Do you Play or Farm?
dilan155
Im curious to know if you come to either farm in GW or just play the game. I think one of the biggest problems in GW is how unstable the economy is. Elemental swords, colossal, fellblades etc etc have all gone down hill because of farming, hasnt it?
what if we make the reward for actually playing GW, doing missions, dungeons,quests etc, better than those of farming? i realize that the rewards will have to be carefully though out so that they dont become over powered.
Im sure that this will give birth to a lot of fail posts, sarcastic ones and just plain +1 posts that GWG is famous for so flame on.
p.s- keep in mind im not QQing that farming is bad or anything, just wondering do you really enjoy farming more than playing GW and what you think would happen if the reward for playing became better than those of farming.

Farming is repetetive and therefore boring for me. I'd rather play, but I don't even do PvE anymore. AB and on the rare occasions GvG and HA are about all I do now.

I PLAY and FARM. And I found both fun. (Can I have a cookie?)
Your economy will be stable if you get basic skins and 1k armor, and then you save every gold coin you get.
Economy is only unstable if you want a uber-leet-skin because it makes you uber-leet, and then everyone can get one, so your e-peen dies...

Poor system of incentives, marginally balanced content that begs you to exploit it with certain classes. Yes, it's basically a farming game because they've never managed to get much more into the scope of it. If you're feeling nostalgic though you might replay the missions with a new class or something.

I dont farm at all. Unless you call zaishen trapping every once in a while farming. Also RA for zkeys, farming. I get my money from playing the game.
Farming is just soooo boring and repetitive and bleh. I only farm if there's some item drop weekend. Even if I do farm it, its not more then 2 hours >>
I play the game and I get money from predictions. Only farm when needed, which is rarely. Sure I used to farm when 55 monks were the bizzness, but after I got ele vabbi, I never touched my 55 again xD.
If the rewards from dungeons, quests etc were better, sure I'd do more dungeons and such. I don't think it would hurt to have a few more pixels in my pocket :O
So I play, predict, get money, and that's how I roll

I play gvg and farm french people being bad at the game.

I just play, the money comes along.
Dronte
I only play HA and sometimes gvg, I get all the money I need (a lot more than I need, actually).

After doing each campaign multiple times (As I'm sure most of us have by now.), I find that I farm 75% of the time and the other 25% is when a guildie needs help or someone wants to do a dungeon or AB.

The economy seems pretty stable to me.
1) new item "A" is discovered and highly sought after = $$$$$
2) Players go for this item more than others because it is wanted, so supply catches up with demand. Price drops $$$
3) Players continue to farm item. Supply passes demand = $$
4) Item "B" pops up, Item A price bottoms out, Begin again at #1
The only time things go screwy is when a skill "balance" makes something that used to be difficult to farm become easy. See: ecto
EDIT to actually answer the question : I'm mostly going for titles now, so if that's farming, then I pretty much just farm.

I play and farm. If I get bored of one, I do the other. If I get bored of both, I play another game.

I only come online for doa with my guild(i would call that farming), and to say hi and have a chat.
The title grinding, missions and quests now bores me to death..

Play and farm.. Although farming is still playing so it's all the same thing to me..

I only farmed to get my chaos gloves , 5 sets of elite armor and r10 norn ( I didn't use it since I got sick of farming ursan with ursan). Took me several days for the gloves and armor (perma mes ftw!). The rest of my gaming time was spent doing regular stuff and some funny sh*t with guildmates. I would say that I spent less than 20% farming.

I'm a playah. I only farm on very where occassions where I want something supa dupa bayad.

what's with the assumption that farming in guild wars is not playing guild wars?

I play. I farm when i need to (ie, armour, weps, dyes, Holiday events) I want titles, but i dont rush through and just do titles. But it might also help to define farm... I keep looking for oldschool FoW/UW/Ugroz/Deep runs - Obby tanks, nukers, etc- those were play and fun too! SF tanks and doing FoW in 30 mins or less while you wait for pizza is a farm. I would love to see some reward for those who just play the game. how idk, but i would love to see it.
EDIT: To Rhamia... yes. farming is playing GW, but not really playing GW. Farming is repetative. Playing isnt repetative, though to get some titles, you do need to Farm (rep, SS/LB, maybe holiday items) but the rest is just playing, doing missions for fun, not profit.

