Norn Tournament Builds, Tips, Questions [Merged]

Right, I get through 99% of the fights before Magni without a hitch. That 1% would be Devona if she gets in my face before I can get her low enough to trigger her Healing Signet spam.
And this is with only a barely modified build from my standard PvE setup. I've made a couple changes but don't want to dropkick the whole build if I can help it. Reading through the post I'm seeming on the right track, but I can't seem to seal the deal.
Ranger
Expertise 10 + 2
Wilderness Survival 8 + 3 + 1
Marksmanship 11
Beast Mastery 6
1: Power Shot > Point Blank Shot - Power Shot was what I used first few times; PBS, most opponents are in my face anyway, so I'll take the extra bump in damage.
2: Savage Shot - This needs no explanation; I use a Longbow so it interrupts EVERYONE setting up forms.
3: Kindle Arrows > Dust Trap - This is mostly open; I had Kindle Arrows for beating on Warriors but decided to throw together a bow with a Shocking String to free the slot. Dust Trap works slightly better off if I can get it off.
4: Troll Unugent - Yeah, for those spikers who almost kill me right away. (Cynn, I'm looking at you.) This keeps me on my feet.
5: Melandru's Arrows <-> Incendiary Arrows - Well Melandru's Arrows shuts the door on Mhenlo REAL fast with the nice bonus to damage. Incendiary Arrows do too but they are gone rather fast. Looking for a good alternative, might put Burning Arrow in there or Apply Poison.
6: Comfort Animal > Otyugh's Cry - I started with Comfort to keep my pet wolf up but I could never heal enough to prevent Warriors from taking it out. So I swapped to Otyugh's Cry . . . it works decently.
7: Charm Animal - I use a pet. So THIS would be in there.
8: Never Rampage Alone - After comparing vs. Call of Haste, I decided twice the haste is worth it. Plus Health Regen.
=====
So, as I said. NEARLY anyone I take down without a problem. Mhenlo usually folds like he's playing poker. Kahmu and Melonni never get going bad enough to beat me (come close though). I run into a couple problems on occassion.
- Devona kills me if she knocks me down and prevents me from dealing enough damage. She ALWAYS ignores the pet, which is funny. Nobody else does.
- Lukas NEVER NEVER NEVER pays attention to the pet wolf. Sticks to me like glue.
- Dannika (Kurzik lady with those two pets) beats me hard. Well, her pets do and I can't kill them before she can heal.
- Cynn is a bit of a coin flip, because sometimes I just can't seem to overcome Aura of Restoration.
- Magni eats me for lunch. With ale on the side. This build is good for most things but Warriors always give me trouble. They do too much damage sometimes for me to stay active. Magni does UNGODLY damage somehow, even outside of Bear Form. (140 from Irresistable Blow. 1-4-0 . . . what the heck?!) I can't ever seem to get anything to stick on him (Blind, Poison, Bleeding) long enough to make a dent. My wolf dies in one shot, every time. (140 to me yes, for some reason over 300 to the wolf!)
I'm getting tired of dropping money on this and don't want to cheap my way through on a Ritualist secondary (fully prepared with skills to do it though). I want to beat him fairly, but that ungodly chunk he takes out of my health in short order just . . . kills me. Literally.
Advice?

Vital boon and signet of pious light are the big heals. This doesn't work too well on Mhenlo and Gwen can be troublesome, but beatable. I also found Danika pretty troublesome as well.

Vvarden Ok Raden
I took Ursan Blessing, Throw Dirt, Sig of Str, I am the Strongest, and Pain Inverter... this was on my warrior.

I Went through the whole thing 5 times in a row and died to Old Mac, i never faced Mhenlo, You can Swap Flame Djins Haste for Convert Hexes (not needed w/ prot spirit you can cast through Backfire) or inferno, that would make the build Prophecies only compatible.
[skill]Immolate[/skill][skill]Flame Burst[/skill][skill]Lava Font[/skill][skill]Flame Djinn's Haste[/skill][skill]Protective Spirit[/skill][skill]Aura of Restoration[/skill][skill]Fire Attunement[/skill][skill]Elemental Attunement[/skill]
OgNDoMrPO/ihBvosWPoF4CSB
FDH just in case i screwed up and had to run and spam something to regain some health.
Dual attunement keeps your energy up, Aura of Restoration + Costly spamable spells keep you alive, Prot Spirit makes bison 254 crits survivable, the rest is spammable damage w/ high cost.
I did this w/ my regular equip , w/ 580 hp i wouldnt advice going 55 becouse:
-Some Enemys stack Degen wich can be fatal to 55.
-Some Enemys Remove Enchantments, Prot Spirit Work as Cover on those occations.
-Interrupt will completly screw you if it hit prot spirit.
Reducing your hp to 150-200 might be a good idea but its not nescessary. GL

