what gender do you play?

Hi, I'm doing some research for a class I'm currently taking. and I'd like to ask some questions on how people play and what they think about playing different genders. feel free to skip over any questions you don't feel comfortable answering. your avatars name will not be used in the final report.

1.what is your gender?
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?
3.why or why not?
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?

1. Both (mostly male)
2. Yup
3. I play different in GW mainly for the appearance. I hate the male monk animations and looks so I play a female monk.
4. Sometimes
5. Not really no
6. No.. That's very difficult
7. No I don't
8. Depends on how good they look and such. In games like Oblivion I mainly play males. Not often I play female except SOMETIMES in MMO's.

There's my answers ^

5. Nope
6. Nope
7. Nope
8. Yes. My best character in Oblivion is a chick, and I've played in other RPGs and games as a female

1. Male.
2. Yeah.
3. Because most male characters are ugly, and female characters look purdy. Not to mention some dances are bad / good (Male Ele dance = wtf?).
4. I'm not really concerned about real-life genders.
5. Nope.
6. I don't really understand that one.
7. Nope.
8. Depends. I don't want extremely ugly characters, now do I?

1. Male.
2. Yes.
3. Mostly I select based on my preference of elite/obsidian armour models for each gender of each class.
4. Suspicion is never a factor. I've no real interest in people's real world gender.
5. Never.
6. A couple of times
7. Never.
8. Again, depending on the character/armour models for each gender. ie: I can't stand butch warriors, so I'll always role a female in Gws.

I'll be picking a random character of mine, so I'll pick Dimitri Cervantes.

1- Male
2- Yes.
3- Because I just didn't want all male characters. I wanted to have a combination of both.
4- Strangely enough, the two female friends who play Guild Wars do not have male characters. Mostly everyone I know who is male prefer female characters.
5- Gender means nothing to me when it comes to meeting people or making groups.
6- My female characters tend to join groups more than my males, but my male characters tend to, as strange as this is, not get attacked as much from monsters.
7- Only if someone only played their opposite gender.
8- I have no comment.

All computer based/ video based chars, that don't envolve gender role playing.

Silly questions if you ask me.

9 chars 1 Male ele (my first gw char ever, acts like a mule & and an ass ), Female: Warrior, Paragon, 2 Ele's, Necromancer, Ranger, Ritualist & Monk.

1. Male.
2. Yeah.
3. When I made my warrior, a female, I didn't like male armors. Then I made a female monk out of boredom.
4. Most female characters are controlled by males sooooo.... and I know a couple gals who have male chars.
5. Depends. I still call female characters "she" until I'm told it's a guy...
6. Nope.
7. Nah.
8. Don't care so much, depends of the playability... Usually prefer playing males because I'm male; being gay I prefer looking at male bodies, but I do like variety sometimes and when armors doesn't suit me for males, I play female chars. Although sometimes it's just awkward to play as a female, especially if I have no choice in choosing genders (Diablo 2 comes to mind).

1.what is your gender?
I'm a guy
2.Have you ever played a character of the opposite sex?

Yes.
3.why or why not?
Multiple reasons. Like, a lot.
-As a writer, I have a few characters that are female and I reflect them in games.
-A more common excuse, I don't want to look at a guy's ass for 2-8 hours.
-Male armor... isn't that great.
-Females are skinnier so I see a bit more on screen.
-More I can't even remember.
4.Do you often suspect anyone else of playing a gender not their own?
Always.
5.Do you treat players differently based on their avatar’s gender?
I do not.
6.Have you taken advantage of your characters gender?
Once in pre-searing on a sexy female elementalist, some guy kept giving me hold. I happily took. But that was a year+ ago and I've never taken advantage over my female characters.
7.If you know someone is playing a character of a gender not their own, do you treat them differently?
Nope. Because I do the same thing.
8.Would you be more likely to play a character of the other sex in another game? If so, which one(s)? Why?
75% of my characters on WoW are also female, and they're 100 times better looking than GW females.

