It's rather simple. Why play a game where your characters are going to look like crap unless you grind for very rare stuff? Does that mean I think anet should make all the drops common? no. What it means is they should up the drop rates on stupidly rare things a small bit and a bit more on the useless, yet fun game additions.
All excessive rare items do is drive away causal players because they feel they will never get said items and can't put in the time to grind grind grind for them.
Stupidly high title requirements should be reworked too. A few updates ago City of Heroes, for example, reworked some of their very grindy titles to make them much more reasonable to obtain. They still take a fair time investment but nowhere near what they used to and in a couple cases nigh unobtainable.
Games should be fun for all involved and excessive grinds is not fun. I'm very on the fence about buying GW2 because Anet hasn't shown any indication of changing their bad design philosophy and is spewing the same claptrap they spewed for GW. How often are they going to Nerf skills in GW2? every update like they seem to here? How about farms due to whatever grind they add in GW2? I'll be keeping an eye out to see what HoM adds to GW2, to see if any of that grind is worth it to do.
EDIT: I LIKED GW when it first came out and I LIKED all the campaigns too. I don't like anets excessive nerfing of stuff nor their pathetic drop rates. I own all 3 campaigns as collectors editions due to having enjoyed GW in general.