Does someone knows if Pain invertor+signet of midnight work?
Cause signet of midnight causes melee targets to miss.

i had a tough time with this, as i am horrible at kiting. i used this on my mesmer with no problems:
[skill]Empathy[/skill][skill]Ether Feast[/skill][skill]Backfire[/skill][skill]Signet Of Midnight[/skill][skill]Ebon Vanguard Assasin Support[/skill][skill]"Finish Him!"[/skill][skill]"You Move Like A Dwarf!"[/skill][skill]Ether Signet[/skill]
i used basically the same build on my ranger:

the only person i had a tough time with was alesia, took maybe 3 minutes to kill her.

Why Eremite's Attack? It only deals a bonus if you have multiple targets adjacent... except for the two pets, when does this help?
Some possible subs:

What I am wondering is WHY these henches do not fight like that in the game? If they did I could just H/H through all the campaigns without actually trying to kill anything myself.
I find a few of them difficult to beat. I tried the /Rt build and 2 problems with it:
- The gate closes behind you so you cant cast spirits inside.
- A melee character like a Warrior have energy problems in casting those spirits and hexes.

Pick Me
I can now honestly post my builds, as I have finally beaten M. Bison.
Me/Mo: Domination: 12, Inspiration Magic: 12, Fast Casting: 3 (add runes and helm)
Backfire, Empathy, Signet of Midnight, Spirit of Failure, Ether Feast, Cry of Agony, Ignorance, Summon Mursaat.
Killed: Koss, Argo, Norgu, Gwen, M. Bison. Only M. Bison made me sweat a little (the only guy to bring me down to half my health).
No kiting, no running (except for dodging Stone Daggers).
I'm still experimenting with my Warrior, as I have to get armor (I think his armor looks pathetic now, and the runes placed on it are horrible). But I got to M. Bilson with almost no problems (Lukas brought me down to 5 health before I beat him, then I died by bleeding).
Crippling Slash, Dolyak Signet, Riposite, Deadly Riposite, Gash, Knee Cutter, Healing Signet, You Move Like A Dwarf
This is what I used to face M. Bison (brought him down to half health). With no runes for weapons (I think that was one of my reasons for my downfall) I will use this build or replace Deadly Riposite with Apply Poison.

Well, for any class, Sneak Attack makes Bison hit nothing the entire fight.

Can't get Magni past the last 1/4-1/3 of his HP... Tried 5 spirits + Mighty was Vorizun (Need the energy 'cause i'm a ranger) and Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support (Which i don't have to use on anyone except the Bison, and which does exactly nothing TO the Bison)... I have an available Elite skill spot to swap instead of EVAS... Anyone got suggestions on what it should be? I'm thinking of Trying Ursan next, but I really aint that tough with R2/R3 Norn.

Does Asuran Scan affect spirits you control? Because:
Signet if Illusions + Asuran Scan on Magni (Rank doesn't matter, that's what SoI is for) combined with the spirit spam build = around 2x the normal damage spirits do in the same amount of time.

1) Cast in the doorway. Spirits animation will allow them to fire through the door.
2) Radient insignia/insightful staff are your friends. 45 energy is plenty. Just be sure to cast spirits in order from longest living to shortest (IIRC: Pain, Wanderlust, Bloodsong, Agony, Shadowsong).

