Your grandpa gives you a "better bargain: for his horse then any other horse on the market, and you still complain that your not getting his saddle also?

Hence i say "looking a gift horse in the mouth"
Let me ask you this - if a horse cannot be ridden, is it then really such a bargain?

If Anet says, "We hear you - we think it's in everyone's best interest that we sell a code key to increase the number of slots/storage in your accounts as a separate add on from the chapters." I would then go out and buy the saddle.

Speaking for myself, I'm not looking for a bargain. I vastly prefer paying top dollar (euros really in my case) for something that suits me perfectly before paying a low price for something not quite there. (Within reasonable bounds of course.) Playing GW was a cheap gaming year for me, I'll grant you that.

ya, every man (or woman) has his opinion. I would also pay top dollar for high end gaming. I just saw guild wars as high end gaming, and have been grateful i didnt have to pay up the ying yang for it.

and... Hanok Odbrook... if asking a-net to sell extra character slots is the argument, then i would agree. I think if they're capable of doing it, then it would be a great idea. That's a lot different that asking for them for free. I guess i figured you wanted something different when you shot me down for saying most people here are looking a gift hourse in the mouth.

Well, let me put it this way:

I love my grandpa to death - that's a really good horse he bred and the price is more than right. However, it still doesn't quite meet my needs, but I can work with what it has.

Now, before I buy that horse from grandpa, I hear that some guy in the next town is raising a horse of similar standards, and when it's mature, he plans on selling it for as much as grandpa is selling his horse, or perhaps for a small amount more. Difference is, that guy will be throwing the saddle in for no extra charage.

Sorry gramps, I still love ya, but that other horse will suit my needs better, and I can really wait until the time that other horse is ready to be bought. Now if you want to get ahead of the game, and throw in that saddle for free, or even for a few bucks more, then we got ourselves a deal.

That's really all I am saying.

i guess if there are other horses around that you'd rather have. I havnt seen anything compairable. but at the same time i doubt a-net is gonna drop the ball just cause somebody uses that tactic on them. "i'll go somewhere else if you dont do this" ?? it's just my opinion, but that probably wont get them to budge.

I like to focus on just a few serious characters, and I think 4 is my happy limit. At the moment I'm only using 3 slots... my necromancer, ranger and mesmer. I have a slot free for PvP that I'll use for a ritualist.

By linking Factions I'll have 2 extra slots to for a PvP slot and a testing slot for the training grounds, or just messing around with the character builder

Well, I even said before, that right now GW is the only fish in this particular pond. If anyone thinks that will always be the case, they are wrong. I know Sony, or one of the other devs already has a sub-free MMO in development with a planned release in 2007, last I heard. On on the contrary, Anet will not drop the ball because of that looming competition. I make a living in Retail, I seen companies come and go exactly because they did not listen to their customers and someone else offered what they did not. That's not hardball - that's basic consumerism.

Let's pose this question - if Anet and Sony both developed GW exactly the same, but Sony offered more storage and character options with their version, who do you think would have had the most sales?

If Anet somewhere along the lines offers more character slots for free. That indeed would be what I consider to be a gift, as enough slots for each prime was not part of the promise when the game was developed. It certainly was stated as a possible future update, but we all knew going in that it wasn't part of that original cost.

Now that we've had some play time under our belts, we are simply expressing what our desires are to increase the fun factor of GW, which is something all of us dedicated players have been doing all along. Some suggestions have been implemented, others have not. This is simply one more to add to the pile, that many of us dedicated Gwers believe will improve the game for the future and keep well ahead of any competition that may come along.

Anet. Everyone knows whatever Sony touches turns to crap.

They're giving away Everquest now. You couldn't pay me to play it.

Star Wars: Galaxies managed to destroy it's base and turn off new players with it's ridiculous reboot that actually made the game worse.

Matrix Online: Need I say more? Did anyone even play this?

Planetside: Well, the good news is apparently you can play this baby subscription free for a year. The bad news is, I've never even heard of this Space MMORPG.

Now let's look at NCSoft (since comparing Anet to Sony is unfair):

Guild Wars: over 1 million players and counting

City of Heroes/City of Villians: The only Superhero MMORPG currently out there. Nice niche.

AutoAssault: Had the pleasure of playing the Beta a little. Wouldn't buy it myself, but a nice little game if you enjoy driving cars and shooting things.

Tabula Rasa: Now, this isn't out yet, but it sounds interesting: A MMORPG shooter produced by "Lord British" Garriott.

If NCSoft would charge a flat fee and let you play any of these games, I think they could rival WoW in subscribers.