Play here, mostly just farm for titles.
Dr Dimento
I find myself playing guild wars more lately, but only to gain the reputation/title points to make my PvE skills more efficient at farming.
Oddly enough i rarely farm, but when i do, i like to know i have one of (if not THE) most efficient builds.

farming isnt playing in the sense of playing. farming involves doing something repetitive for profit, where as playing involves doing something for fun and its not repetitive. of course in order to do either of theses you actually have to PLAY GW so gz on making perhaps the first +1 post on this thread.

Ranger = Play: Tyrian Cartography
Mesmer = Farm: Cryer Farm
Elementalist = Inactive
Warrior = Play: Canthan Guardian
Necromancer = Play: Helping People on NM missions when no one is around to help them out.

I tend to play more, though I should probably farm more. My only incentive for playing is that for some reason I always want to get some kind of new armor, which usually requires me going through a certain campaign.
That's not to say I don't farm though, I did nothing but farm during this year's Halloween event. By the time the event ends tonight I'll have over 5,000 Trick or Treat bags.

Of course, if you farm non-stop, it can be too repetitive. But farming isn't repetitive for me...

I play. I never farm. The closest i've ever gotten is doing my LDOA. I guess that is farming in a sense, but trust me, after this I will NEVER farm again. It is soooooo boring.
Icy The Mage
I farm. It's Fun. It's not Boring or repetitive. Carpal Tunnel FTW! Oh and I monk AB with D-Shot, ended up d-shotting d-shot yesterday, was pretty cool... And yeah... That's my story.

Things I do:
1) Talk to friends
2) Work on Titles/M.O.X. quests
3) Talk to random people
4) Run around in Guild Hall aimlessly for hours until someone I know gets on, then I do #1.

Seriously? not one hardcore farmer replied? Oh-- they must all be too busy farming. I've gotten extremely bored with guildwars for gameplay. I've got a monk with over 20M XP. Also a perma sin. I try all the new farms. I mainly just farm. all I do. I can't remember the last missions I played that I wasn't rushing through it to get to the end, to get a skill, to make a farming build.
Whats more important in GW than money? You can get anyone to help you to do anything, offer them in game gold. I find myself logging on and thinking "What should I do?" well.. "farm, what else?"
no one else finds farming the only thing left to do in the game? those people like me with over 3000hrs of gameplay?

I have over 5,6k hours in gameplay and still find things to do. Whether its vanquishing or helping out a friend, farming is a last resort for me. I dont need heaps of gold to just sit there and stare at.
Even if I'm not doing anything, I sit around and talk to friends. I usually almost find something to do in gw, that doesnt involve farming :P

as for me i farm and play get sick of one, do the other, if i want a new armour set for some character, i farm the cash. i've never been a trend farmer..(i.e. voltaic spear farm etc.) although i have hopped on the raptor train not for ele swords but for golds, mods, and ToT bags during halloween

I don't need money for anything...rarely PvE nowadays anyway

I do whatever new thing I read about at guru..... then I get bored and read guru...and the cycle repeats.

I turn on the computer and stare at it for hours on end without moving any part of my body. Does that count as playing or farming?
Cargan
I play. I just come on and either start a HM dungeon run or tag along with a guildie to help with whatever they're doing. I may have done everything 100's of times, but it's not so much about what you're doing, more about who you're doing stuff with that makes it fun. I do farm on occassions when there's no-one to do stuff with, but that's maybe 1-2 hours a week at most since I stop whatever farming I'm doing as soon as a guild party is forming.
And yes, even after 6500 hours of playing GW I still find things to do. There's alway stuff to do. Sure, I get bored as hell when I'm doing stuff on my own, and usually log off again, but when there's a good group of people to play with the social aspect shines through.

I used to farm, not so much anymore. Now I usually PvP (does that count as play?) stand in spamadan or do chest runs (which count as play, since I do them for fun).

I play to have fun clearing an area with H/H as well as farm.It also avials me to talk to ppl on my friends list.
Vigorator
I mainly just log on to talk with people now as i do other things (browsing the interwebs mainly)
Ocasionaly i will farm me up some stuff for the consumable titles that i have left but i never really play at all anymore... just farm me up some money when i am not sitting idle on GW talking
