Remove Reporting for Language
RedStar
I don't get offended by words, but some people do.
The chat filter isn't a solution...I mean most people don't write correctly (like biatch).
Also, you don't speak with the same language to your friend and to strangers...do you ? Like I said, some people get offended very easily.

It's a PARTIAL MEASURE just in case people do not follow the rules. You must follow the rules and us proper language only regardless of the chat filter, since such language is forbidden by the EULA itself. If you want to be a dirty loudmouth... well... DON'T. Proper language is the only valid language, you can be the evilest demon of hell or the darkest anti-hero, and yet you MUST use proper language only. Not a single swearword should be allowed. |

Anet makes the rules. If you actually read the EULA instead of hitting the agreement button, there's some guidelines. For example, you wouldn't keep your job as a courtesy greeter at Wal-mart if you were using foul language at walk-ins and displaying rage all day. There are guidelines that they follow. There's guidelines in life. You can use foul language in real life, but all that does is shine your immaturity and lack of intelligence to use a better descriptive word in it's place. Learn to say 'fudgecracker snapcakes" next time. No one will report that. You may even get a few chuckles then you can be a comedian. Then I'll sue you for stealing my quote.

I stopped reading after your second sentence. While I agree that being able to be suspended for language is bullshit (it happened to me), I'm tired of people always spouting about how they have a right to free speech.
You do NOT have any sort of right to free speech in Guild Wars. Free Speech, as spelled out by the First Amendment, means that Federal and State governments have no right to prohibit you from saying whatever you want. However, Guild Wars is a private service offered by NCSoft, and while you're playing, the Constitution does NOT apply to you. You agree to abide by their TOS every time you login.
While you're right that the language rules are full of shit and need to be removed, you can't use the First Amendment as your rationale.

I agree on the fact that there is a language filter in place, and is recommended for the younger players in the game. But taking out the entire /report is a bad idea. People who say offensive things towards other people more than deserve to be /reported. But getting reported for using swear words, is RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO stupid.
Cale Roughstar
As was kindly posted on the first page, the verbal abuse /report function does NOT apply to swear words. Verbal abuse applies to one thing and that is... abuse! When the OP's buddy called someone an f'ing asshole, he was reported for abusing the other player. He could have called him a "vapid slag whose brains are the size of peas." and the ban still would have been just as deserved. It was abuse, and that is what A-Net does not want. They want a friendly enviornment where we can all get togeather, play the game without being insulted, and then go sing kumbya afterwards .
The fact that he used swear words made the offended party much more likely to report him, but it all comes down to abuse.
Both sides do have to remember that it is JUST a game, people will screw up, and people will screw you over and sometimes the only thing you want to do is just beat them over the head with a 2x4 but that doesnt mean that calling them names is appropriate.
Kindergarden anyone?
However, I do agree that the idea for banning someone for using curse words is stupid, as the chat filter IS there for a reason. Don't like the cussing, turn off the cussing! The aforementioned ability to add words to the filter is a great idea for those with more tender ears.

Anyways, yeah I agree that if he called someone a fcking asshole or whatever he can be banned, but it was more how we swore during our CoF run because something bad happened and we got ripped off because they decided they didnt need to pay because of the swearing. I'm not going to lose my account for like 3 days or a week because of 2 plat but it's still annoying how they can do that when it was really obvious it wasn't actually offensive to them, they were just cheapskating it.

I look forward to my gw dat file increasing by 50% to cover the swear filter.
This must of course cover all languages from ancient dead languages to made up ones such as Kilngon.
Then all the misspellings abbreviations rhyming slang and other methods designed to make the meaning clear while bypassing the filters.
Then there is the army of moderators to act upon complaints.
The inevitable arguments about he said she said etc.
Its a lot easier to stop such people being able to exercise their free will for a short time or even permanently if they don't take the hint.
In real life if someone bangs on your door swearing or playing their TV loud all night.
Local government seldom suggests you invest in earplugs they take action and fine individuals and even kick them out of town.
As in real life so it is in the game expect reprisals for bucking the system.
The right to do something also comes with the responsibility to not abuse that right.

hell, i know a 7 yr old who plays the game, so dropping the f-bomb isn't very wise. you can say it to yourself, but why type it? if someone goes + aggro'es an entire mob, or annoys you, yeah, you can say, 'why the hell did you do that?', or simply shout at them not to do it again, but using the f-word isn't neccerssary. the report section is for those who are racist, serial swearers, and just plain abusive, and seeing as there are so many of those people out there sadly, ANet won't get rid of it.

A few points though:
Non-subscription games are rife with bad language, as such they are just as rife with those that detest it and are anally retentive enough to report every little thing they take offense to.
Speaking from my personal experience I have never encountered the amount of abusive idiots as I have playing GW and as such the fact people get banned for it hardly surprises me.
Offensive is subjectively and personally defined.
You have no input in that definition what-so-ever.
If it's an issue for you there is a blatantly obvious solution.Change the way you interact with others.
Simple.

