PayPal Poll
Gaile Gray
Hi, there,
I have been speaking with our Billing Department about our online stores: The Guild Wars Official (in-game) Store and the PlayNC store. I've been asking lots of team members about PayPal, and they've given me a list of reasons why we do not currently accept it, including higher costs, higher risk of fraud (chargebacks and so forth) and, most of all, the fact that the vast majority of those who use PayPal have a credit card and therefore could use that to make a purchase.
Please help me with this survey, but please answer honestly, so that it has some value in the discussion. It's really important that if I turn over poll results, we don't find out that the statistics are wildly different than what the poll offers. (If that happens, my ability to ask for things on your behalf will be damaged. "Yeah, that's Gaile, remember she told us people wanted PayPal and that was a lot of hooey?"
Give me your answer and comments, as well, please. Thanks so much for helping.

Paypal takes more money when you sell anything. It would require you to upcharge. Feh.
Why have a middleman when Paypal requires a credit card anyway?
You might as well take checks or TTs.

i have a paypall account i use once in a while to buy games on ebay when i find them cheap; the debit card i use for my paypal account is the same one i use on the gw online store.
So... nope, no difference whatsoever for me using paypal or not. i probably would keep using my debit card to buy gw:en from the gwstore
furthermore, the main point of me buying from the gw store rather then from a retailer is to let a.net have a bigger share of the revenues. if paypall takes even just 1$ away from a.net, that's not the best option for me

I have never used paypal.
Is there actually a poll? Or do we just make comments?

I have no idea why I would use paypal when you guys accept my credit card. Paypal is for individuals without the ability to process credit transactions, not major businesses.
=DNC=Trucker
I like using paypal for online/gaming stuff. It keeps my budget in line and my online activities separate (i.e. keeps GW out of my real life credit cards). I do have a CC that I have used to purchase 2 extra slots in the past, though.

Explain (I posted I would not use paypal).
I often use paypal, but in this case I would not use paypal because I would rather see ANET get the cash instead of paypal siphoning off fees from my credit card usage. I would expect most paypal users have credit card as well.
Keep the coins instead of giving it to the middleman paypal for usage fees.

I have a credit card and a PayPal account. I use PayPal exclusively on E-bay (where I wouldn't want the sellers to know my CC #) and any other online location where I feel there may be an issue with damaged goods or potential fraud.
For reputable stores (Amazon, BestBuy.com, etc), I have no problems giving my credit card number. There is just as much chance of my # being stolen by the cashier at Walmart as by a hacker. I have no problems using my credit card in the online store and would use it over Paypal.
I appreciate the fact that you are trying to take steps to help those of us who have been vocal (yeah, that's an understatement!!!) regarding the new mission pack.
I hope you will make an option available for folks like me that plan to buy GW:EN in a local retail store. The only reason is that I want an actual manual and the physical cds. Please give us an option to get the mission pack. I wouldn't mind paying extra for the pack in the online store or buying other items from the store. Do you know if there will be other items available before November? (Coffee mugs, mousepads, T-Shirts, etc?)

"No, I would not use PayPal. (Please explain)."
I have to say I don't trust them. I've done some small transactions through them when there have not been any other alternatives, but I'm much more comfortable using Visa.

I have a Canadian debit card attached with my Paypal.
My debit card does not work with the GW store as it does not have the Visa/Master Card Logo on it. I do NOT have a credit card.
Please implement paypal for us folks up in Canada =D

I would find it simpler to use my credit/debit card, and I would think that most gamers of an age to be spending money through paypal would be old enough to have one.
If it comes down to security, I would suppose it would be up to the consumer which they thought was more secure, paypal or the store. Certainly cutting out the middle man keeps the info changing hands down to a minimum.
Off topic: To all the complainers from a bit back talking about customer service and whatnot: . As I recall there were only a couple replies to the bonus mission threads which mentioned wanting paypal. Thank you for finding them and addressing their concerns Gaile.
But that's just my two cents

I've used Paypal for plenty of things and there's nothing wrong with using it. You guys are all paranoid if you don't trust PayPal.
There is no PayPal fees involved with making payments. It's 100% free. You only pay fees when receiving money. You can even transfer money back to your bank account for free.
If PlayNC starts accepting Paypal will there be more charges involved? Since there is a fee for accepting payments?

No big difference between Paypal and a credit card, I wouldn't use either.
But here's an idea that would make everyone happy imho. WoW has these Game time coupons you can buy at retail stores, which equal a monthly subscription. GW could have something similar, where you buy a coupon at a retail store worth say, 30 bucks, which you could use to buy something from the online store for the same price. One way how it could work is that you add a key to your account, which would give you the bought amount of credits which you can spend. This would probably require Anet to add more things to the store to make it worth it, but I believe that is what they plan to do anyways.

