I don't see how ArenaNet not giving out info is them handling the situation badly. Games that are quite some time away should be kept under wraps. It makes the wait much, much easier. Well, maybe not easier. But the wait is extremely hard if a lot of stuff is revealed and you can't wait to play it. It's really awful...
I do kind of wish we had much more info, of course. But then it would be difficult to wait! It's a dilemma.

Apologies Martin, I seem to have developed an ability to phrase everything I write in the most negative light. I'll work on that.
Firstly, as I edited into my post after Inde's comment, I absolutely do expect solid info on GW2 before the end of this year. There's no way I think you would be happy with anything less either.
My point was simply that you are intelligent enough to know not to give specifics. You wouldn't have made a promise that didn't give you flexibility in how you met with it. I'm also sure you weighed in your mind the benefit and impact giving that promise would have.

You got it wrong RR, people write on these forums the way they do (me included) REGARDLESS of whether Anet can see what we are writing or not. We don't sugar-coat our words the way you might've liked not because we don't think Anet could see. We do it the way we do because that's what we want to communicate. It's that simple.
Little/no response might discourage people from posting more. After all, why bother? Some will still continue and post, though. But when most people don't see the point of posting here and leave, the community we have here will die a bleeding death. Look what happened to TGH and its PvP community. Or better, ask Lonesamurai. |

Again the forum community while vocal and knowledgeable, is a small part of those who play the game. Please don't assume that I want things sugar-coated, but at the same time the constant whining of some on the forums does no good for anyone. I find it funny that the people in my alliance, the ones who play the most, hardly have anything to do with any forum. I have no entitlement because I post. I am no better than those who don't. Maybe if people played more or found something else to play we would have less time to dwell on when GW2 will be released.

Forum community might be small part of whole player base, but it is most visible.
If someone puts "Guild Wars" to google, guru is the only forum on first result page and one of contributing reasons to buy/not buy gw. Quick check on forums will reveal state of game. It sends message to anyone unfamiliar with game and right now message is "devs gave up"
For example, if I search for "Guildwars", and get localized results, third result is http://guildwars.cz/ - PvP based fansite, once quite big and quite active, "serious business is here", making custom tournaments and whatnot.
Last news on frontpage is from 2008, more than year ago. If anyone sees this while doing quick checkup he can say that game is deader than disco and will steer away from it.
Do devs want this? Do they really want to look like they are pushing vaporware sequel to dead game?
Or do they want people busy creating 100 page threads while fansite front pages are full of recent articles?

So releasing info, even lore, seems to have draw backs, as does not releasing. In a way, it's a lose-lose situation. /shrug

Funny, I see on the main page TGH is hosting a reboot party.
Maybe that's a bad thing to you. It's probably a good thing for the community at large, however...
which brings me back to the point of this discussion:
ArenaNet has decided (or, more likely, NCSoft has decided) not to release any further information about GW2 at this time.
Reading between the lines of Martin and Regina, it sounds like they want to.
Seems best at this point to just wait and see what info comes out at the end of this year. I'm confident that any perceived damage can be undone.

You also must understand its easy being on the side-lines and telling others what to do. Like sitting infront of the TV and watching a WW2 footage and telling soldiers which way to go and how to shoot, But when put into the same situation but in person the chump craps his pants and starts to folow orders .
Same thing here we all say what they should do but many of these 'do this" sayers have no idea or knowladge of bussiness world once-so-ever and just say their "right" moves based on silly assumptions

I think they are handling this very badly. For many players GWs has become boring. I only log on to see if any of my old friends are on, or if my friend has left me a message in our guild announcement. A lot of players have left and are playing different games. Maybe they intend to come back and play GWs 2 when it comes out, but if they are involved in another game, and have made new friends then chances are they will not come back. By not giving us info about GWs 2 people are not staying interested in it and the original GuildWars, and like I said are leaving for other games.
I would get more titles if I had more information than that they will do "something" or give some benefit. Right now I feel like they are not worth my time, cause they are boring to get, and are all pretty much a grind. Right now I don't think they will do much, because new players to GWs 2 would be at a disadvantage. Will probably just be some more words under your name that people can see, and be like "wow you played GWs 1 a lot"... big deal.

Anet doesn't have to give out any information and you will all still buy the game. You're already hooked and you don't know it, otherwise you wouldn't be posting here.

All the grind is there because some players demanded it. And like you say, the HoM will probably just be a "wow you played GWs 1 a lot" benefit.
I took practically a year off playing Guild Wars until the April update, and I'll probably take more time off before GW2 comes out. I have no idea how many titles or how full my HoM will be, I don't have any hardset goals. I'm just trying to have fun, and the minute it stops being fun, and becomes "work" is when I quit playing.