(Oh yeah, I left off Lineage II. Have no idea how it's doing...)

this is not gasoline or even flammable

i read that the streaming technology was an NCsoft exclusive so unless Sony has a non infringing equivalent they have a small disadvantage.

most importantly do you doubt for a moment that if/when Sony actually does come out with an equivalent game that NCsoft wont say something to the effect of

*i will match that offer and throw in incentive x*

competition wins for all of us

well how many times has someone said,
'oh this is the item, heres its price on the net, can you match it, or better it, cause if you can, i will buy from you rahter than off the net?'

i get that all the time at work, and i guess that might be what mr odbrook is trying to get across.

personaly, i would like to know more about this linking process...do i still have to get a chap1 charater accended to transfer them if i link?
will i still have to finish a special quest to move a chap2 charater to the prophecies areas?
if i DO NOT link, will i have no way of connecting the two areas together, ether at a later dat, or if they choose to alow un-linked games to at least, on machines that have BOTH versions installed, the quest type way to access the other sided content?
how about chapter3? will i have to do somehthing similar to accention to get THEM to move past chap2 to chap3?

if we acept that there would only be 2 slots extra to EVERY linked chapter from now on, and only 2 classess per add on, what if they suddenly gave us 3 new classes, would they then give us still 2 slots?

and another thing....why not alow players to purchase cd keys online, without the farting about of buying boxes and cd's? (or have they got this and i dont know about it?)

Well, no one knows for sure, but from what I understand as long as your Chapter 1 characters have access to Lion's Arch, they should be able to sail to Cantha. (There might be a quest involved, who knows?)

I doubt they will release 3 classes in one expansion. If anything, I expect the opposite to happen: Less new classes as the expansions roll on (how many new professions can there possibly be?), and more Slots to compensate. Again, though, pure conjecture.

cd keys for sale are available rayea, i just didn't consider them because the cost compared with a boxed version was 30 - 40% more and I have the patience to await the arrival of the box after ordering.

And loviatar, the streaming technology isn't monopolised by NCSoft, many other companies use a comparable form of it. The only thing they have is that there is nobody else with the exact same streaming technology. Example of other people with streaming technology is Valve with their steam technology.

actually, i meant that, rather than buying a copy, or downloading....
when i already have a cd copy of the game
(replying to lovitar)

and surely, if they take out the price of packaging, cd and all the rest, its perfectly feasable to ether creditcard (for those lucky enought to have one) or simply pay a slightly cheaper fee to a game shop for a leetle plastic card with some silver scratch off panel that had a single game cd code...

they could do the same with slots, and make cash..but if they were worried about so many slots per single account, limit it to no more than 10 when you do not take the expansions into consideration...
therfore...

4 original slots+6 plastic card paid for slots+2 per expansion..= happy a net and happy customers...

i mean, can anyone complain about having up to 10 as a maximum if they so chose to purchace them i mean, so joe bloggs had 10 slots....what he does with them is none of my buisness, be it 10 pvp or 10 pve....or a mix of both....(for those that have interests in both...sometimes, people get attatched for reasons other than class....apart from runescape, i have an anita blake character on all my mmo games, does the slot limits mean i should simply deleat them just to be able to make a wamo to finish the bloody game? course not, its a choice after all, not an order)

If you purchase Factions, you will be able to travel to the new land, Cantha, with your Ascended characters from Guild Wars (original Prophecies campaign). Inventory items, skills, and other possessions and attainments from Guild Wars remain yours and remain useable within Guild Wars Factions.
Aside from the fact that Ascension is a relatively easy and painless process, they also said, before Sorrow's Furnace came out, that -it- was for Ascended characters only. More often than not, when Anet says 'Ascended', they just mean level 20.

well kakume, i hope to the server gods your right, cause where as some players have no trouble whatsoever managing to accend, im in the LFG group...

even resorted to a notihng but squishes group to see if it would work better since the castes all stay in same group...it does, but im not fast enough yet..but im getting to 10 to 5 mins left and getting deaded, so maybe i just need to shift myself into high gear and keep trying...
(considering that when i took the tanks along, we usually died between 15 and 10 mins left on the clock....and often didnt get even 2 crystals...now i get 2 crystals as standard, unless they get a lucky kill in early and beat me to a pulp...maybe i should use a candycane, assuming they still work hehe)

and i realy hate to even consider paying someone to rum me thru..i havent yet, and i never will...*although friends helping me out is ok, and if i happen to get something nice they need that i dont, well, thats just friendly to give them it...hehe*

im starting to feel like daniel jackson....^^

from Alex Weekes

from GW

Guild Wars, in contrast, is based around your skill as a player. Our maximum level is twenty and you hit that very quickly, after about 20-30 hours of play. ,We call that 'The Point of Ascension'. Almost all of the content in the game and in the future Chapters is only available to Ascended characters, which means we don't have to worry about providing different levels of content. All the good stuff will be available to everyone. It's not our intent to force people onto the levelling up treadmill, so the level cap in Guild Wars is almost meaningless.

