Serious wow, I will have to really get cracking on mine if this is the standard if work

It's almost December, and I'm almost done with most of the real life commitments. Oooooh I can't wait to get started on my submission . *art starve*
Death By An Arrow
Anywho, back on topic: Valdis, that is looking really good! Really like the details in the face. The chest is also looking good. I feel like something is off in the shoulders... but I just cant pick out what is is.
Dobby; those sketches for the puppets looked awesome. Why were they so top heavy, where the heads solid the whole way through?
Since they are puppets you could leave the head a little hollow, and support it with your fingers. Might help the problem (unless you found another solution)
And for me. STILL NOTHING. my laptop is going to take two weeks to repair, so I moved my desktop to a location in our house with internet. So I have internet now, might start doing research this week for ideas.

Yeah, I sorry about that D:
The sketch doesnt really depict correctly what I was drawing... XD
There are skulls on the shoulders, and I've actually colored on of the with the base colors. Its a metal spaulder that has skulls and such. So it looks right, just not in the sketch :]
I've also added in a good amount of detail to the chest since posting it up.

@Thistle: I just asked Regina on MSN about the MKG mini, and she said this:

Hi Regina
I'm writing to you in regards to the Wintersday Art Workshop on GWGuru, and one of your winners of the Halloween contest, Thistle Xandra (hers was the Danika costume entry).
Since I have you on my MSN, she asked me if I could ask you about donating her Mad King Thorn miniature (which she didn't accept because of the release form) to the workshop as a prize?
Regina Buenaobra said (2:06 PM)
I beleive, legally, the prizes are non transferable, even if the winner forfeits the prize.
Livia said (2:06 PM)
ahh, ok I'll let her know! Thanks for the answer
Regina Buenaobra says (2:07 PM)
If she wanted to claim the prize, she could then donate it to the Guru thing.
Livia says (2:08 PM)
She said she didn't accept the prize release form because she had to give her SSN and she wasn't comfortable in writing it down and sending it over the internet. (She blamed it on her pregnancy that makes her a bit paranoid ^_^ ).
Livia says (2:09 PM)
So I guess the mini will then go to the next winner in line. Hope this helps a bit
EDIT: Sorry the way I put the "blame on the pregnancy", it's one of those days where the English language has a way of eluding me with the proper words and terms. >_<

CAN U ASK HUR WHEN PRIZES WILL BE DISTRUBITED pls? :c

Real life attacked me again! I'm ALMOST signed up for University this Spring. I'm waiting on them to look over a few things and I will hopefully get my student login so I can sign up for classes this week. D: I haven't had much, if any time to decide what I really want to do for the workshop. I still would like to write but I haven't written anything in so long. /excuses

Ok I PM Pink Day Queen to meet her ingame, to tired now to read what exactly is going on, but she has my IGN and i also asked her to PM me hers... i will check in again tomorrow when i had some sleep...

@Marshy: ofc I can ask ^_^

Everything is going insane IRL, I really hope I'll have time to make my entry soon, and be able to finish! I hope Anet won't have a super short deadline like the Halloween one was, otherwise I can't do it.

nice pickle. Whatever the reasons, I agree with your decision, Thistle.
I'm really busy again, didn't even have time to touch a pen over the weekend >.< I'm quite looking forward to working on my entry some more, let's see how this week goes.
@Valdis: looks cool, but I think his arms are very long...

Heh, only took me 16 days to find this workshop. Not that I've been into GW for weeks... I'm not having much work with school, I might just get something done but I can't say for sure. It may just as well be so that I'll show up in a couple of months for the next time.
Sign me up anyway;
Hey, Thistle! I want to participate in the workshop!

