That looks amazing (and yes I will not restrain from giving compliments after all). Fun to see some returning characters you are working with. Really like the motion in that picture, I really need to learn to put characters in odd perspectives, because it makes things come to life so much more!

Charlie, that sculpture is so unbelieveable. Reminiscent of Grenth meets Balthazar, the hands and the helmet that is.

But honestly though, this is too good for words. -slow claps-

Just out of curiosity, is everyone else in your classes as talented as you? Im just trying to imagine how ridiculous that class would be with such talented people.

Awesome sculpture and sketch, Charlie! All the hours you've spent on that sculpture of yours are really going to pay off, I can see that already. It looks very professional.

And hehe, yeah, art schools tend to be really hectic with the deadlines... I guess it's that if artistic people were given enough time to do everything, they'd either procrastinate and do it in a hurry anyway, or then take so many extra projects along with school work that it'd end up being the same thing. :P
At least, that's how it worked in my graphic design school... if the teachers weren't awake enough to swamp us with deadlines, then we were be plenty capable of doing it ourselves.

Sorry I haven't been able to respond to everyone's post lately - winding down to the final 2.5 weeks of the semester. Getting swamped with work before final critiques. Though the good news is that some fun new stuff will be coming in here soon.

For our illustration class, we need to create four greeting guards for a mock avant-garde paper company. Sounded kind of "meh" at first, but I got the go ahead to create some fun little joke-fantasy cards. They'll be a mix between the style I've been developing in Char Design and my usual fantasy stuffs. Kind of playfully vulgar jokes - good stuff.

Char Design is still under development as I'm re-visiting the sketches I made at the start of semester, along with some new stuff. Currently making some fun little expressions sheets for Dorothy.

As for the Executioner sculpture, he needs to be done by Tuesday at noon. All the iron oxide I had applied for details actually turned the clay and glaze into a solid deep brown color, rather than a greenish discolored copper. Though that's also due to the clay I was using being rich in iron. Anyways, that's always the risk you sort of take with glazing things *shrug*

Either way, I've already started applying watercolor and acrylics to bring in that copper effect - and it's working quite well. I'll post some pictures on Tuesday night from the critique that includes the finished color, LED lights, and the dry ice effect. Looks significantly different than the last WIP shot. And on top of that, I'll also be making a sea creature installation for that class' final critique.

In the meantime, here's some preliminary sketches of the Oz piece I just posted. Just to give you an idea of the different views and poses I had to go through in order to reach the final version. Also a reminder showing you the importance of preliminary sketches before you jump straight into final layout:

@Toms: Oh you

@IH: Just goes to show how many poses I had to go through before I got it right. But more importantly how different the character's personality changes because of slight changes to posture. Pretty much the entire upper row in the Scarecrow page doesn't fit his character at all - comes off way too serious in comparison to how quirky he's meant to be.

@Duranin: Thanks, it's refreshing working on something different for a change.

That's pretty cool, Charlie, and somewhat reassuring that works of art don't happen on the first try, even with really great artists

Just out of curiosity, is everyone else in your classes as talented as you? Im just trying to imagine how ridiculous that class would be with such talented people. Ah, sorry Death, I didn't see your question until now.

I dunno, that's kind of a hard question to answer because everyone is so stylistically different. That and the opinion is coming from me, rather than another person. I see a lot of cool and interesting things being made, but it's not often that I'm completely "wowed" by something.

As far as other opinions go, both my current and previous ceramics and illustration teachers just gave me feedback recently. Current ceramics said she rarely ever sees someone spend so much time and detail on their work, and that I come off as a more classically trained artist rather than the new breed of conceptual ones. The previous teacher commented along the same lines in terms of work ethic and how far down the line that goes.

Illustration said, reading from the note: "I've never met anyone with such a sophisticated and directed body of work in 371B. With the rest of your time at Long Beach, just try to get out of your artistic comfort zone (maybe you are already and you're just handling it really well?) and make something that has nothing to do with your portfolio as it exists now... Beautiful work this semester. Let me know if you need a letter of recommendation"

That's good news to hear, considering 90% of everything in that class and this semester has been something outside my comfort zone and new subject matter. So I must doing something right.

EDIT: I'm hoping to get around to commenting on everyone's threads sometime later next week. Next week is final critiques, so I'm hustling to get everything done in time. Haven't had time to sneak a peak at everyone has been working on around here

When you said sea creature I was hoping for more than just a head. But 2 days – really is that all?

The thing is so big, that I don't even know where to put it. Sits at 10" tall and 14.5" wide - not really a coffee table kind of piece.

Yeah, the serpent head above is the sea creature I previously mentioned. I originally was thinking of making kind of a giant worm rising out of the sink with open maws, but the deadline totally killed that dream. Not this Thursday, but the one before that was when the deadline was set to the 12th. So that only left that Thursday and the next Tuesday to work on it.

That in mind, I had to settle for something way more simple. Too much work in my illustration classes to dedicate another 48+ hours in the ceramics studio. Anyways, I'll try to get some final pictures up next Tuesday for you since my critique was pushed back until then.

But just for fun, have some line-art for an illustration project a number of weeks back. First real comic book theme and styled work - still have yet to take a picture of the colored versions:

I'm posting these more as a brief overview of what goes into designing characters, and potential ideas that others can use as help. I'll try to post more in-depth summaries later - still rushing to finish my illustration final now.

Development sheet showing the initial concepts and pre-finalized designs. You can see in the first steps of both characters, I was still stuck in a realistic style. Took a good amount of time and fighting to finally let go and analyze things more in simple shape than anatomical structure.

Final expressions and poses.