A note for Anet, -

Please, give us a slot for every primary profession plus 1 for PvP... --2 linked slots for new content and 2 new professions is fine - if you give us a default 7 slots

Oh, I intend to get Factions---in fact there will be at least 3 copies of it bought to match the three copies of GW currently played in the household by husband, son and myself. We don't PvP although we're taking babysteps into the GvG world and, as someone said, a lvl 20 can find themselves in PvP anyhow. BUT to experience all the primary professions, I've already had to 'retire' characters for the room to do so (I'll admit to over-flowing one space on eldest son's acct). For instance, my original mesmer (who did not Ascend but was in the Desert) retired so my warrioress could come play. She finished the game and retired so the mesmer's little 'sister' could be invited in and is now Ascended (and much more powerful than her older sister thought about). But I'd still like to rebuild a warrior. Can't since I have a ranger, a necro, a monk and a mesmer. Four characters out of a six primary possibility. Decisions? Yes. Should it really be that necessary? No.

Throw in GW's 1.5-2 mil and the other prolly 1-2 mil from the other games.

This makes NCSOFT OWN THE WORLD! (Not really, but they are extremely sucessful)

Okay. First I'd like to start off this post by apologizing for being way too lazy to read all of these 300+ posts. But I have a few questions that maybe some patient person could answer for me. (after excusing me for my laziness that is.)

1. If I get Factions, link it to my existing account, I get 2 additional slots for a total of 6, correct?

2. Now I remember reading that if you get the collectors edition of Factions you get an additional character slot, amongst all the other cool goodies. Now if I link the CE of Factions to my existing account, do I get a total of 7 slots?

3. Or is it just one slot for the regular version and 2 slots for the CE?

I don't blame you for not reading the thread, it's really just one big rant!

1. Yes.

2. Unconfirmed. This would be super cool, but I doubt it.

3. No, it's definately 2 slots for regular ed. (according to Gaile). The CE may or may not have an additional bonus slot (for 3 total)... but that's just a rumor.

It was a bad example to use Sony - I just simply threw them out there because they are one of the biggies in the MMO field, just substitute any reliable dev in their place for that comparision. However, they are a good example of what can happen if a dev does not keep up the standards of the genre. Better analogies would be the AMD/Intel processor wars, or the Nvidia/ATI gpu wars. Each of these companies continues to raise the standard with each new release. The MMO devs will have to do the same thing in order to not only survive, but succeed. We can see what happens when a dev such as Sony does not.

WOW pretty much was the standard for MMOs prior to GW. Anet raised the bar last year when they put GW on the market. Now, all future MMOs must be developed based on that new standard if they want to survive, and all the current ones must rethink their stratagies if they want to continue to succeed in the market. The pressure to do more increases for Anet since they were the ones to raise the standard to a higher level - they must now continually raise the standard with each new chapter, otherwise GW will be seen as becoming stale and Anet will suffer Sony's fate.

That's really unnecessary. Quite frankly, it's a good business decision in the short term, but long term, they will need to increase the number of slots to match the number of primes before someone else beats them to the punch with a new game.

The only way for us to get more slots, sooner rather than later, is to post our desires here without flaming or being nasty. Unlike Blizzard or Sony, the devs at Anet do listen and take our suggestions and desires to heart. Like I said in a prior post - I am satisfied with the two extra slots, but not happy about it. I would like to see a future update or chapter that brings the number of slots in line with the number of primes, free would be great, but I would be willing to pay a nominal fee for the option as an add-on.

Anet has done a lot of right things with GW, which is why I am going to get the next Chapter. Again, had it been 8 total slots for linked accounts, I would have had no hesitation about buying two copies (one CE) for both accounts that I have, plus as long as they keep the standards up, I would have been a supporter for life. Right now, though, I will continue to play while waiting to see who the next dev is to raise the bar to the next level - anyone want to venture a guess as to who will have the next great sub-free MMO?

I don't think so. It's not in the official FAQ, and it's too good to be true (that would be like selling additional slots). But if ANet is reading this thread and still considering this option, I guess it's important to point out that many players would be eager to buy a collector edition for this nifty extra slot.

well I am not pleased with this. I don't find it normal that when you need to pay alot for a game like this, you will only get 2 character slots...

sry, but its not normal when I need to pay for a game 50 euros (i know its not confirmed but here in belgium it will be around that price) and the game is then that limited... I wanted to start with a necro after assassin and ritualist... but we only get 2 xtra slots...

GuildWars is atm the only game I play, its just perfect imo, but A.net you just changed my oppinion about you guys. Why do you guys only give 2 xtra slots? is it because you need server space? Well you should have tought about this earlier then, you can't expect ppl to be happy when they need to pay alot of money for only 2 xtra slots

I want 1 slot each profession thats 8 slots, is that to much to ask for? I had in my mind of buying every campaign, every single one.

sry for double post, but I've just red this

Yes you are right that ppl of A.net listen to what we are saying, but not about this topic, ppl have been asking this for 8 months maybe, to have more character slots and now at the moment they still didn't listen to us.
They've just added 2 more, how do they want to expect to stay alife with all those campaigns when they just shatter our dreams...

