First real stab at this speed painting everyone is doing. Though I'm not sure if it can be considered true speed art because I did go back and do some extra rendering. In any case, it was a learning experience and I'm satisfied with it. Soooooo, here's the first arena - Ascalon Foothills.
EDIT: Also, this was just done tonight. Landscapes sure are a hell of a lot easier than figure drawing.

wow, Charlie.
I see nothing in the way of you becoming a true professional within the year.

Damn, if that was just a bit taller, I could use it as a wallpaper.

@Smilin: that sounds like a good setting; I've always liked the gothic European theme the Kurzicks have going for them.
@Tzu: Thanks a lot, I appreciate the vote of confidence
@Tommy: Gah, if anything I would hope my artwork would help inspire, not un-inspire you. Whenever I see a really awesome piece of work, I get extremely antsy and feel like being creative.
As for the golems, I'll definitely be using the GW1 versions of both characters. Not really a big fan of how Asura look/sound extremely child like, while the golems aren't nearly as big and intimidating now.
@Hail: I'll let you know if I start getting around to it.
@Blade: Thanks, glad you enjoy my updates!
@Verene: Yeah, sorry about that. Since it was my first "speed paint" thing, I didn't want to get too ambitious with the size of the canvas. I'll be sure to make the next one desktop sized.
NEXT UP: Possibly another landscape & my warrior fighting some really ugly foes. Not sure which order they'll come in.

Awesome charlie is awesome! I think someone probably mentioned it before but you really should be a concept artist.
Chicken of the Seas
Wow, that would be awesome! I wish you the best of luck, I don't see why they wouldn't let someone with such talent as yours be an intern.
(Just don't tell them you like GW better xD)

Charlie Dayman
Best to remain optimistic at this point. In the meantime, I'm just going to focus on getting better with the tablet and an all around artist. After seeing some of the work from the other current concept artists, I know that these guys are top of the line.
And I would be royally screwed if anyone were to ask me what my favorite Blizzard game is, lol. Though I should maybe ask Regina if they have another branch out in LA. If there is, my head might explode in sheer anxiousness.

Once again, my fickleness gets the best of me. Another short night's practice with speed painting, though this time I was banging on all cylinders. Figured out that scratchy texture that's commonly used which in turn gave the painting a whole different feel to it. Not to mention, it really makes for some beautiful surfaces.
With that being said, here's Ascalon Foothills Arena B! There was something about the depth in the other painting that bugged me. That and it didn't seem to have that "epic" feel to it. This one seems to express the outskirts of Ascalon a lot better. Overall, I'm pretty excited about this piece.

Very nice, would like to see some different colours, allmost looks like an expension from your previous speed painting. But looks just as great

YunSooJin
i think this 2nd one is way better. way more stimulating to look at
Widowmaker
I'm not sold on the arches to the left, they feel a little too flat to me as the light isn't catching them. The frustum of the supporting column towards the middle appears to be at an odd angle.
The rest though is very nice, a lot more depth to this one and the light is nicely framed. A definite step forward from the first.

I do prefer your original for this concept: that is, I imagine that the combatants will be superimposed over the landscape, like in our loading screen.
Your character paintings themselves have stunning backdrops.
*[wishes that loading screen b/g can be selectable too~! actually I'm sure this has been mentioned a lot in Sardelac, and some textmod pros have in fact done so ~]

*[wishes that loading screen b/g can be selectable too~! actually I'm sure this has been mentioned a lot in Sardelac, and some textmod pros have in fact done so ~] I agree with you how the characters would fit in a lot better in the first picture since the composition isn't nearly as complicated as the latter. But with these landscapes, I really want to treat them more as traditional landscapes rather than a typical arena design; clean center with surrounding architecture. I rarely (and I stress rarely) ever do landscapes, so this is a great opportunity for me to finally get some solid practice in.
And about the loading screen, I didn't know you could change that. If I would ever decide to change from the original art, it would definitely be with something more finished. I consider these more rough sketches than anything else.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I also thought up an idea for your assassin.

Sat down with this painting for the last two nights. Grothmar Wardowns.
YunSooJin
oh hel yeah charlie
what brushes are you using?

what brushes are you using?
Charlie Dayman
Most of the time, just the standard brushes but with texture presets on them. A few custom made ones here and there for the leaves. That's about it really.
YunSooJin
you know charlie that bridge doesn't really make that much sense upon inspection :P
Charlie Dayman
Whatchu' talkin' bout, Yun.
YunSooJin
the bridge is straight-on side-view, right? I don't get the sense that the bridge is very large. And so my mind tells me, if the bridge isn't that large, I should be able to see the top of it, instead of directly viewing it as a side-view. Idk, I'm probably wrong so =)
Charlie Dayman
You are correct sir, the view should actually allow you to see a bit of the top. Looks like I was focusing so much on the back that I completely overlooked that, lol.
EDIT: Fixed because this is Chinatown, and you know the law. Thanks for pointing that out, Yun. I haven't done full landscapes in ages, so I'm still a bit rusty

No worries, Yun. I'm still a student and prone to silly mistakes that I might overlook.
And the law of Chinatown is about landscapes. You know this.