Do you have kids, OP? And if you do, does it not make you cringe when at the ball park, or McDonalds, with your kids, and someone in there exercises his constitutional rights by spewing language that would be considered foul in HELL, not two feet from your child? Or better, how about the look on your kid(s) face(s) when you have just finished vomiting forth such language in their presence? Do you do that? I mean, it's protected, right? Your speech?
And do you know how much MORE effort it takes to actually type in profanity, than just to swear to yourself at the computer? Noone else needs to read your profanity, do they?

If Spanish 'Nigro' stands for 'Nigromante' (necromancer).
You cannot make a successful filter for all available languages at the same time.
If someone use improper language, the fault is his. It's not fault of the ones listening.
If someone shots you with a gun, it's your fault for not dodging? No. It's fault of the one shooting.
This is the same. People must refrain from using bad words, not prevent listening other's bad words.

But while my example had one person swearing none stop and you may swear once in a night its not a fair comparison sure I see that.
But wait your not the only one swearing you and many others swearing means the overall effect is similar.
I am not too worried as I seem to miss most of this when I am online.

If you are using the word F*** for any of its various sexual connotations or to provoke someone, you earned the ban. There are other unique cases:
I F***ed up - which I've never heard over the internet, no one ever admits to being wrong
F*** (uttered as an exclamation of frustration) - having a temper only makes it funnier for the guy who gets you banned
What the F*** was that? - why are you wasting the time to type out the two words in the middle
Actual usage of the N word is a guarantee of ignorance if not racism. (I'm white saying this) Pronounced with the -er at the end, and it's widely recognized as being used to degrade another person. Even black people use it against other black people as a sign of contempt.
If you talk about how people end the word with -a, consider that the word has been used for centuries only by racists. I would believe that the pronunciation of the word was changed on purpose to instill racial pride at not being offended by a word that has always been used to offend.
Grow up, read history, get off the internet, live in the real world where there is an attempt at diversity. Racial relations are still tentative in most of the US. You did not indicate your race, but consider yourself lucky that your black friends have tolerance. Really, it's a credit to them for understanding you don't mean anything by it.
But in specifics to what the thread has been about, I think racial slurs are far worse than other swears and I can't find a single reason why the ban wouldn't be justified in those cases. I'm also kind of laughing at the supposed rights being attributed by free speech here.

Sweet Mystery
People who feel they have to write swear words to say something on a game just need to learn you can speak it and not type it....
If you feel you have to swear at people and be abusive, then be prepared to possibly be banned for doing so if reported....
Respect others and don't swear.... use other language to convey your meanings.....

How people speak in guilds and alliances is that guild and alliances problem.
People talk differently when they are at home, with their friends or with strangers.
It's in local, trade channel and also whisper and party with strangers where you must behave.
It's not: "I don't know them, they don't know me: I don't care, they should not care, and anyone complaining should shut up".
It's: "I don't know them, they don't know me: I must behave, I must expect them to behave, and anyone not behaving must be punished".

Ok, I've got 3 word bans to date. Last one was 1 week, and I had it repealed because it was agrovated and it was coppied by the recipiant. Word filter should be automatically enabled. If you have a problem with swear words, then leave your filter on. If you don't have a problem with swear words, take it off. Racist comments are "swear words". They should modify the filter, and then remove the report function. I'm tired of watching my mouth in La. I'm 20, I can say w/e the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO I want whenever the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO I want to. Got a problem with it, Filter me, Ignore me, or turn of that chat. Problem solved.
Signed 200140000 times because I'm sick of little RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOers getting me banned.
It's time for a change, swear words are imature? W/e, if I want to swear I should be aloud to. Telling mommy and daddy is pretty damn immature if you ask me. So who's more immature, the tattler, or the swearer. Answer that before you flame on me, I'll crush you with intellect.

I can control my language quite easily. Should I have to is my concern. Say I really really hate it when some Christian preaches his values to me, can I denounce his faith in GWChat? No, I'll get a ban. If someone scams me, screws me up, or insults me, can I respond? No, I'll get a ban. See the pattern? I want to be able to speak freely. Censors are in place for a reason. To censor that which one who enables it does not want heard/seen. Don't tell me to get vent, because I've already been on vent with many different guilds and social structures. It's different obviously but its also aside from the game.

