While i really dont know why ecto prices are falling.... (less demand maybe) i do know that my stash of ectos is depreciating. Do i really care? No. I save em cause i need materials for obsidian armor, not as a way to carry more money.

The price of Ectos drops EVERYTIME a new expansion is announced by Anet people. Then people that where saving Ectos & shards decide to wait to see what the new armors will look like in the next game. It's not Bots, it's not loot scaling, it's not Anet nerfing the price, it's people deciding to wait & see. Watch, 2 or 3 months after Eyes of the North comes out, Ectos will be on the rise again.

More than likely the drop in ecto prices is a result of the loot scaling. It is, supposedly, 1/8 as effective to solo farm as it use to be so all of those uber farmers (and the people that ran bots on other accounts) now can't pull in enough cash through farming to keep them at the "standard of play" that they have become acustom to and now they need to start digging into their ecto stashes.
There was also the scare that loot scaling had affected the drop rates of ectos, ectos went up a bit then, but when Anet said that ectos would no longer be affected (and the anti farm code got taken out of normal mode) people maybe got scared that ectos were going to become more prevalent.
Lastly, they introduced UW passage scrolls so there are going to be more people going to the UW now than there was before (albeit probably not a huge number more); and whose to say more ectos aren't coming from other places?
I don't think there are going to be any new armors in GWEN that will use ectos, since there will be no new classes, so maybe people are realizing the time of the ecto has past and people really don't care too much to get FoW armor (the purpose for the existance of ecto).

I'd say Black Dyes, since they drop everywhere and no one can specifically farm them (save for a lot of farming in Pre or something), but then the prices would skyrocket.

It gets better: diamonds have no use yet and are expected to be heavilly in demand during eotn.
Monstrous Eyes are always 100g - 200g, meaning when you buy them at 100g you can always sell them at 100g. They have the greatest transfer price of all right now, and that makes for smart moneyholding.
Lockpicks are always in demand, and their price is trader-set.
"You can't corner gold" as they say. Never invest money into something JUST BECAUSE IT IS EXPENSIVE. That is where ectos and black dyes fail.

Ectos are a 4% drop rate and the cost to even start farming for them is 1k. I don't see ectos ever dropping below 3k. Still, going from 6k to 3k is a loss of 50% of your holdings.

If you have Proph, Factions and NF you have 8 characters slots. Once you've hit 1800k it might be time to consider spending some of that money instead of hoarding it. I mean, it wouldn't make much of a different if you have 1800k or 1800k and 2 stacks of ecto's, you're insanly rich in both cases.

that just the economy, prices rise and fall. when u but ectos it like buying a stock in a company. sometimes they will rise and u make money. other times they fall. i bet u wasent moaning when ur 8k ectos raise to 10k+ when the loot scale went a bit wrong.

So the market fluctuations in the NPCs to many of them are like OMG wow. OK finally I can clear some of this crap out cause its not really worth much anymore... Or I can equip some guildies, or whatever... The few I personally know are not worried one bit with the ecto drop, its just another thing they thankfully wasted some gold on... and can either hold on to, or use, or use as prizes...

I'm quite happy with this, I rarely farm in UW (since honestly it's one of the most boring places to me. I would rather farm minotaurs) except the occasional trapping group with my guildie so pretty much most of my ectos came from my ToPK runs

The way I see it is that a lot of the players who invested in ecto in order to hold over 1mil gold saw a small drop and became scared that the fall would continue, they were right, but it only happened because they sold them. People flooded the market and caused this because they were terrified it would happen, I imagine this is still occurring. People see the price continue to fall and sell because they dont want to lose more. If you really want to stop the price drop, stop selling them.
It could also be possible that someone with a slightly evil nature who had lots of money decided t slowly horde ectos over the past 2 years, and has chosen this time to hurt all the players that invested in ectos by flooding the market with his collection, perhaps he/she wouldnt really have needed to do that much, as soon as the price fell a little my previous theory kicks in.
To summarise, the drop is not directly Anets fault, it is a result of fear.

Ecto price does not concern me, why ? Because one ecto is still worth 6-7k, finding one does still make people happy.
Rare armor drops concern me, why ? Because almost all runes are not worth anything, finding one does not make people happy anymore. That means it will be sold to merchant like a white item.

Once again people are jumping the gun. Ecto prices have plummeted lower then this in the past and will (like before) rise again. I have doubts it will ever reach such heights as 14k or near that but it will increase eventually. I'm making an early prediction that shortly after the release of GW:EN, at latest a few months, the prices will shoot back up. People will have a panic moment that their characters must get FoW with all the fortunes they made at powerselling or good 'ole farming. Of course GWEN will offer new Armors but unless the materials are more difficult to obtain or the skins are better in appearance FoW armor isn't going anywhere.
The only real competition I'd see to FoW armor is if they deceided to open new god areas with at least one new Armor Crafter inside it. But again, the materials would have to be at least as difficult to obtain or perhaps even harder and the skins would have to be on par. Even still, FoW armor has always been known as "The" status symbol of the hardcore PvE player so it will have to take a lot to bring down such a coveted item.

