You may not select as your Character Name the name of another person, or a name which violates any third party's trademark right, copyright, or other proprietary right, or which may mislead other players to believe you to be an employee of NC Interactive or its affiliated companies, or which NC Interactive deems at its sole discretion to be vulgar or otherwise offensive. NC Interactive reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (1) delete or alter any Character Name or (2) terminate any license granted herein, for any reason whatsoever, including, without limitation, any suspected or actual infringement of any trademark or trade name right, copyright, or other proprietary right."

Now if you notice the bold section it states that you cannot name your character anything that NC Interactive deems to be vulgar or offensive.

They seem to believe that Cleavage is inappropriate.

Their standard modus operandi is to temp ban anyone with a name deemed as such and to require you to rename the offending character after the temp ban is completed.

Does that answer your question?

Suck it up. Think of a name that won't be offensive in any way and when your ban is lifted rename your character to something less inane.
You still on about the EULA? We all know the people who are offended and use the /report feature are the ones ruining it for everyone...ANet has given the power to the fussy people who are playing with their church group. If it were the "sole discretion of ANet" there would be no /report feature and the names would likely, then, be overlooked and allowed to stay...especially something as mild as "Cleavage", which, by the way, is an excellent name for an axe warrior considering the meaning: a cleaving, splitting, or dividing. Most dictionaries have several definitions before: the hollow between a woman's breasts, as made visible by a low-cut neckline, which I cannot, for the life of me, figure out HOW that is offensive in and of itself.

Once again you are missing the fact that ANet does not find it offensive. "Sole discretion" implies they, alone are finding names offensive, yet, THEY do not think it is inapropriate...it is the person who typed /report and brought it to their attention who thought this, acted on it and brought it to ANet's attention as something that person saw as offensive. ANet, then, sumarily banned the name (most likely with no real consideration as to wether or not the general population would find it vulgar).

Hiding behind the rules, even when you bold them, does not excuse you from your civic duty to question authority when you beleive authority if being abused or given to the wrong people...in this case, the wrong people are typing /"report"

Get it through your head: the command is "/report," not "/ban."
I actually pulled it from betwixt my asscheeks kind sir! LOL...Did I actually accuse them of not reviewing reports, or did I suggest they did not give consideration to what the general public would find offensive? The words you are attempting to put in my mouth are bitter...quite bitter. And I find it funny that you are going on about them not having 3 million people to monitor the game...blah, blah, blah...you're right, they have over 5 million who can do it for free through the /report feature...How many people do you suppose actually review those /reports?

Perhaps you should get it in your head (not through...I'd like to see it stick there) that the /report feature instigates the ban and in all likelihood, there are only one or two people so overworked at the thousands of /reports over light humor that they take minimal time to review each without credulity as to the validity of claims of scurrility.

Wow, you just took my sentence and modified the syntax from "accuse" to "suggest," and "not reviewing" to "did not give consideration..." semantics are exactly the same.

I am not disputing that a report can lead to a ban. I'm disputing that most reports lead to bans (The main argument behind too much power in too few conservatives.). Where is your data to support your claim? Right now, you have names that were banned. Do you also have the list of names that were allowed through?

And now you're saying that they're overworked. I'd like to point out that hunting down and verifying massively differ in man hours. Additionally, do you actually know how many reports are made to support your claim that the verifiers being overworked?

Well I think 'bugger' isn't all that common in America (where I assume Anet's based), so they probably don't think it's offensive. Clevage, however, is everywhere.

Yes. However with the "Big Lip" part in there everyone with even an iota of an IQ know exactly what your friend was trying to do with his name.

Typical stereotyped racism.

Hiding behind an actual item with a name similar to the intended target.

Even if on the astronomical chance that your friend was actually trying to be a dinosaur named player. Why did he bother with "Big Lip"?

It's on par with "Master Baiter". We all know what it implies, but what if the player is a champion fisherman? Doesn't matter. It's not appropriate.

I'd say most banned names are probably funny. The bar for getting banned by Anet appears to be rather low, which leads to an unfortunate fact: Creating a funny name can easily give emotionally immature, frigid, or simply uncaring players a weapon to use against you through the /report command.

My (main) character's name is "Aina Galamarth". It has no worth whatsoever; to use a cliche, it's boilerplate fantasy drivel. So are the vast majority of names in Guild Wars; they've got no purpose but to be worthless garbage nobody will remember with no purpose other then to clutter the game with meaningless letter combinations which are often unpronounceable.

I have a friend with a slew of supremely funny character names which not only fit in the standard fantasy archetype (at first glance) but also contain ingenious puns based off stereotypes of their respective classes. That took effort, and I respect him for making it. One of his names was reported (it's borderline, but not explicit or "potty humor" by any means) but, fortunately, no ban.