Paypal may cost more, but given that it can (not necessarily should) be linked directly to a bank account, it would allow people who don't have a credit card to use the store. Remember only US debit cards work like Visa or Mastercard, up here in Canada, debit works differently. As a side note, I just recently moved back to Canada after 3 years in the US and one Christmas while down there, I was trying to get my sister a gift from a Canadian retailer so I could avoid shipping charges across the border, etc. Pull out the handy US debit card which is supposed to be accepted everywhere Visa is, try to make purchase and have things go boom, retailer can't accept debit over the internet I could have gone into the store and used the card just like a visa, but over the net, the validation was coming up debit and the system didn't know how to handle those. Paypal, or some other method of accepting payment without a credit card is a good idea for everyone who ISN'T american

Don't have a PayPal acc myself as so far I never had the need for it. Never bought from eBay or similar and not really looking forward to.
Also I don't mind using my card for the online store as if you fraud me I know your address .

Not a huge fan of paypals. But I have used it in the past and would use it if I had too. The only time I find it helpful is Buying/selling on ebay. I prefer the direct payment option you have now.

Just make those work for GW and most people would be happy...

And Gaile, the "would not use paypal" should be split into "have a card, would not use" and "don't have a card, would not use". Give you a better idea of who simply are not going to purchase at all, over those who prefer to use a card.
mr_groovy
Don't have a cc, and i think i can speak for most people in holland. Paypal would be the way to go for me. So /signed for using paypal. (Or any other form of online credit which doesn't require you to get, and pay for a cc. Here in holland also ideal is used.).
ElinoraNeSangre
I voted that I would not use PayPal; PayPal can be awesome but I have a Visa/debit card that pulls right from where mah money is anyway, so there's not really any point to use anything else for me personally.

Since my post in that big thread was either overlooked or ignored, I'm going to ask here as well. First of all I'd use paypal, it's convenient.
More importantly, however... Why do I have to pay in British Pounds? It's not fair for Australians that most of our copies came from EU, so we have to pay EU prices... We're on the other side of the world.
Why can't we pay in American Dollars? The currency conversion to Pounds is terrible and we'd end up paying $10 more though the online store than if we just picked it up from our local EB. I don't want to pay more online and get less (no box).
We're not Poms! Please give us the option of paying in American or Australian Dollars! Oh, and my support ticket garnered a typical lame response.

@Gaile: as you can see the poll results are already based on wrong information and thus is nothing you should base your decisions on

Unless its someones only way to purchase, I fail to see the advantage of it. I only use Pay Pal if it is the only option....almost never.

Paypal doesn't need a credit card to use the account. Any bank account will work.

Paypal doesnt need a CC, it only needs a line of credit
Paypal would also help people living in Alaska or other places, where the GW Store has a hard time processing CC transactions.

hehehehehe, so many people saying no to using paypal

I do not have a CC, I have not used paypal in the past, but i would for this purchase.
If it was an easy thing to do I would do it but I would much rather use a pre-paid CC.

I'm most mistrustful of the internet when it comes to money, so I don't use PayPal or a credit card on it.
However, I am beginning to see that I'll need a way of paying for things on the net, and I'm considering paypal as one option.

I use paypal everytime i can on internet for security - fast payment, but this threath is funny
just add the choise PAYPAL- VISA- OR OTHER PAYMENT METHOD on purchase payment like most of the sites use, so everybody will be happy and use what they prefer

Yes I have a debit card (like a credit card and IS recognised for online banking) I have bought many items online with my debit card to the sum of $1500ish AUD and it has always been accepted. It's quick, hassle free and works.
I do not have a paypal account nor wish to use one as all the screwing around it involves to set one up etc and I do not feel comfortable dealing with online purchases via a middleman when my debit card works fine.
I have bought products from the GW store and will continue to buy them with my debit card. Not paypal.

But judging by extra missions debacle anet just want to make things difficult and squeeze out a few dollars more profit.
Maybe they're charging you $10 extra for all the extra electrons it takes to push a serial code to your account in the UK?
ObiWan07
Just as a hint, with a credit card you always use a middleman too.
Glider of chaos
k, here goes my explanation.
I voted for "Yes. I DO NOT have a credit card, I HAVE NEVER USED PayPal, but I WOULD use it for this purpose." but on a second thought that's not really accurate. It depends on few things actually:
1. whether I will be able to put money on a paypal account without a credit card (via banl transaction or a buddy with cc)
2. whether it will be easy to make a payment via guild wars online store

Ideal is one of most simple ways of paying online (at least, for us )
And well... paypal is nice too, but we really hate creditcards over here
