Admit it guys..its time. Have you ever scammed?
Nightmare_Pwn
Yep. back in the first years and even into the second. Had a guild Dedicated to Scamming the dumb and the ignorant.
How much money did I make? Over 450k from one couple and another 200-270 from smaller jobs.
Was it worth it? hah Hell yea almost a million for 2 weeks work using just my words isent bad. Well at least until I got suspended for 2 days. :P
Sure its bad to Scam and it messes some hard working people up, but thats what you pay for ignorance.
Oh. I've never ever paid for a run in my life. Over 6000 Runs at 1-3k Each. You do the Math

Basically, you'll sell out just as much as anyone else, but you believe you're somehow more dignified because you want more money for it.

But that just brings up the old game of "What would you do for 1 million dollars?"
Would you punch your mother for 1 million dollars?
Would you eat dog crap for 1 million dollars?
Would you kiss/blow a dude for 1 million dollars?
I wouldn't break someones car window if i saw a dollar or even 100$ on the car seat, but if i saw 1 million dollars on a car seat i sure would.
I never once said i am dignified i just said my integrity is worth a bit more than 500 fake guild wars gold. I didn't say my integrity is invincible or perfect, just a bit more apparent than most people. (Id feel cheap and petty if i went around nickel and dime scamming people all day)
Basically this is how it goes
IF Integrity > survival THEN: dont take advantage
IF survival > integrity THEN: just do it
100 bucks isnt going to affect my life much so then integrity wins
100 million bucks would greatly affect my life so survival wins

I think ts great when a scammer you lets folks know what a total piece of crap they are.
Excuses like 'they were stupid' don't cut it. We were all noobs at some point.
I would never feel good about taking advantage of anyone and think those who do are lower than whale shit.
This is nothing to be proud of..go through life like that, and with luck you can find a nice 'lover' in prison :P
Worst of luck to scammers.

The only time was when I was a noob 3 years ago and scammed my way out of paying 500g for a run (sanctum cay probably). Slightly regretted it ever since.
I don't power trade so no problems with that. The "step out side" thing is just complete bull, as well as putting up 10 for 100. Those people can have their scammed crystallines shoved up their asses.

I may have taken advantage of people operating under false judgment, but that's something different.

oh yeah, did my fair share of scamming. im one of those people back when i started playing two and a half years back, saying "running to droks 1k here 1k there" on my lvl 16 necro primary, and you wouldnt believe the saps that would fall for it i got a good sum of money... for my knowledge and level at the time, 20k was a hell of a lot :-P
R_Frost
yeah when i use to do runs in tyria. after i started getting more non-payers then payers, i stopped running and just laugh when i see people begging in towns for runs.
Tha Axod
yes i did, a long time ago in diablo 2.
for those who know the game, i sold an unid dragon shield as being unid stormshield, which should be monarch instead of dragon shield tho it looks the same.
this was in the time of patch 1.09 when stormshield was still worth a lot, i traded it for a 40ed/15ias jewel, which would now be worth an awesome lot of gold even in gwg. Tho it gave me a bad feeling and i pm'd the guy and reversed the trade :P

What's pitiful is when you see runners scam their clients, and it's usually for such a pathetic amount of money. Good examples of that are runs where you pay at the beginning, or halfway through, like Droks runs, some missions, etc. They usually scam because they don't have the know-how to do it, but have the right profession, so they "capitalize" on that circumstance.
Do those scamming "runners" REALLY think that a few hundred gold, or even 1.5k is that much money? I mean even if you ripped off 5 people running a mission for 500g, that's 2.5k total. It probably took them 30 minutes to make that cash, and there are several more legitimate and efficient ways to make money.
That leads me to the conclusion that stupid (re: not rude people. I mean unintelligent or incapable) people are more likely to scam, and are almost always the scammers. Those who can, do. Those who can't find the next best way (trying to rip off someone who can).
In case we're not clear, I believe I just called most self-admitted scammers in this thread stupid.
Those who want to argue that their motivation to scam is based on the "laziness" factor are on the losing end of that battle. How long do you usually think a fake runner spends time getting a full team together, for meagre amounts of money? Or the person who tries to sell an item falsely advertised for more than it's worth? I can make money a lot faster doing it my legit way

I bought expensive items from players that didn't know its actual value and I still do whenever an opportunity presents itself. I don't really think of it as scamming although I wouldn't be surprised if other people would think other wise. >_>

I have never scammed. If someone wants to sell me something below its actual worth, I'll inform him about its true value prior to any purchase. I simply refuse to exploit anyone's ignorance and misery.
On the flipside, many scammers have tried and failed to steal anything from me. I treat all transactions slowly and carefully. Caution is my friend and ally.

