Yeah I've been following this thread, I guess I don't "have" the experience of having someone ask me "Am I a girl...Am I British" am I this or that. I'm not saying to lie...thats not the issue. Some people are simply trolling (in game) for trouble. For example....how would I know a certain someone is a female in game by their actions? How would I know someone is homosexual in game, merely by their actions or speech? I'm a bit older (in terms of GW avg age), and no age =/= maturity, so much of how I think is probably outdated.

While I don't speak for everyone (obviously), most of us don't go looking for trouble, it just happens that people guess, or others have Local Chat on. For instance, I was helping a guy (level 15) through Riholn Refuge and Moddok Crevice (gah, never do that, it isn't fun) and half-way through he asks me if I'm a girl. His reasoning? I was polite.

It just happens, really.

Nah, brothergrim (sorry about not using numbers) there's a part of me that wonders the same. I can tell you, that I'm not asked such questions in game and have been following the thread and am really amazed at how many personal details people share online. Maybe I'm just overly cautious. I don't ask the same questions of other people, never really been asked such questions online. In IRC I get the same questions and I joke around or avoid the question (love sarcasm) not really hard to keep those details private actually.

I guess I'm just of the sense that I know everyone has a different opinion, different backgrounds, we come from different environments, and unless I'm prepared not to be overly sensitive about such things then if I choose to share them I choose to hear others opinions on them. Bad and good.

Yeah I see where you are with this and this last post helped me understand. I would guess to say this comes down to how open a person is...both probably in RL and online (social etc). I personally am rather closed online and more apt to listen then to speak in RL. I do agree with you how most people have a hard time accepting something other than theirself.

I start off with a respect level smack in the 40% area. Being gay/bi/black/white/asian whatever will not change that respect-o-meter. Keep on talking about it and the respect level goes down. Focus on the game, and my respect goes up . Im not saying don't socialise, but get all ethical/political and i start to lose interest. As i said before, i just want to relax and play it .

This is why my local chat is off in shing jea, RA, LA, Droks, Kamadan

I've read something similar in another thread, some guy was in a team with elementary schoolers and they were giving so much info that they could've gone getting them he was a sexual predator. But IMHO, it's not the same. Sure there's some stuff that spark up in idle chat, but I don't reveal every aspect of my life every time - now it's that I'm a Quebecer, the previous time I was studying Japanese, the next time I'm going to talk about... how I prefer colorful clothes than black.

I get questions. I reply truthfully 'cause I have nothing to hide, and I guess I'm not that scared about stalkers from the net. Not the case of my mother, who's very scared about such things because they talk about it on TV (yeah, the TV's aaaaalways right -_-;;; ). Dunno if she realizes it happens much less than she thinks, but even though I let people know in the city I live in, it doesn't mean they'll come after me to beat me up. And this doesn't mean, however, that nothing affects me 'cause I end up giving details...

When I answer to the "so, are you a girl?" I say "no, I'm a gay guy. I just am flamboyant." 9 out of 10 times, there will be the person that is mighty fine with any sexuality being like "OMG! I WANT YOU AS MY BESTFRIEND <33" and I love that.

I honestly don't mind what the people in game talk about.

It's a waste of time to get emotionally involved in anything online, not only games. *cough cough* Myspace *cough*

I was kicked out of my old guild because my monk's name is Boyfriend of God.

It was stupid, but I'm not angry.

This almost happened to me today. A friend invited me to clear Sparkfly Swamp in HM (Yeah, I wanted to write my will before even stepping foot there oO) and unexpectedly there was someone else there aswell. He seemed alright, when a few mins in we were (bar myself, who whipped out Shared Burden and ran :P) eaten alive by dinosaurs. At this point he kept saying about how "gay" they were, etc:

Me: Don't you think that's a little insulting?
Him: What?
Me: ... forget it.

Because my other friend was there, the last thing I'd want to do was start the "don't use gay as an insult" argument. I do pick up on it more now, as earlier in the day I told off my guild leader for doing it. :P

Funnily enough no one questions my gender (female chars) or my sexuality (um... yeah?). Personally I would only offer the information if I was really outraged at someone.

I once had a guy ask me if I was a girl because I remarked that I was getting really terrible drops. I guess he thought I was being selfish, but I was more annoyed that everyone else was getting golds while I got trophies. :P

I tend to be open and chatty because I hate to kill in silence when I finally get groups. I H/H so much; it's just sad.

I don't really get stereotyped. But I only tell people i knew on gw for a while who are good friends stuff about me. Even then its still only general stuff like how old I am, what city I live in,my real name. Some times I get poked fun at for being a Canadian but meh.

Yeah my alliance knows a bunch about me as well, probably as far as my socks' color, lol. I don't care. I get poked fun at being Canadian too (and even worse, French-Canadian!) and tease me a lot 'cause of my strong Quebecer accent. Yesterday I had one literally giggling at how I pronounced "three" :P. Oh and apparently Canadians say "aboot" instead of "about"? NEVER heard "aboot"... .... but I'm guilty of saying "eh?" a lot >_>;;;...

Most of the times I'll laugh at it and joke along, but yesterday I was beyond pissed; they know when to stop most of the time.

