazine saying that Sylvari have some bonus to dexterity i think...

I hope that all 10 professions are available for each race. If this is the case, I expect that each race will have race-specific skills as well (i.e.: Norn -> Bear skills). Perhaps it could work like this: Race-specific skills, Primary Profession skills, Secondary Profession skills.

That is going to be a big deciding thing for me. If they are going to be just for looks and nothing else (which I really, really hope), then I might make 1 or 2 human characters, but I will mostly make non-humans.

Now if races do affect stats, quests, or other things.....

And please include Tengu, ArenaNet! I would love to be a tengu!

I wish it was April 3rd so I could get that magazine! I don't think I can wait a week....

Orr could be a really cool place to explore. I dunno if it'll just "come back up" I think everyone in Tyria assumed it destroyed and not transported to Torment. But that of course is an assumption. Also, the dead Orrians in Torment ask of news from Orr so perhaps it really is just plain and simple destroyed.

Humans are boring. I mean come on, you play as a human in real life!

...and I think we've all played that game long enough to be starting to get bored of playing as a human.

I'm going Charr or Norn, probably. (Charr for obvious reasons, Norn sounds like some sort of centaur or other cool bestial creature)

Asuras, no way! They may be the GW equivalent of gnomes, but unless actual ones are nicer-looking than the minipet, forget it.

Sylvarians sound like some kind of snooty elven race. Elves are just a bit too close to humans for me, also.

I think it would be interesting if each race could only play race-specific professions. The number of skills would skyrocket, though.

I think all races should get all classes.

However I think it would be cool and likely to have race specific skills. Maybe like 10 for each race to start off. Having only 1 or 2 skill slots for race specific skills would be cool too, kind of like elites only not as powerful, but unique.

No no no... Asuras are goblins! Little, nasty buggers. And they are the condescending, arrogant jerks, not the Sylvari. The Sylvari sound to be the opposite: Diligent, honest, innocent, pretty tree-huggers (well, because they are trees, or tree-people, rather). They are elves only in the sense that they are one with nature, dextrous, and elegant, but otherwise they're more like children.

I don't see myself playing a Sylvari, just because it really isn't my style. The Asura, on the other hand, oh yeah. I always liked goblins/gremlins, being annoying and hateful, but at the same time really intelligent and loving to tinker with things.

What I loved about GW was that, without races (and race-specific professions coughwowcough), I could create any profession to look however I want (with minimal limitation). I'd hate for the introduction of races to limit this aspect of character customization.

What? Since when? Each Primary class has [effectively] different models, different skins, and definately different armor looks. You've never been able to create a warrior that looks like a necro, or a monk that looks like a ranger. Ever. Just replace primary class-specific character looks with race-specific character looks, and there ya go.

All the characters are human. No matter what Profession you choose, you're human. I'm not talking about mixing profession-based skins.

I'm contrasting this to other MMO's where you cannot have a NightElf Paladin (WoW) or there's no point in creating a Galka Black Mage (FFXI). Using WoW's example, people who had no interest in Dwarves or Humans in WoW couldn't play a Paladin (until the expansion provided further option). In FFXI, female Galka and male Mithra simply do not exist.

If only Norn, Humans and Charr can be Warriors; those who don't like the look of Norn or Charr (and may be tired of Humans) are limited in what professions they can play.

Considering that I loved the diversity in GW character creation (combining two different professions in a multitude of ways) I would find it a large step backward if the development team decided to begin limiting its players in such a way.

Edit: On a second read, I can see where my wording was bad (please excuse an exhausting day). Please allow me to rephrase: What I loved about GW was that, without races (and race-specific professions coughwowcough), I could create any profession without concern of whether or not liked the race (since all were human).

And I find it restricting to not be able to change my primary class at all, and have limited armor options just because of my character's profession. This might not be an issue at all in GW2. Chances are you will be able to change your primary, but are stuck to what race you choose. You still get to choose it. You want a human? Pick a human. But guess what? You also have all the classes to choose from, and whatever armor and look/feel to your human character you want.

I see this as opening possibilities rather than closing them. Unless you feel the need to pick a Norn just for the bear-transforming ability. In that case, well you're stuck with a bulky Norn. But you don't need a bear-transforming ability.

Point is, humans will still be there, and they will likely have access to all classes, I don't see why not. I'm a fan of customization, and I feel GW2 will be even better in that respect. I'm looking forward to it.

I think pretty much all races will be able to be any classes.... look at the Charr enemies in ascalon for example - you've got Martyrs (monks), Ash Callers (Necros), etc

I do think that there will be racial bonuses though, and it will no doubt add a whole new aspect of gameplay to GW2.

this is already confirmed...bonuses/skills or whatever WILL be race specific. (IE Norns get melee bonus with their transformation abilities)

My only concern is whether or not the ability to make your character look unique will still be there... I dont want less facial/clothing/color choices...just because there are more races to model. I dont want a character clone like on WOW where all the humans look the same.

I'm looking forward to an Asura Monk, but it all depends on whether or not the 5 Anet has announced are all they're going to include at launch. At the very least, the two most obvious (as yet excluded) sentient races to add would be Tengu and Centaurs, not to mention the Deldrimor Dwarves.

Domino, Sylvari don't have pointed ears, sorry!

My Wants

More customization of characters, like Star Wars galaxies or City of Heroes.

Ability to play ANY race with ANY profession (I accept that fact that some races will be suited better to some Professions, but if I want to play an Asura Warrior, I should be able to!)

The ability to slightly change appearance later in the game, so we don't get bored with our 100+ level character. (Hair styles and tatoos for example).

Hopefully, with a whole new engine we will see some radical changes in character creation.