The way I see it is this: if you are that starved for GW2 news, and if it means that much to you, you may need to step back from the game for a while. Yes, I know it's exciting that a new Guild Wars is coming out. I'm going to buy it as soon as it comes out, like most of us. But to demand news from the developer is kinda crazy, don't you think? For now, just relax, have some fun with Guild Wars 1, and if it starts to bore you, pick up another game for a while. I took about 6 months off to play some WoW, and as great as a game that is, it got boring for me after a while. I came back to play some Guild Wars (new character, new beginnings) and it has been a blast.
So, just chill everyone, we'll find out more news as Anet releases it, and nothing we can do will make them go any faster

they CANT give us info because of aion, after aion, they will. im sure they would give us info if they could but they rather dont make ppl wait for gw2 yet, so they can buy aion now and gw2 later making ncsoft happier its the best they can do now, im sure we would have screenshots and stuff if there wouldn't be an inhouse title with very similar target market, they could still give us the info bomb like they want now in the end of the year but make us calmer with info swarming

Seems like we get to see something after all on the GamesCom in cologne. If thats the case we will also see something on PAX.
Ravious
Oh wow. I wonder if that is some kind of certification to publish the trailer in Germany (they have lots of silly rules, like no blood, etc.). Could that be the thing we get this year?
(Mythic actually had a very cut trailer for WAR, initially. The NA version made much more sense.)

since it is rated kids or something, there probably won't be much to see. however, it is nice to see the project is still alive and we are really getting more info soon.

I think what everyone is misunderstanding about the GW2 status is that A-net has not direct power over when to release information. NCSoft chooses when to release any info, if at all. Right now, NCSoft is trying to put all their efforts into marketing AION, since Tabula Rasa left them with over a $100 Million hole in their budget. What I can be sure of is that once AION is released and the launch hype is done and over with, we will hear about Guild Wars. Also, keep your eyes open for PAX, which is coming, and A-net usually releases some info there.

Nice find Aljasha!
Does it say 6 September anywhere on that site? I couldn't find that.
I hope we do get more info than just a GW2 trailer at PAX though. A trailer plus a (low key) playable demo would be nice.

It says Test Date 06.08.2009 (which could be August 6 or June 8, both of which have passed)

I would guess they reviewed it August 6, 2009 (EU does date.month.year), and they allowed it to be released within 6 years?
I know it was strongly hinted that they would likely have another trailer, but they should for sure. I still watch the Factions one from time to time...

Edit: Yes, the USK is the German ratings board, I assume NCSoft/ArenaNet had to get their permission to show the trailer...
SECOND EDIT:
Since it says "Gamescom Trailer" I'm going out on a limb an predicting this trailer will be shown at Gamescon, Aug. 19-23.
Ravious
Ah, that makes much more sense.
Tr0n
Hehe, nice find. Let's see if they show something.

It is titled "Gamescom Trailer" and Gamescom is August 19-23rd, so maybe we'll see it a little over a week from now.

That's interesting if it were so because ArenaNet will not have a booth there. (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:...-_24_July_2009) Martin will be there, but that would be an interesting decision to reveal a trailer for the company's most anticipated game without the company having a strong presence there. Of course NCSoft will be there....

I'm holding out for PAX for some info. There was a hint by Regina on the wiki that they would have a "surprise" for us. Could be Guild Wars, but I'm thinking Guild Wars 2.

Tr0nc3k linked me a German forum with the same info. Seems ArenaNet will have more of a presence at GDC than just Martin. http://www.wartower.de/forum/showpos...86&postcount=1

Given the timing/context that almost certainly looks to me like the next "major update." I'm betting on them selling us some actual new content for GW1.

"There is again new hope for Guild Wars 2, because our user Urvater discovered an entry in today's Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) to a Guild Wars 2 Trailer. This carries the relatively clear names "gamescom Trailer" and of the USK as "released starting from 6 years old" evaluated. On details over length and contents, however, naturally nothing is known. Additionally, the announcement of the attendance of Martin Kerstein, as well as Global Brand Director Christian Lye, content writer Jeff Grubb and Art Directors Daniel Dociu makes us hope for more information.
(tried to clean up Babelfish: it translated "Global Brand Directors" as "global fire in the Directors" )
Maybe? But if GW2 is close, I doubt we're going to get any major updates for GW1. Guess we'll find out soon!

Where did wartower get that info, do you know?