Frankly, I wish I'd gone to the trouble of writing something neat with my character name. While I can see the reasoning behind reporting "4chan" style humor, most of the stuff I've seen in this thread really isn't that bad (most of it isn't all that funny, either, but it's better then Garfield..) Anyone trying to pointlessly destroy a good joke just needs a therapist or a day away from Guild Wars and in the sunshine.

got 3 day ban for..."Sausage P A R T Y" and "Tigg As Bitties" and "Lets Keep It Hetero". i think someone reported me then they checked my whole account character names and gave me a day ban for each name. official word from anet was that i got banned for the first two names. but i think they just didnt want to say i got banned for lets keep it hetero because lets face it, only gays would get offended by that. and anet doesnt want to state they are gay. lol im just kidding anet, dont delete my account.

Perhaps you should take a course in the study of semantics: meaning in words. Suggestions and accusations, by no means convey the same meaning. As for reviewing vs. considering, you would also be wrong... especially in the context of the original post. "not reviewing" would be an absolute, whereas not giving consideration, in its original context suggests review occurred, but without great thought to social norms. To quote myself:

"ANet, then, sumarily banned the name (most likely with no real consideration as to wether or not the general population would find it vulgar)."

I did NOT say, in an absolute, that ANet did not review the /reports, just that they likely did not consider, in any great depth, that the names, though off-color, would be considered offensive to the general population...supporting previous statements of mine that ANet caves in to the vocal minority through the /report feature.

Do you have any evidence to support the opposite claim? Why deal in absolutes when there is no evidence to support your position and then suggest I need the same evidence you lack? As many of us know/suspect, ANet is pretty tight-lipped in its sharing of information, especially when it comes to the inner workings of why and how they do anything.

Quote:

Do you? I was responding to your suggestion that:

"...ANet introduced the report feature because it is not feasible to have 3 million people on their payroll to monitor the game on a daily basis (even on weekends and holidays!)."

If it takes 3 million to monitor the game daily, including weekends and holidays, I would assume that there would be a great need for reviewers given your suggestion that a ratio of 3/5 exists in needed monitors vs. number of accounts. I actually have no clue how many people it takes to run the "/report review division", but given the relative perceived proportion of GW to GW2 workers, I made an assumption that there were few people actually spending time in the review process.

It would be interesting to see how many /reports are sent out each day, the number of people reviewing them and how much time is allocated to this task...I sincerely doubt ANet would ever release these numbers, so all information about it is relegated to speculation at best.

It is, I think, reasonable to assume, that there is not a supreme counsel of arbitrators sitting around a table discussing the social relavence of each and every name...I stand by my supposition that the number of people dedicated to this task is few and that, though the number of /reports is unknown that if even .001% of the accounts made one report in a week (assume they work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day) that would leave about 1000 reports to review each day...slightly over 2 to review each minute for a single employee without breaks...125 per hour...I'm not saying those are the numbers, but any way I look at it, it seems a daunting task. I have no idea how many people are doing the work, but it seems to me that unless there are several of them, there is little time to seriously consider every name thoughtfully, especially when there are so many other reasons people send /reports.

If you beleive that fewer than one in 1000 people send at least one /report per week or that ANet has a dozen or more employees whose sole purpose is to review /reports...then I can see how you might believe the /report system is fair and impartial and that every person who has had a questionable name has had their name fairly reviewed.

Yea, this will probably get locked, but I've been waiting for it to happen for several months now and felt like sharing it:

I guess I should have deleted him back when they started banning offensive names, but I wanted my mini pet so I left him alone. Then I get my minipet, and during the session that this screenshot occoured, I still wasnt reported. Everyone ingame that I knew loved the name, that isnt an excuse I know, but back when I made the character a year ago, they werent giving out 7 day bans for offensive names so I felt like making this character.

Then today, people in RA American dist 1 were fooling around reporting everyone for everything and anything, so I logged onto Dixie just to get reported on purpose.

Woo hooo! They finally got me, but 7 days ....

Meh, life goes on.

I didnt ask anyone to report me, I just turned up where everyone was typing crazy stuff about reporting anything and everything, so I swapped character and started typing.

I got a mini hydra which is safely already in my HoM. I have 14 minis in total now.

Im not bothered about losing the character now and didnt mind getting reported, but 167 hours ....

lol.

Oh, I was also banned over the weekend for telling someone NOT to use the N word, but because I typed it out, I had a 3 day ban for use of a racial slur, so no dragon festival for me either.

That is maybe why it is 7 days.

What kind of perverted mind one has to have to mutilate words into something offensive?

My Dixie Normus

Yes very offensive indeed! So they ban for anything now?

Seems like most people get banned in the Arenas or AB. A guildmate was banned tfor a PVP mesmer amed Surprise ButtSexx.

Other seem to get banned when in all chat in large outposts.

My point being, if you want to make a tricky name to share with friends ad the like, you can do it and stay low on the radar. Running into AB or RA with "Bangsa Hoe" or "Dell's Peckers" is just asking for a ban.

As someone else stated, I have stock names for my toons, all fantasy tripe type stuff. so I guess I am just boring.
