April Fools 2011
Xiaquin
I'm so glad they did something big to liven things up, but I'm always sorry to hear from those with no sense of humor or willingness to let go from the norm and just have silly fun. I loved it and thought it was very well put-together.

I'm so glad anet is aware how much Kormir is annoying useless npc.

due to work obligations I don't think I'll be able to log in today but someone quoted Regina saying Corporal Bale will be in Embark Beach through the weekend. Is this Corporal Bale the funnel through which all the April Fools content goes through?
X Dr Pepper X
Lets get this straight.
I liked the Corporal Bane Terminator April Fool's day quest. It was fun and witty.
It is however, out of place as far as content goes.
They haven't yet fixed GW itself, and they add in totally irrelevant and frivolous things such as this? Why wouldn't I be upset?
Its like buying luxuries like XM Radio, a Sat Nav, and leather upholstery for a car that barely works instead of fixing the car first.
If the Dervish update took over a year (iirc), how long do you think they'll take to truly fix SF, SC, Rangers, Eles, Paras, HM, Elite Areas, and balance PvP properly?
Everybody who cannot acknowledge the fact that this takes away resources from the development of other projects in GW1 is a blind rabid fanboy.
You can disagree with me about the priorities of content introduction in this game, but this took away resources from more important things like profession balance. That is a fact.

Asia Skyly
Actually that is not a fact. None of us have any idea how that content came to be, Who worked on it, whether it was done in overtime, at the same time of other projects, while waiting for other projects, previously done years back, etc.
You are speculating and that, is an opinion.
Riot Narita
Wrong.
Events like April Fools come around every year. They are fixtures.
They Must Have New Content Every Year.
Work on GW Beyond, balancing, updates of every kind (except genuine emergency fixes)... must be fitted into the GAPS between such fixed events.
If priorities even come into it at all, these regular events come first. And that is as it should be. Resources are ALREADY commited to them. They are not taken away from other work, it's simply business as usual.
Oh, and LOL @ how broken you think GW is, in your mind. "A barely working car". Drama.

@ X_Dr_Pepper_X. Your analogy might work if you actually bought stuff after the initial game purchase that affected and broke gameplay. As far as I can tell, buying costumes does not affect gameplay (although I grant you, buying mercenaries may).
From a non-hardcore GW player's perspective, I don't think Guild Wars is a "car that barely works". I cannot dispute if there are balance issues, or issues with HM, or broken skills, mainly because I am a casual gamer, and my only criteria is, does any of this make the game too hard or too easy? So far, none of the changes have, but I reiterate, I am a casual gamer, so I may not be as affected as you are. But as a casual gamer, I appreciate these "frivolous" updates.
All I'm really trying to say is, there are those of us who think Arenanet is doing a good job with their content updates and only hope they keep 'em coming!

So I assume the people that don't like the content preferred the stick figures then?
Lots of people walking around in bunched up panties. Just sayin'.
And not aiming this at anyone in particular, but I'd rather be a blind fanboy than a pretentious gaming snob. When you add up all the numbers, you've gotten well more in game play than what you've paid for with no subscription. It's staggering the amount of entitlement some players feel they are due. Like ANET is their personal gaming butler at their beck and call. You bought the product. You played exactly the amount of gaming ANET was selling at that time. Anything else is extra. You don't like it? Close the program and find something new to do with your lives. To say you just didn't like the AF content is one thing. To say you don't like it because it takes away from new content ANET has absolutely no obligation to provide us is another.
What's even funnier is these same people would probably been even more vocal had ANET given us nothing at all. All the people that like to talk smack should form up. Find someone to front them some capital, and make a game to "show us how it should be done".
Thank you ANET. I am entertained.

What does the new build do? Does it make the quest any different?

Speaking of which, anyone feel like editing the timeline on wiki to include "1059 AE: Corporal Bane arrives from 270 years in the future to stop the Annihilator Golem from killing Sarah"?
Rage poster: "270 years? It clearly says he's only from 250 years in the future!"
Me: "Yes, but thats in the present, which is 1079 AE. When he goes back another 20 years to 1059 AE, it becomes 270."
Rage poster: "Oh..."

[QUOTE=RedDog91;5439534]Well, technically you were level 20 eleven years before pre-searing.
Well technically any time before the Searing takes place would be considered Pre-Searing would it not?