Back to the message of the thread. Responsibility for ones actions. You swear you get reported = ban
Master Fuhon
Integrity is being consistent with internal beliefs about proper behavior. Lacking integrity is having a good mouth that you use in front of people you want to impress, and using the bad mouth whenever you are sure it won't come back to hurt you.
Having integrity or morals is a very safe way to live. You can choose to have no morals and find out that many others are better at stealing, hurting, or lying than you are. Or you can have morals, and find out that there are other people who are willing to stand up for you. The game company is watching out for you, just like they are watching out for the more sensitive players. They can let us all rot if they wanted to save resources.
Mommy and daddy is the video game companty to more than a few players. They don't respond to right/wrong/integrity stuff. They respond to discipline in the form of punishment. Consider the ban a smaller punishment than you could face swearing at a guy in a bar while drunk. You can earn a week icing your jaw every time you exercise your free right to swear at people.
Maybe you just slipped up and swore in front of a guy's kids, and now the kid just repeats the word. Turns out removing swearing from your vocabulary isn't much of a sacrifice to make and it decreases the amount of risk you face in the real world.
You also don't win any points making fun of a religion you don't believe in. Internet = plugged in with the rest of the crazy world, just not connected.

I am not going for points, I'm going for logic. If someone wants to insult me and use religion as his grounds for reason in doing so, he's gonna get some of my medicine right back at him... Don't give me a reason to swear, and I wont do it. Seeing as everyone gives me a reason to swear at one time or another, I'll keep the trend up. Watch this, RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO, see how easy that was to ignore. Now you know I just said that word at you, but if you were 11 you'd probably think it humerous. My point... Chat Filter needs a serious upgrade.
BFG
It all comes down to simple consideration of others, at which evidently many fail. The chat filter and report system are fine as implemented.

Precisely. Make the game universal, not one dimensional. "You can't do that or else." Well look at it logically... Why can't you just let us do it, and force the smaller minority to not see it. The majority wants to swear, the minority doesn't want to swear. Pretty simple if you ask me.
carnage-runner
Oh well w/e... People can say that we are instilling our views on you.. I am. But at least my views make some sense... Majority wins over Minority.... PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Most gamers swear, want to swear, or want to kill Anet and the Tattle Taler for getting us banned. I am saying, upgrade the filter to the point of it actually working. I don't want to have to watch every word I utter because some 8 year old got on to a computer. RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO the community, the community is what it is. And in this said community there is a damn chat filter that can be utilized to protect your evangelic eyes from the hellacious vocabulary that anyone who plays video games most definately has.
Accursed
I'm 13. I here swearing all the time. I don't cuss unless someone said a racial comment directly to me or if get very frustrated which isn't very often.
But you can't just take out the whole Reporting Option from the entire game from your one F-bomb. Someone cannot report for one little F-bomb unless your saying it to them.
If the GM does do this, then I would wish that they would be fired from the Official ArenaNet gaming company.

Its very sad when threads are closed for any reason other than the question being solved.
Whether its because the original question was a problem, or because it starts a flame war.
Try to stay on topic and not let the flamers win out otherwise it becomes an easy way for some to prevent discussion on any topic they disagree with.
Everyone dislikes limits or boundaries to their activities and enjoys testing those boundaries.
The language filter is ok as it is and I believe it is updated as needed, but people are inventive and can get around any barrier if they work at it.
Its no big deal as long as it doesn't get out of hand and mostly it doesn't and please don't bring religion into it there is a place for religion and that's in your heart not in a computer game.
What defines a swear word is very much a cultural thing and good old fashioned cussing isn't anything to be ashamed of but doing it front of impressionable people isn't a great idea.
Point is we never know when online who we are interacting with just keep it in proportion.

Well spoken gremlin.. We are straying from the point.. We should all realize that the game has a language filter already in place, and though some of us (yours truly) don't neccessarily agree with it's performance, it is what it is and is extremely unlikely to change. There is a place for ideals, and that is in your own home, I do not need them in mine. Good old fashioned cussing will always exist, and everyone gets mad from time to time. My only serious problem is I can make someone feel 10 times worse without "swearwords" than I can with them... A swear word is an easy way to express anguish or anger. It gets it out and over with quick, whereas not swearing can turn it into an extremely ugly, albeit clean, insult. I don't care about limits and boundries and inventive people. I care about not being able to use some choice words because some impressionables don't have the decency to turn on their filter.
I resort back to the plain and simple argument that will never be disproved.
If you don't like it, turn on the filter, or f12.

Swearing will never stop in this game, and the idiots who report will never learn to just keep there filters on. Yes, its that simple. Maybe even when you create an account it asks for your age and if your under 16 you have filter set on normal and under 14 you have it set on max. Something to just protect the little ones so the older ones can feel free to express themselves maturely.

I am in favor of the language filter being removed so I can properly express my outrage at the posts in this thread.
There is no freedom of speech here, and if you can't discuss this reasonably, you'll lose speech altogether.

Your views lack a true sense of logic. I especially enjoyed the notion that you can not find any words to express your feelings other then the over used F--- word.
Fact: The average American has a vocabulary of 3000 words.
The educated American uses 5000 words in their vocabulary.
Winston Churchill had over 15,000 words in his vocabulary. This does not include other languages that he spoke.
My point. You are unreasonable and an antidisestablishmentarian. So look that word up. It is way better than saying f--- Y---.
Edit: I'll give you a hint. It is the longest word in the English language.