The days that I worried about the economy in this game are long gone. Everything is rather cheap now. I enjoyed the market etc. the first 6 months when the game got released. Now ecto, gold and trade are just details to me and I wanne spend as less time as possible on those aspects of the game.

The reason why ecto went up after Factions and Nightfall is because of the simple fact that there were new professions to play who had their own Obs armor. As you know in GW:EN their wont be any new playable professions. So i doubt it, but i could be wrong.

I'll even go a step further in my prediction. I believe that if FoW armor is still as coveted after GW:EN then it may again drop in price do to Mini Expansions. There is far too large of a gap for Arenanet to not produce more content in between GWEN and GW2, so at least 1 or 2 Sorrows Furnace type expansions are likely. It is then highly probable to say that Arenanet will make at least one more final set of armor for the Guild Wars professions... these set(s) in turn, will make the price in Ectos and Shards drop at the lowest levels we can imagine. At that point i'd expect them to stay there. But hey, that's just my opinion ;p.

Nope. It's not concerning me. Il'l just go happily on Vanquishing some more area's. Meanwhile people are complaining about the 1,000k cap on storage, people leaving GW because of recent balancing issues, people whining because their stack of 500+ ecto suddenly became worthless... After 2 years, I'm still enjoying GW. Do you really expect I'd give a d*mn about those ecto prices?

Ecto's have been overrated for a long time. Take a look at the basic merchant price which is 100g. This puts ecto's in the line with shards, amber and jadeite. For a long time they have been prieced above the rarest mateials like Diamonds, Rubies and Sapphires. These are 'worth' 250g which at least indicates they are considerably more rare than ecto's.
But like others said, it's like stock prices, they rise and fall with supply and demand and panic can cause havoc.
Changes in the game always influence prices, like the trade contracts have lowered the rare gem prices for a long time. Now everyone played through Nightfall and redeemed their trade contracts, the gems are slowly returning to their old prices again.
I traded all my ecto's for DoA gemstones just after the hard mode update, but the gemstones have been dropping in prices as well.

I don't understand why, and why nothing is being done about it. I cannot say for certain that A-Net isnt doing anything about it, i really hope they are. If they are doing something about it it would be a good idea to let people know about it sooner than later as well. The sooner they say they are going to work on a fix the better because that will restore some "investor confidence" in the Ectoplasm market. And believe it or not, it does effect everyone in the game. Don't make fools of yourselves saying that people don't need over 1million gold. Noone needs to play the game at all really but they do. The rich/hardcore player plays a major part in making the economy viable and accessible to the casual/poor player. Rich players buy from poorer players. If the rich players are all waiting for the economy to stabilize and their financial backing to become secure thats less money trickling from top to bottom. And that steady flow of gold downwards is what allows the casual player to afford his +30 hp mod or 1.5k Chestpiece. The very things that allow the casual player to keep up with the hardcore player. In short people need to realize that this is a real problem. Maybe you didn't have money in ectos. Maybe you've never seen 100k much less 1000k. It doesn't matter cause the people who have are part of the same system that lets you get on for an hour every few days and play the game and have fun doing it. So after that nice long vent(had to cover my bum in every direction possible to keep flames away from this real point at the end).. I'm just as concerned as the original poster. And I'm asking A-Net: Are you going to do something about this? |
1) Guild Wars is not the stock market. Some people are missing the point of loot scaling completely. The reason why there's so much money and high prices is because of bots, and some people, flooding the game with gold. Loot scaling came to adjust that to what Anet thinks the game should be, more accessible to everyone. It's not about casual players being able to get the same as high end items by getting colector's, it's about casual players knowing that they can invest some time to get high end items rather than investing ALL their time for that to be possible.
2) You sound like a corporation. And I suggest you watch the movie Corporation. "This is a real problem"? "The rich make the poor happy from buying from them". You are the ones creating this problem and sustaining it as a problem by considering rich = better. Much like in real world, as yourself has stated, there is a few people influencing the game (economy) and affecting EVERYONE, which really means that they are making sure that "poor" players stay "poor" since these few people make it their living to just gather and gather wealth for no reason other than gathering it. Much like real world YOU are a problem, we don't NEED "rich" people/players dictating the economy or the norm, YOU are the ones making sure everyone else stays "poor" for the sake of your egos and let the masses pay the cost. Get real people...