This is the kind of thing that happens when something is a collaborative effort... one person/team works on one part, another focuses on a different part, etc.
You have zero idea how the team(s) at ANet are assigned, who is resourced to do what, what projects are on all of their plates, how resources of time/equipment/development are allotted. But you're sure quick to tell everyone just how it should be done, and what an utter failure they are when they don't do it your way.
I can't wait to see the amazing MMO you are developing, with incredible content, constant updates, perfectly balanced skills and professions, all the bells & whistles with no subscription fees, no DLC, and cheaper than a single evening out for dinner & a movie. I'm sure it will be on the shelves next week, right?
*crickets chirp*
Yeah, that's what I thought.

But back then being level 20 wasn't a big deal. Look around, every Ascalonian soldier is level 20.
The Ascalon Army doesn't start rewarding people that reach level 20 until all these people die in the Guild Wars.
TIME PARADOX AVERTED.

You can't expect that a quest with a bunch of new enemies, new skills and new models only took a small amount of time. That is why some people would have preferred something small and cute rather than something like that.
Yes this event is fun, but in 3 days it's gone and all the work put in it will quickly become a distant memory (but I have a feeling that they are going to keep it, it won't be the first time that they keep something).

New location? No.
New enemies? No.
Cookie cutter enemy builds? Yep.
New skins? One.
New skills? Sure.
Yeah, looks like a whole lot of time was diverted. More time was likely put into the loading screen than anything else.

Haha
Also, everyone complaining about resources being 'wasted' on this...it's not like April Fool's Day is on a different date every year and they have to scramble to work on something like this. It's a single quest, with one model that does nothing but sit there (the Moahawk), one new skin, one loading screen, and skills that didn't have to be balanced against anything.
I agree with those saying that the complainers probably would have complained if we got nothing special this year. Some people just can't be pleased.

I enjoyed it immensely. Surely you find it pretty hilarious with all the witty humor and jokes! They could have done nothing at all but I'm glad they did. I wish the QQers would realize how much work it takes to do something like this, even just create a new model. I'm sure most of the staff could have been working on other things but that they took the time to entertain us is very generous and thoughtful.
Now if you'll excuse me I must... "Get to the choppah!!"

The enemies might now use new skins, but it's still new enemies, cookie cutter builds or not. And they have a little script : they don't start killing each other until you come close enough, so this quests wasn't just "okay let's take those 3 models, give them 6 skills, put them there and done". They also have to make sure that there aren't major bugs because it would be rather dumb to have a bug that prevents people for completing an event that only lasts a week end.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Anet should make a shootemup now and knock call of lack ops out of the park?

Thanks to this April Fools gag I now have a reason to play Arnocorps music instead of the normal game music. I'm so happy I could cry or bench press a truck.

Is there really any reason for complaining? The game does not change for anyone who cares not to participate. On a day dedicated to foolishness let fools reign.

Or maybe if you're walking around in pre-searing and get your leg blown off by one of the land mines that he randomly places everywhere. Those things are known to sit undisturbed for years and to maim/kill innocent people.
TheGizzy
And the way Gwen skips around sniffing that flower, following behind heroes... you just know she's going to trip one off... and we'll have wasted our time killing the Annihilator golem. Just wait!
Verene
Well, if she's going off following heroes around...they'll be the one to set off the mine and wind up missing legs. Gwen will be safe

How did we go from having a covenant corner stone tradition of a mass form change on April fools day to this lame ass terminator parody... you left most people saying "no prank!?!"... regurgitate some more amine and movie references... you haven't turned the game into a total joke yet john....

Added the Patience title track. A player's progress toward this title is based entirely on the length of time since the player last sought information about the Guild Wars 2 release date. I think to be called original it cant be related to a base line plot of something else....a lack of creativity is when you take things from other games and movies and make them your own ...this quest would be acceptable if it was something original....

It's an integral part of gaming writing, for crying out loud.
Edited to add: And you know, absolute kudos to ANet for picking such an appropriate tie-in. GW2... 250 years in the future... where the descendants of Gwen & Kieran have heroically helped save and preserve countless lives, cultures, etc. And a robot... a golem... being sent back in time to try and prevent the saviors of the future from ever being born. It is an IDEAL tie-in, on top of a damn MOAhawk appearing in Embark.

Wow... so you mean damn near every popular title in gaming is screwed? Because it's like there's some sort of "pop culture reference easter egg code of honor" that they pretty much ALL subscribe to. References to things like Princess Bride, nods to Star Trek or Star Wars or Babylon 5... Dr Who references... references to other popular games... parodies of other popular games with unique features...
It's an integral part of gaming writing, for crying out loud. |
Just not seeing the prank or the punchline here with the team choice... its like they just threw together some kinda side project someone was messing with for fun...
I think its pretty lame...you can think different...don't really care...
