so has anyone else noticed how many unused necro skill icons there are?
It looked to be about a 1/3 of them in the image type with most of the skills in it.

But why would GW2 content go into the GW1 codebase? That makes no sense at all.

Textures are unfolded. So just like animals are flat textures (but distorted), the emotes would be such as well.

Also, given Anet's sense of humor (Tenagg, the pug, and similar), I wouldn't be surprised if next patch contained some "interesting" additions.

That's what I mean, the texture would be a "skin" not the 2D spell animations that people have been posting. It isn't necessarily going to look at first glance like an emote (see the above skins of things like ranger boots etc).

I just read the whole thread and I'm not going to go back and quote posts, but the events sound like they're streaming stuff into our .dat files for the GW2 beta. One event had a trading post; maybe the Zaishen Market is going to be in GW2 and will be tested in the GW2 beta, hence the "Thank you for testing this feature!" thing?

Eh, maybe its just wishful thinking.

I am quite sure it would be ridiculous to develop a game on a new engine on an old engines .dat file...

Where is the logic in developing GW2 on a GW1 .dat file?

I was suggesting that they might use the GW1 client for the GW2 >>Beta<< and that they've already begun streaming things onto our hard drives, much like GW:EN was streamed about a month before the sneak preview.

I would say the likelihood of them using gw1 engine for gw2 is about as likely as ANET giving us all 10 stacks of armbraces to make up for the duping fiasco.

GW2 will be on an entirely different engine. It will allow jumping, swimming, sliding, persistent worlds. Making it possible for any of this to run on the GW1 client would take a lot of time and effort - too much to be worth it.

Anyways, here are some of my finds.

Looks like chests and some random items. I know of no chests in GW that look anything like these, though.

Some bizarre insignia. Or a shield I've never seen before. I don't know, I'm not big on Warriors.

I guess it's the cape of an npc or something. However, isn't that a fractal in the top left?

A web-type thing. I'm pretty sure it's part of the destroyer hives, like in Genius Operated Living Enchanted Manifestation and A Time For Heroes. But what's interesting is it's so hi-res. It looks like it's right out of concept art!

Correct. There is no logic in developing GW2 on a GW1 .dat file. Unless of course they plan on releasing these ideas on GW1 as sort of an alpha test for the features that will be presented in GW2.

I knew that. Now, in order to hide the fact that I got pwnd, I will stubbornly defend my position with this: [BS]Maaaybe theyre streaming stuff over NOW and then will somehow link the .dat files of GW1 and GW2 to transfer those files + HoM stuff over? [/BS] (Note: You win =P)

Or, what Silly Warrior said.

Actually, as per the article in PCGamer all those months ago where they first announced GW2, they are in fact using the GW1 engine, with a large number of improvements added to it.

To correct you, they are using the GW1 engine as a basis, but it will be updated and heavily modified. Thus it would not be compatible with the older engine, and therefore all this nonsense of finding GW2-specific things on the GW1 .dat is absolutely hilarious.

I am not going to even go into the whole .dat /= engine idea, because technically, the "GW2 in GW1" ideas lack a technical understanding in the first place.

We are not seeing specifically GW2 designed things in GW.dat. What is the logic behind it? Why go through the effort and bandwidth to distribute it when it is uselessly sitting on our computers? At best it is something developed for Utopia that is being redone in the new engine, and is merely old code/skins/etc that isn't cleaned up.

Some things could be compatible, there's no way to know how they plan on changing that.

Or they are just using GW1 to alpha test certain ideas and concepts now so that when they release GW2 it's more streamlined...?

You know that if they release a big, new feature there will be loads of people going to Sardelac and 'suggesting improvements'. Better to test and streamline it now on GW1 and let people hack it to pieces than let GW2 have a bad review on a major feature right off the bat.

In the same way Blizzard has been using .pak format for most of their games, and Sierra used SGI and LucasArts used SCUMM, or the way database applications use SQL...

It makes a lot of sense. The .dat file is merely a file system. It's independent from game, and they can use existing servers for streaming updates (which isn't such an easy task).

But putting GW2 content on GW1 servers - no. Except for play-testing, which would, again, make a lot of sense. They have a game - to test certain things they don't need leet animations and high-resolution models, they don't need jumping to test auction house, they don't need new terrain to test questing and dungeons....

Re-use is the name of the game these days. It's simply impossible to make a financially viable game without it.

I have to agree with Aerian- you're overestimating the compatibility of data. It's akin to saying that just because you can put both jpgs and mp3s into a .zip file, you can copy-paste bits of code between the two and still expect them to work.

(Or if you want a less drastic example, mp3 and midi- similar file type to the non-tech-savvy person, completely different data organization.)