I rarely talk about my own race/sexuality/religion etc on Guild Wars.
Usually It the less than subtle type of gamers who bring it up working on the assumption that as my character is female, blonde, well endowed and in scanty armor - therefore I must be female, blonde, well endowed etc.
Gotta tell you I get some funny looks when Im out getting the groceries in my Sunspear elite armor...

I was saying... when I'm on a female character, people mistake me for a girl because of my character since I'm very cheerful and say "omg" or "your armor looks amazing :]".

Hehe yeah, too many people think someone's char is the person's gender, though we all know that some classes (ele, assassin) are pretty much best played as a female character.

Admittedly there's lots of people whom play on female chars and act so nice I assume they are girls (it seems that the actual female players on GW are nicer anyways) only to have them then mention how their wife is nagging them to get off GW or something.

Nah, just plain old idiots (generic stereotyping FTL! Too bad I can't help it) or people who are genuinly confused at why someone would have a female character when they're a male. Which to be honest is quite a fair number of people, I've met actors who don't understand the concept of roleplaying.

Juged on wild, baseless assupmtions stemming from the media and popular culture. I'd like to blame "Will and Grace" except it's been around longer then they have. If people think you're gay for playing a pink Para why not ask them why they think that?
Pointing out to someone that their comments are moronic might get them to change their ways (though don't use the term 'moronic', it could turn out ugly), unless they're a general asshat.

Id answer that with, Old enough, yes please, behind you.
Not gay myself, but have had people ask before, because all my characters are female. I like girls, and I like looking at them whats the big deal? I guess some people have that "immersion thing", and visualize themse;ves as their character.
Personally, I dont care whos what. I just want people to be decent human beings, and play the game fairly well, thats all I ask for.

Everytime I see a warrior with a sword, I think they are like 13 years old. I base this on NOTHING, I have no reason to think this but I do. I also know that I am an idiot that thinks this, and I try to push the thought away when he say:

Random Sword Warrior : OMG!WTFBBQ! I HIT SO HARD! MY WARRIOR IS SO BADASS! I HIT SO HARD! LOOK I DO MY AE MOVES NOW, AND EVERYTHING TAKES DAMAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me: Yes, you got splinter weapon.

I can very much relate to this thread. I been playing GW for about 2 ½ years and I can remember one of the first things I did was look for a Gay Friendly Guild… And I was practically crucified in open districts. Then I looked to a forum for other gay players… crucified again… It’s like… when will people grow up… and honestly… when did Gamers become so closed minded?

I also play mostly… well only Female characters… and guys automatically assume I’m a female… so I just play it off to avoid confrontation. It’s really all kinda lame if you ask me… But Oh Well.

That's why I played male chars right off the bat. You don't wanna go "ASL??????" at the 6'4" mean-looking dervish, and who has interest in a male monk?

ROFLMAO! I remember having to spend a half hour or more having to educate warriors who just could not understand what I meant about dragging healers into battle, their faster health regen rate, my need to regen energy, etc. Several times I had to take them to an explorable area for "show and tell"! I don't think this has changed very much for new players; today they tend to either bring a healer hero or include a healing skill on their bar. So it seems less prevalent.

The other day I passed a monk with an interesting name: I Don't Heal Morons. On questioning, "she" stated that as you would expect she tends to solo a lot.

I think a major part of the problem is the market for games has changed. Originally paper RPG's were played by "intelligentsia" college kids, moved down to high school "nerds" with a good shot of middle school / junior high adherents as well, but generally stayed about there. The rules were just too complex for younger players to do everything required on their own. But note that these players were, as a group, more likely to be broad-minded.

Now with the advent of CRPGs, complex programming/scripting languages and high-end computers the genre has been opened up to a substantially younger audience. So we're seeing younger players, people who are still in middle school, joining the ranks of gamers. Considering this is almost a natural outgrowth of the "imaginary" games & life of a child, it shouldn't be so surprising that these games are so popular with this age group.

With the average age of their participants constantly getting younger, companies must make allowances for the "target market" in the product. Their is no way to avoid that. In business you've got to "follow the money".

MTV is experiencing the same problem. Remember the 80's and VJ's? They were 22-40 year olds catering to a college audience. Seen MTV lately? The audience now consists of very young ladies, in their early teens.

And I don't think that reality TV is helping. The implication these young people may be getting is that drama and/or extremist personalities and appearances become famous.

Replace "gamers" with the majority of people ><. I can really sympathise, I am in sort of the same predicament. Imagine you walked into town and (with a loudspeaker) announced your sexuality. Same thing, right? People who play games are not massively different in their variation of beliefs than those who don't. As previously stated, people from all different backgrounds play this game... I think the % of homophobes is the same... unless I'm much mistaken.

Quote:

I would like to flatly contradict you here. There's a very smart girl at my school who is a closet homophobe. I won't go into what she says about gay people, but it's not pretty. Even the brightest of people can be marred by prejudice.

Oh and editing my first post here... yeah actually I was discriminated once xD. Waiting in Saltspray I was talking about Yaoi to someone when this person said the usual "fag, you're sick, get cured" etc etc. Funnily enough this only happens in American districts (most people in English European don't speak English, which is sometimes nice ^^). I would play in a Canadian district by the sounds of a few posts here :P.
