I do find more minipets to be ridiculous though.. I already had more than one per character, and since you can only display one at a time the rest are useless to me.
#gwp is where the real PR's hang out. LuLu and Morello should replace Gaile.
Ice for that burn? You bet.
The minipet route is disappointing. It's an uncreative way of pleasing people. When minis first came out, there was a lot of "Wow!", but now it's just disappointing. Especially to the people who have been with Guild Wars, supporting this franchise, from the start. I can understand the guy whining about getting a Thorn Wolf feeling ripped off (although I also do agree that if you don't like it, at least make some ectos from it). It's a shame that ArenaNet chose to run with the minipet idea again, when I thought a lot of the other ideas being suggested were much more creative.
Gaile, you say that you couldn't find a conclusive answer from the suggestions. Did you try polling for the different suggestions? I think if you had, you may've found your solution. Hell, we, the fans, are doing the job for you. How slack is that?
Anyway, can't wait to get my minipet in a couple months. I don't have a lot of tolerance for the useless critters (sold my Kuunavang from my CE almost the first day of Factions), so hopefully prices won't have slipped too far.

I see birthday gifts as just something cool, a "hey, thank you for still playing!" attention. It really shouldn't be something people think they "deserve" or which Arenanet has any obligation of providing, let alone changing because people don't like what they get.

I feel quite disappointed for everyone who just got them. I will be buying at least one of these and coasting around with them, I've not been playing for 2 years so where's the justice I get something that says I've been here for 2 years when I've clearly not.
An emote would have been so much better, Although it would be slightly look at me I'm elite it would have been better than look at me I have gold to waste.

I like them. Apart from the elf.
I'm pleased to see more pets, mostly out of relief that Anet didn't listen to some of the frankly outrageous suggestions made in the various polls - overblown auras and emotes, clothes, disguises (eh?), speshul weapons that are named after your char and shoot lasers and rainbows... and all sorts of other things that had no place in the GW world, or sounded horribly overpowered, or difficult to program.
I can understand that some people didn't want them, but jeeeeez. Attitude much? If I was Gaile I'd be on the defensive too - 'professional detachment' or not.

The other problem with minipets that irks me is that all minipets are created equal, but some are more equal than others.
Even if I can sell my hideous Thorn Wolf, the value will be substantially less than the value of a mini Gwen or Lich.
All birthday minipets, if they were even remotely fair, would have had an equal chance of acquisition and the same colour of rarity tag.
As it stands, some people get "better" birthday presents than others, and those others are left feeling mistreated.
As stated, this is my opinion, and I'm happy for those who enjoy their minipets, but you aren't going to change my opinion.

I'm pretty dissappointed with the minis too. I like the Aatxe definitely and some of the other ones look nice too. I don't see why we couldn't get minis AND something else. With so few ways to distinguish yourself from the crowd in this game, having something that shows you are a 2 year veteran would be special. I envisioned some sort of in town aura or something, but any unique, untradable form of recognition would suffice. Heck, even a title would work and that could even track exactly how many days until we reach the next level.
Minis were a great idea for the first birthday. They are even a fun reward for events and HoH. However, a 2nd birthday is a lot more meaningful. We've been part of the Guild Wars experience for 2 entire years now. That's a long time for a game and it sucks that someone who just bought the game last week will be able to buy the same mini pet all of us veterans are earning. Call me ungrateful, but judging from the polls that were linked and the theme of this thread, the community wanted something else.

I would be far happier with the mini's as character based birthday gifts, if we also got an account based gift. I would love to see something similar to the Prophecies Collectors Divine Aura, but full body instead of hands, that could be turned on and off via /aura
ArenaNet, implement this, or something else similar, and I think a great many people would be happy, that otherwise hate the ideas of more miniatures (such as myself).
Edit-
I also hate the idea of gifts being character based only - many people, myself included, have accounts that are 2 years old (not including beta), but must wait several more months, at least, before a character will qualify for these gifts.

Hmmm mini's, not exactly the most original b-day present but it will do I suppose. I still have my 1st birthday to come, so no worries yet for my 2nd .__.
However, mini's would be so much better if you'd have a "weapon/armor slot" for mini's, that just makes the selected mini follow you around without having to double click each time you rezone ...