Idea for entry: vague, very vague if anything
Art form type: traditional

Good Eve, travellers! I have a quest for thee in the form of this picture:
Let me elaborated; I still can NOT figure out how to adjust any of my settings for my tablet with my computer.
First problem: Those damn annoying ripples when i click! They only occur with my pen, not my mouse. I can not change the properties of my pen because the box is greyed out. There are no options available to change this in either the Pointer/Mouse or Wacom Tablet settings (in the control panel). You can see examples of such behaviour encircled; those are the best print screens I could get :| The left one starts small, and expands to the size of the other two in a ripple (thing dropping a stone in a still puddle). This did not/does not occur on my laptop, and never has.
Problem 2: Everywhere I look, I hear people talking about how changing your pressure in hand can be set to change the opacity/amount of 'ink' applied; just like with a pencil. However, I've never had this occur with the settings always shown in tutorials and such. This hazard triangle (circled in yellow) appears to be warning me that something is wrong.
What is wrong, and how can I change it? An example of how my pen works can be seen... below that. A soft, almost not touching the tablet pressure to a hard, drilling into the tablet pressure. Provides a smooth, even line. No change whatsoever.
If you cant see it is Shape Dynamics-->Size Jitter--> Control:Pen Pressure.
Could anyone help me? I have a feeling the second one is why I have such a hard time adjusting to from traditional to digital, and the first is just REALLY annoying. :/

I've always wanted a tablet but never really went and got one. Been putting my munnies into camera stuff instead.
I think I have an idea... Koss holding a snowflake, looking puzzled. Gonna need a high-res closeup of his face.

@death - may seem obvious but have you tried re-installing the software? Second I would search forums/sites for updates/bug fixes.
I'll try and enter this time permitting, what closing date are we looking at?

Death, that's really strange... which tablet have you got? I have a Graphire, and my menu looks nothing like that. I also can't say I've ever experienced problems like this, although I had to download a new pen driver at some point because the old one decided to stop working. Perhaps that would help... alternatively, have you tried actually asking the manufacturer?
Tommy's
DBAA. Your pen pressure isn't working. What tablet do you have? I think I didn't have my pen pressure working from the first second either, I had to modify it in the wacom part, not the windows/mac part about tablets. You can always try installing the drivers again, otherwise I'll dive into getting that think rocking!

Wanted to give a big thank you to AryaBladedancer for a 100k and 50 lockpick donation and Siraena Vairidean for a 39k donation (to make the current gold amount in the award pool a nice splittable number. Thanks for checking the pool *hug*)

24 hours after the official GW Wintersday contest deadline (not announced as of yet, but approximately late Dec)
EDIT: please see new deadline in OP

Hi everyone, quick announcement!
Anet has announced there will be no official Wintersday contest this year, but the GW Guru Wintersday workshop will continue with some wonderful donations from Anet (will be announced later, please no speculating in this thread) Please continue to submit your entry forms, ideas, WiPs, and constructive feedback and questions. Please expect some minor changes to the Workshop over time as we adjust to Anet's surprise announcement
11/30/2011 - Quick changes:
1) The Wintersday Extraordinaire Award will be modified so that instead of being a winner/HM in the official contest, an awardee must have been a nominee for the People's Award.
2) Those wanting to be a judge must have a recommendation from one of the current judges.
3) Workshop deadline will now be at 12:00PM PST on the day of the last Wintersday Finale event (approximately Jan 1, however this will be finalized when Wintersday is officially announced)
4) Winners will be tentatively announced at the workshop party and in this thread 2 weeks after the deadline.

No Wintersday contest? what the heck? o_o BLASPHEMY! *reads link* Oh, they're giving the workshop prizes? Iiiinteresting. I shall revert the previous cry to: "Blasphemy!"

Because copy pasting last years format is that big of a hassle. Hell they didn't even take time to take out the spelling mistakes then. But I guess GW2 is keeping them occupied pretty well Well, a shame, but we still have this!
Death By An Arrow
Wow; if I didn't have motivation to start already I REALLY need to get my idea factory working again... this weekend. >.< Too many tests and labs due tomorrow and friday to worry about.
But these prizes, so excited! Glad there are still reindeer tonics :3 Thanks again to Anet for the wonderful donations ^^
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back to my technical issues;
for those who asked: I've got a Bamboo Fun tablet. I currently have the most up-to-date driver (I downloaded it directly from the Wacom website the day of the halloween workshop party) for my tablet, but I don't know if its the same driver for pens. There was only really one option for my specific set up, so I figure its all in one.
My Wacom menu doesn't give me any... options to adjust pen pressure and the like, as far as I can tell. the 'program' i guess (as listed in the start menu) is 'Bamboo Preferences'. Thats for the menu you aren't seeing (the one Morag is likely thinking of). The one I show is my windows tablet settings.
Im not sure if its the drivers though; I had the same problem with my laptop when I first got my tablet two years ago aswell (technically still have the same problem, actually); I thought this was what everyone was referring to when they meant pressure sensitivity. Thats why I could never believe there are the 1248 or so different levels of pressure... when all I got was 1. LOL
I think I'll contact the manufacturer, unless someone thinks they might have an idea of what it is as of right now.
Also, no one touched on the ripples; would that be something I should ask wacom about? I feel like its a setting on my computer and not my pen.

