Yeah, it's one of those times where you're halfway through the figure and realize something is off.

I'll have to check that game out sometime since my brother had nothing but good things to say about it. And your guess is as good as mine when it comes to what I might put into this piece.

And good news for you Tzu, I think I've got an idea brewing in my head for your ranger. I'm thinking... Flaming arrows here. Yep, you do have to play Dragon Age. If you love it (which you will) and want to rant about it, I'm here to listen/rant with you. 8)

Flaming arrows...? Flaming arrows??? I LUFF flaming (incendiary) arrows. Especially together with ignite arrows and splinter weapon...
So yeah, right down my alley, I totally embrace your idea.

All the pointed helmets and the general red/orange glow to the scene makes me think there's a Kanaxai hidden in the mess. Speaking of, a scene like this would be great to fill with cameos of other characters--something like Dynasty Warriors, depending on how serious a piece you intend to produce. All the same.

I'm kind of wondering how he's holding that hammer like that.

Like the new scene though, great sense of drama.

And exploding splinter weapon arrows are all sorts of awesome.

@Magik: That's a cool picture. It reminds me a lot of the artwork from that 80's movie "Heavy Metal" - I mean that in the best way possible of course.

@Invertation: Thanks for noticing the pointed helmets. Trying to sneak in a bit of that samurai headdress, particularly the ones that were adorned with deer and bull horns. As for the Dynasty Warriors reference, I'll be sure sneak that cheap bastard Lu Bu somewhere into the picture just for you.

@Widowmaker: I haven't really focused on the maul that much. I'm still sort of playing around with the hammer positioning. I want to give the impression that the maul's heavy weight is giving his arm a good stretch. Besides that, I still need to tilt it a bit so that it appears to rest on his upper back. Right now, it looks as if he's holding it with that arm alone.

eeh I'm no artist, and Iron Butted does look solid enough to pull it off .. but maybe if his other leg was raised instead (and his L leg straight, or back), his pose would be stronger, he'd seem more balanced ..

I see what you mean, so I'll keep playing around with the poses as I go along. In my mind, I kind of envisioned him standing with his left leg sort of propped up on a rock. That and I too like the idea that he's strong enough to swing about the club with relative ease.

I'd suggest bringing his arm forward more, pulled that far back would be pretty uncomfortable and, I suspect, the armour will interfere with balancing the maul across his shoulders.

Poor sod has to actually move it from that position at some point.

After toying around a bit with the arm, I ended up changing it so that he's now hoisting it over his shoulder rather than back. With the other position, the head of the maul got obstructed when I ended up moving the forearm forward. This stance works a bit better and shows more of the weapon.

Maybe the last WIP for the next few days. Bit of a busy weekend coming up. Anyways, I switched around the composition to put the viewer right in the throws of the marching soldiers clearing out the Afflicted.

The Imperial soldiers in the back went through a few different armor sets from the last WIP. At first I kept the same horned helmets and banners, but it ended up looking too similar to the samurai class. So I did a bit of a mix and match between the Guild Lord designs and Chinese dynastic warriors. Turned out pretty well.

A lot of work will be going into this one, but I'm looking forward to it.

Loooks sooo great Charly. Great background, love the moon and what you did to the soldiers outfit. Also I think this hammerstance is alot better and looks more natural. Great scene.

Finished with work earlier than expected and I don't have the motivation to start my AH essay due this week. Felt pretty motivated today and got a significant portion done in a short time. Almost finished the armor and also pushed the soldiers further back since I started to feel they appeared more foe than friend.

Getting there ever so slowly.

Well when it comes to situations like that, I would suggest just doing a lot of research on their techniques. Imitating their hand is a great way for picking up a certain style.

tried, prob gonna take a looong time to pull off though. i'd rather just form my own style, rather than just draw stuff that reminds people of other people's work.

True, though it sure is a nifty way of learning though. That's how I normally start out if I'm trying a new style. Eventually I ditch the idea of exact duplication and mix it in with my own style.

when i try to draw anything remotely humanoid it comes out hilariously deformed looking, it's quite funny. when i tried to draw the kid from the rubber johnny music video i couldn't stop laughing at the finished result.

Lol. In that case, a study in anatomy/proportions definitely helps. There's all sorts of methods to measure and compare the human figure with nothing but your eye and pencil. I'm sure some time with that will definitely benefit you if you get the chance.