Never have, never will. I already feel bad enough, committing even the smallest of errors, scamming someone or even taking advantage of a free opportunity would probably make me quit the game completely out of sheer guilt.
A lot of the scams aren't worth it anyway. A lot of people that scam seem to do it because they are sadists on the inside, and enjoy inflicting pain on other people, no matter the type. It doesn't matter how much money they get sometimes, it's just the thought of someone being upset/sad/angry that gets them going. Even worse, quite a few know how to get away with it completely.

i used to buy feathers well under merchant value then merch them immediately (buy at 12g each sell at 25-30ea). not really a scam because i bought exactly what i said i was buying, just exploiting the fact that most ppl don't pay any attention to the material merch. twas increadibly boring tho so i only did it for an hr a day for about a week but made about 60-70k
just to balance out, i had a regular tonic (the one that turns you into a candy corn man) and someone said they'd buy it for 450e, they opened up the chat and i put the tonic in the trade chat to show them they accepted and i closed the trade told them it was reg. and they said oh and left..

As far as I understand the mentality of a typical scammer, 'sadist' is not a good description for it. The pathological scammer sees his actions as a sort of game not much different from Random Arena, but instead of a battle of swords and spells it's a battle of wits and every successful scam boosts the ego of the scammer because he pulled it off through his superior intellectual ability. That take is, of course, entirely delusional because it's a game of trust, not intellect, but it doesn't stop the scammers believing that everybody else deserves to be scammed because they are mentally inferior to the scammer. Hence the tendency is one of a psychopath, not that of a sadist.

People have been asking for a definition of "scam" throughout this thread. At first I thought it was obvious but then when I saw some people treat bargains (paying less than an items market value) as scams I changed my mind.
Here's an attempt at a definition:
A scam is a transaction that one side regrets IMMEDIATELY after it occurs.
This includes picking up dropped items without paying, switching amounts and items without the other person noticing and not paying for services but it precludes bargains due to non informed players since they do not IMMEDIATELY regret the transaction (maybe they do a while later when they become better informed).

Never scammed. Tough I do love going into presearing and advertising I'm selling a Black Dye for 100g. The insane amount of people that pm me and open trade, makes me laugh.

Never scammed, to the best of my knowledge never been scammed. I've sold stuff too cheaply and too expensively, and bought stuff too cheaply and too expensively, but there was no malice or deception involved, simply that I didn't know the going rate for the item, so it was no scam.

I've not paid for a couple runs before, but only because the runner was an absolute failure.
Only reason i didn't leave before was cos i was watching tele on my other pc screen..

never scammed, there really isnt much point to the game if the only way you can get ahead is to scam and hurt someone else's feelings
as far as definitions for scam goes
a scam is usually and instance where the profit is all one sided and the other guy gets the shaft.
getting bargains isnt scamming,if someone is trading you a very pricey item for like 1 plat.
shit happens..go get a pricecheck

Once I was selling an item for 350K I offered the usual 100K+ xx ectos option
The guy said that he didnt want to deal in ectos and pay all in cash.I said that was ok but I would pay only after receiving the full amount
He gives me 300K in 3 transaction and on the 4th one he put 50K and I put the item and traded.HE sais he was shocked and was sure that I was going to scam him
Unintentionally sometimes I have done thing that look like a scam it was today I wa buying locks for 8.5K and I put 8 and 5 instead of 500.It lloked like i was trying to scam 5 gold instead of 500 gold , but I apologised when he pointed it out

I got scammed last week.
Some one bought something off me for 100k, but only paid 100g. I accepted because I didnt check properly. I know that this is really my fault, but in my defence, it was late and i was a bit tired. I usually am very good at checking my trades, this time however the scammer got lucky. The person than went off line, obviously because they knew that what they had just done was wrong, or dishonest. Otherwise they wouldnt have acted like a coward and left.
Anyway I was so upset that I just got off the game as well. I know I should have reported this person but, at the time i was rather upset and it took all my self control not to throw my computer across the room.
These types of things unfortunately are a fact of life when dealing with people in GW, but also online. People use the annonimity of the internet to do things that may be deemed as dishonest.
The low morale standard or high level of dishonesty displayed by people who play GW just represents the average type of person who use the internet.