If you need another Judge...I am more than willing (and with a BA in art--I should put it to use, right?)...let me know. (you can ask any of the currently listed judges if they wish to 'back' me)
Thistle Xandra
I'll add you to the panel, Cosyfiep. I'm assuming since you're a mod one of the other judges who are guru mods will recommend you XD
cosyfiep
...and I believe that both admins listed would back me (and I might also have a ton of stuff to donate---love cleaning out my mules!!)...off to move stuff to mules for donation---
Thistle Xandra
haha, i'm chatting with them on skype so yes, you're officially reccommended! (btw, of the tons of stuff you're planning on donating, my mules beg you to check prizes and award pool to donate stackable stuff XD Thanks so much for the donation! *hug*)

A lot has gone on since I last checked up! I was just drawing some more puppets today+the resurrection shrine+a pathetic attempt at a wind rider from memory+dwayna+grenth
it is all going ok, and I think I have got to grips with the storyline (although I don't want to reveal too much) dwayna and grenth will both snuff it
So glad that the deadline has been pushed into he FAR future (the winners will be announced exactly on my birthday!!) I now can procrastinate accordingly.
@death by an arrow, I'm sorry that your pen doesn't work I have really got off to a bad start+middle+ending with technology and pretty much all that my computer will do anymore is play GW. (I feel and understand your computer pain)
Will arenanet announce the winners of the official GW site, or will it just be here?

@Dobby I was thinking of going traditional for this piece anyways, so I'm not in too big a hurry to get this fixed. To think I thought this was how all tablets functioned for the last two and a half years... /doh.
And arenanet will not be announcing winners on their website, as per usual, so it will all be done in this thread. However, if you follow the link thistle posted, you may notice that they will be supporting the workshop with their own prizes. So, the 'official' contest is still happening in essence; the prizes are just be distributed here and judging isnt down by anet.
>.> its essentially the step just below being an 'official' anet contest. Anet supported unnofficial contest?

The GW Guru Wintersday Workshop is a project sponsored by fans of Guild Wars and, as such, is a guild wars community supported contest. However, being a fansite, we are fortunate that Anet is willing to donate *some* prizes to GW Guru so that we can give them away in this workshop. This workshop is not officially affilliated with Anet. Phew.

Noes! Well I guess I'm just not gonna win any place on the official contest period. On a brighter side, I still get to have fun over here at Nolani .
But now that there won't be people to take off the finished craft items off my hands, I'm not sure if I'll be doing crafts. I'll have to rethink about what my entry will be.
What to do~, what to do~, hm hm h~m hm h~m (in Jingle Bells tune)

Despite my fear of criticism and my lack of artistic skills I decided to take the plunge and enter one of these art contests for the first time.... here goes:
Hey, Thistle! I want to participate in the workshop!
Name: IGN: Lady Ariela Iceblue, Guru name: Iceblue
Idea for entry:
Idea one: Something with either a polar bear, or a panda or a penguin (what?)... to bring animal extingtion awarness to the fore.
Idea two: Tyria being held by one of the gods in their hands? or on someones shoulders [ ... my theory is that tryia is a planet, and not a flat disk or on the back of a turtle ]
Art form type: Combo - Digital and Watercolor. I got some cool inktense water color pencils and will use digital manipulation of screen shots to give me outlines to draw in. I think I'll feel like I'm back in kindergarten....