After reading all the posts I have come to the following conclusions, see what you think:

1.) The annoyed/happy split appears to be slightly weighted to the annoyed side, but not by as much as I would have thought.

2.) No matter how hard you guys try you are not going to get either side to change its opinion.

3.) Anet are not going to suddenly change their minds this close to release & add 2 slots for the linked game.

4.) You may as well accept this and get on with your lives.

Thanks for reading..

I think the point is that many people thought they would be getting 4 slots with Factions. The were disappointed that they only had 4 slots to begin with, but that disappointed was eased by the thought that eventually they would have enough slots to play all primaries.

The news that there are only 6 total slots by merging with Factions just, if you excuse the expression, crushed their dreams.

I don't think they are idiots for wanting more ways to play the game they enjoy. I think it's a valid complaint, and personally, I can't understand why people would argue AGAINST having more slots?

I mean, does anyone here want LESS slots? "Please Anet, 2 slots is too many. Give me less or I won't buy the game."

The only reason this got into a flame war, is some people (like myself at a few points in this thread) love Guild Wars so much that we'll defend against every complaint like it's a personal attack against us.

What we have to realize is such complaints aren't personally against you, they address a real concern, and people calling anyone "idiots" doesn't help anything.

in the polls (plural) posted earlier people on another thread on another site said the reason the *i wont buy unless i get 4 slots* result was so high (17.x %) was to show AnetNCsoft how much business they would lose if they didnt cave in to demands.

most of them will buy it but are hoping to scare Anet/NCsoft into giving more (as stated by one of them)

people..........

we got by with 4 slots and played way too many hours to complain about crushed hopes and we will suddenly vanish. (some will but not that many overall)

i look forward to taking my existing characters on a whole new set of adventures in a strange land and trying out the new professions in the new slots given to us.

and by chapter 3/4 if you havent found 2 professions you cant do without giving you one slot for each profession you use even part time you are in the tiniest minority.

that will be 10 to 12 professions fully decked out and unlocked and expert in its use.

a casual/even medium hard core gamer would be hard pressed for that timewise.

athough it probably wont happen for a while, i'll bet a-net gives the option to buy a key that'll allow 2 extra character slots. (this would probably be max) There's no need for anymore than that, and that would keep everyone up to par even through the next chapters. But whatever they choose to do, this game will still top my list, and i'll enjoy factions just like i enjoyed the first chapter. They've proved themselves, and i would say other companies have a lot to do to catch them.

I dont mind having only 6 slots, however i would like the skills that i have unlocked to stay unlocked for all of my characters, not just pvp.

So, if you make a new character you would get all the skills you unlocked automatically?

I guess the reason for this is some balance in PvE, but since you can get runners to get your Elites early anyway...

Implementing this would make Deleting characters a much more attractive option.

I think what he means is that you get those skills wich you have unlocked on other characters when you ascend or when you complete all missions or something like that. I am of the same idea I hate unlocking skills 3 times just because I want to PvP with my PvE characters.

anyways this is off topic, make another topic about this issue

It is true that anet looks at the official / elite forums for the community response but they look at a ALL the official elite fourms sites for true feed back.

Be curious to see how the other forums are faring on this topic.

For me I'm conent with two, I think they made this choice out how many can we give that we can afford to keep our business model (no fee). Do I want more, yes, but if I don't, I fine with the way it is.

Anet from the start indicated at least 1 slot, maybe more, but that's about it.

I can see the view of 4 slots per game and why people could feel cheated, but also see the cost on anet end to maintain (say 75% of user base getting Factions - 750,000 accounts X 2 vs 750,000 x 4) on there end with no monthly fee and with chapter 2, they set the tempo for future chapters (already in development). 3 Chapters * 4 slots = 12 slots for 10 jobs (if they add two more like c2 did).

They indicated there looking in to a "delevery system" for charcters and seeing how much server back end Final Fantasy XI has to deal with the auction house / delvery system, I can see why Anet wants to limit where they can. When FFXI was hit with DOS attacks, the player search function and the auction house system (linked to accounts for transactions) where the 1st to be shut off to keep there servers from failing.

I do respect other views but here is mine and I will be getting the CE versions of factions when it comes out.

Just for discussions sake, you know what? I could probably get by with just 1 slot for the whole game, if they allowed me to change primary as well as secondary class.

Of course this is not really an option. But just thinking about it, I have unlocked a lot of skills with just my main character by changing secondary and going out and getting their elites, etc as well as buying skills that can't be obtained from the low level quests I already did that can't be repeated. I did however do the low level quests that are class specific.