[build prof=p/w name="norn para build" spear=11+1+2 leadership=11+1 command=8+1 box][blazing spear][spear of redemption][coward][awe][you move like a dwarf][there's nothing to fear][go for the eyes][drunken master][/build]
For a weapon, I used a 20/20, +5 energy, +30 health spear. For a shield, just a generic q9, +30 shield is fine.
The idea with this build is to keep moving! [Drunken master] will increase your attack speed and movement at once, so if you keep your foe crippled via [you move like a dwarf] they won't be able to catch up.
As soon as you start, fire off Drunken Master.
If you're facing a physical damage foe, fire off [you move like a dwarf] and start chucking spears. Keep moving and using [coward] and [you move like a dwarf] as they recharge. Use [go for the eyes] when you need the energy and the spear attacks for extra damage. If they get to close, use [there's nothing to fear] to negate some of the damage.
If you're facing a caster foe, fire off [you move like a dwarf] followed by [awe]. Just keep attacking and they shouldn't get a spell off from being dazed. Alternate between the two to keep Dazed up. Casters are going to be harder to kite, but the Dazing should be on long enough to cycle through the combo again.
For Magni, just treat him like a physical foe, but be extra careful! Stop only to attack once or twice and then move. Use your knockdowns and keep him Crippled and you should be good (be careful about him using [Purge Signet]-if he uses it don't stop moving until [you move like a dwarf] recharges and you can Cripple him again).
Hope this helps!

I used this on my warrior:
[build prof=W/R][Auspicious parry][Riposte][Deadly Riposte][Gash][Savage Slash][Troll Unguent][Healing Signet][Poison Tip Signet][/build]
Adjust your stats as you feel apropriate in Tactics, Swordsm., and Wilderness.
Against melee opponents:
just spam [Auspicious Parry] [Riposte] and [Deadly Riposte],
apply poison if you feel necessary.
Against rangers:
Spam Parry.
Only use your heals right after you activate parry, or you might get interrupted. Poison, and interrupt [Troll Unguent].
Against casters:
Try to interrupt heals or key skills with savage slash.
elementalists - survive with your heals until they start to run out of energy, then you can kill them with poison. Interrupt [glimmering mark] or other big damage spells, or attunements. You can also kill Argo with this build.
illusion mesmers: you will have a very hard time against them, but you can survive with patience (I've managed). Keep them poisoned, and yourself healed with troll.
Bison:
No use poisoning him, just spam your parry and riposte skills for an easy win.
Heal if necessary.
Danika:
She won't be able to kill you, you won't be able to kill her. (just die and restart, you got bad luck)
(There might be a few opponents I haven't tested this build against)

Voodoo Rage
I got my 5 bison tokens to get my crown (ugliest thing ever on a female character btw...). The rit spam build was very effective. Be careful to not let characters fully aggro on your spirits because some AoE spells can take them out even through the door. The trick with Bison is to not cast painful bond until you see him use his hex purge spell. I didn't have to bother recasting spirits, they took him out just fine (I use Bloodsong, Pain, Vampirism, Wanderlust, Anguish, Shadowsong cast in that order). I keep You Move Like a Dwarf handy mainly to interrupt the rit spammer if he happens to spawn.

[vampirism][bloodsong][pain][shadowsong][dissonance][painful bond][reversal of fortune][protective spirit]
Protection 8 + 2
Communing 11
Channeling 11
Summon Vampirism, Bloodsong, Pain, Shadowsong and Dissonance. Then target your opponent with painful bond. Cast Protective Spirit, and Reversal of Fortune when necessary. What I find is that if you have enough practice, you would know when to and not to cast rof to save energy
This build worked very well for me, only challenge is when facing Alesia - if Healing Hands did not get interrupted, that may be a problem, other than that, it kills everyone else pretty quickly.
For Razah the spirit spammer, as suggested in earlier posts, use a longbow to pull him.
And make sure Magni attacks you and not the spirits (keep protection spirit and rof on yourself), - the spirits will kill him - do remember to cast a 2nd painful bond on him to quicken his death.
And as mentioned earlier, opponents with AOE spells, (e.g. Little Thorne), ensure they cast the spell away from the spirits!

Used this on my mesmer because I was too cheap to buy myself a bunch of spirits!