2.yes

3.it really depends on what character options I'm given, when I made a warrior I made a female one b/c I can't stand the look of male wars. Often times with GW however it's just what face/hair options for each gender that determine what I choose.

4.not really, I don't really think about the person behind the avatar unless they feel like sharing, and I've met enough female gamers to make me not believe everybody's actually a guy

3.Because I use characters from a story that I am writing, there are women in the story.
4.In Guild Wars? Always. With most having over 10 character slots, how could one resist stepping over to the other side?
5.Yes, sort of. Like avatars on a forum, a subconcious message is sent. (Like hippos for example, they are much more dangerous than gators, but many dont instantly recognise them as hostile because they don't look as mean.)
6.Not on purpose, I always roleplay a small bit though. Unless someone mentions me personaly, all the messages are counted as directed toward my character.
7.Yep, it gets real awkward when this text bubble apears over a woman character: "Im scratching my nuts". If that player would have used a male character while saying that, I wouldn't have to have mind troubles.
8.Any game where you need to spend more than 80% of your time on one character or have only 1 slot, my character will always be male.

8.Depends on how the textures look. In NWN, both are ugly so I take a dude for expediency. In Oblivion, it's a lot of fun to play with the face creator until I get a good looking woman. It's vastly easier to design a good looking female character as a guy, since I know what I'm looking for.

Any picture of another person, real or computer generated, is pixels. Artists make pixels with the intent of being good looking, and they generally do a decent job.

Speaking as an objective outsider, what difference does it really make what sex your character is? If you find the female sprites more aesthetically pleasing, play with female chars. If you like male sprites more, use male characters.

Since many people play guild wars as a hobby for maybe an hour or more per day, they want to enjoy it as much as possible. If that means they want to have a female character over a male character (maybe because 1. there aren't as many female chars from my own experience and 2. female sprites look better)
I really don't see how that sounds pathetically desperate.

It really only becomes pathetically desperate if that's the only interaction with women you're going to get, or if you deposit your character's image into the spank bank.

From another angle, plenty of girls think various celebrities they will never meet in real life are hot. As long as my girlfriend doesn't take her crush on Johnny Depp past idle fantasy, it's fine. As long as I don't take my crush on Scarlett Johansson or my avatar in Guild Wars beyond that, it's fine.

1.) Female.
2.) No, not yet at least. I do want a male character for variety.
3.) I enjoy playing female characters because I'm feminine in the sense that I get giddy over cute hair and armor styles. I do enjoy the male looks, but I've just naturally gravitated toward female characters for the most part.
4.) Yes.
5.) No, I treat them all the same depending on what they do or say.
6.) No.
7.) I tease my friends about it but I don't really mean it. I wouldn't mind playing a male character, and I can see why they would want to play female characters. However, I do tend to roll my eyes at the stereotypical "female characters are better to look at while I'm playing" thing... I don't see what's so terrible about the male looks I guess.
8.) In a lot of fighting games I'd rather play a more normal looking male than over-sexed looking chick who flops around like two gigantic bags of jello with every move they make.

3.The female form is exquisitely attractive, even the majority of heterosexual women will tell you that. And for some strange reason, this is true of mmorpg femmes where minimum coverage=more armor, go figure.
4.No, I don't care for other player's rl sex type, I care for how they game.
5.No, an avatar is an avatar, nothing more. I treat them on how they act, and treat others.
6.? I don't understand this one. Do you mean, asked a cosplay girl to dress up as a ranger wearing elite druid armor, perform the ranger stripper dance, and let me have my way with her? Sure, I'm guilty as charged. =]
7.No. I treat everyone based on their actions.
8.Yes, as stated before, the female form is alluring. If I want to stare at naked guys, I'd join any sports team.

As long as I don't take my crush on Scarlett Johansson or my avatar in Guild Wars beyond that, it's fine.