KILL MAGNI WITH AIR ELEMENTALIST - FIRST ROUND MATCHES
Spent around 2k trying to do this with me Ele, as many Ele builds used skills I could get, then came up with this build. I got hit 1 time by Magni, due to not moving quickly enough. Only one hit from him.
Max your Air Magic and Energy Storage. I had rank 5 Norn rank.
[Windborne Speed][Lightning Orb][Lightning Hammer][Enervating Charge][Blinding Flash]["You Move Like A Dwarf"][Elemental Attunement][Air Attunement]
Defeat players leading up to Magni as follows:
Equip Elemental Attunement, followed by Air Attunement at the very start. (As the countdown is ticking)
Then move out to engage combat, using the condition spells to inflict weakness and blinding on Rangers and Warriors etc. Then spam your Orbs and Hammers at the enemy. When they are below 50% health, expect a self heal, so quickly use You Move Like A Dwarf. With no casting time, you have no excuse not to interrupt their self heals. Finish blasting them with your powerful Air spells.
Magni The Bison
I tried tons of ways to kill him, Earth magic, Fire, but found he could always get to me and deal more damage faster. Until I used Windborne Speed, combined with You Move Like A Dwarf.
What you need to do:
Equip dual attunements at the start, the same as you've been doing in the tournament, followed by Windborne Speed right after. (So you have a speedboost to charge at Magni)
Then when the gate opens, run at Magni and use You Move Like A Dwarf on his 'Bear Form.' With no casting time, you should be able to interrupt it near the end of its casting. That stops him getting an extra 250 health!
He is then crippled, so blast him a few times with your powerful air spells, remembering to keep up Windborne speed to not let him get close. If he uses purge signet, keep on the move until you can use You Move Like A Dwarf again. The You Move Like A Dwarf skill recharges very frequently, so you can keep his movement in check. Plus moving far away under the effects of the speed boost, makes him walk back to his side of the arena.
You need to also make sure that you have both attunements up during the entire fight, so that you are fine with energy. Running out would not be a wise choice!
Keep blasting him with the Orb and Hammer spells, whilst he is crippled from the Norn skill, remembering to always run away with Windborne Speed. He won't get close to you, and you can watch his health drop and drop. I never had to weaken him or blind him, but those are there for scary moments. We don't like scary moments!
Eventually, the combo of ["You Move Like A Dwarf"] + [Windborne Speed] keeping you one step ahead of him...
...plus blasting him with [Lightning Orb] + [Lightning Hammer] as he tries to get close to you, will make you victorious!
Took me a while, but I found a build that worked. I stupidly let him get too close one time when the camera angle was pointing the other way, not allowing me to see how close he was as I cast Windborne Speed. I took one hit, but beat him easily enough.
I hope you Eles can too!

Magikarp
Auspicious Incantation
Conjure Nightmare
Vampirism
CoP
Phantom Pain
Signet of Midnight
Arcane Echo
Ebon Vanguard Assassin
This was pre SoM nerf, but it should still work fine seeing as you really only need it a lot for Magini. I've used this build for a really long time, and its almost never lost to any of the characters in the arena. echo the sin after you lay on nightmare and pain, then CoP any self heals or just to deal damage. SoM melee, and you're golden.
specifically for Bision, simply CoP bear form, Ausp, Nightmare, (wait for purge), SoM, echo sin, Pain, CoP the purge, and he's dead.

the best elite imo to kill magni is [grenth's balance]. and since it is unlinked you can use Any/Nec and put your favorite primary skills with it.
I actually used blood + energy storage ( ele primary ), put [life siphon] on him and spam [necrosis] and ymld. he hit me twice and that was enough to balance things between us...

My character is a Warrior, and I cannot beat the tournament no matter what i try. I was wondering if anyone could post a build for me, preferably w/mo or w/p as i have the most skills for them.

On my warrior, I used the W/N Grenth's Balance/Reposte/Deadly Repost build posted in the thread Nightstalker linked to. Took a while to get the feel for it, but it worked.

Try and get some of the pve skills, they'll probably help. Finish Him is great, but I think that may come from the end of that quest.... ummm asuran scan definately is good, summoning skills, you move like a dwarf. General shock axe build should probably get you most of the way through. Against magni, you move like a dwarf + kiting is a good idea.

Well try going W/N with:
Eviscerate, distracting strike, executioners strike, flail, enraging charge, Vamp gaze (if you come against the 55 Monk) and an optional one. Don't try to interupt magni, just run around him with enraging charge until his bear form is off, then slap him with regular attack skills, maybe take Lion's comfort as optional.
