I don't know if this has been said, but for x/ele or ele/x take Iron Mist BUT DON'T USE IT
Doppel will cast this on you immediatly, thus making you invincible for its duration
all other spells should be damage OTHER THAN LIGHTNING. If its lithning, it goes through Iron Mist. Doppel should fall easily.

Used GB as a W/N combined defy pain, when my health hit 90hp I used GB, doppel already used Defy Pain and as soon as that went off he died.

For beating doppelganger on HM, my warrior uses the w/rit UW solo build. Works like a charm

For elementalist, just hit meteor while the double is casting meteor shower, then drop your own shower on him. Works, I did it a month ago.

For warriors in hm jsut bring glads defense, riposte, deadly riposte and the necrosis.
For assassins. go a/r and bring like 2 spirits or more. He'll waste like +5 seconds for each spirit trying to cast them. In that time just keep attacking him with skills.

Deathly Swarm, Savage Shot
Max your Marksmanship so you can both utilize your bow and Savage Shot to their maximum efficiency. Your dopple will spend nearly all battle trying to cast Deathly Swarm on you, and with it's 3 second cast time as well as the 3 second recharge time, it's both easily interruptible and easily spammable (just not by you). As soon as you see your dopple start charging one up, hit Savage Shot for a smooth 40-60 damage. I was running a 13^50 20/19 bow so I was obviously getting some help from there, but most of your damage will be from Savage Shot, which at 12 Marksmanship (which it should be, higher with runes) will add 25+ damage to your attack. During the downtime in between his casts, just use regular attacks, not Deathly Swarm (because doing that would result in him Savage Shotting you, 0bvsly~). The battle should be over in 30 seconds and you should easily maintain over 50%-60% health.
Regrets if this was posted on an earlier page. I just ascended my R/N today and wasn't going to bother reading 16 pages of comments just to make sure this wouldn't be a duplicate post. =\

or you can use a pet..lol..he does not have any pet, so stack up on pet skills and a pet and kill your duplicate..lol

Did not change my builds i ran at all to defeat him:
Warrior: Shock Axe
Ranger: Burning Arrow
Necro: Anti melee,dont remember exactlly
Fun thing is that he is to stupid to acctully spike with shock axe bar, interputing he is nice at, however a savage shoot on my burning arrow wont do him any good, since i will interupt his heals instead , gives me a bigger atvantage + arrows are easy to avoid. Necro was the easiest, didnt even take dmg i belive. He attacks, i block, stuff triggers, he dies.
Havn't done it on my monk, yet, but i do belive i will have to change my ZB-bar quite a bit =D

i killed the dopple with prot spirit,spirit bond, scourge sacrifice,rip enchantment,offering of blood , awaken the blood in HM ,, he just sac himself to death

It was the easiest fight for my ranger, Just used quick shot and let my pet attack. After reading all the forums about players saying it was hard I though i got off easy. Lasted about 10 seconds for me.
And the kicker is i just stood there, the whole time.

As for the expansion classes, the Ritualist is as easy as the necro. Just bring Vengeful Weapon and Vengeful Was Khanhei, also if you have monk secondary use Reversal of Damage. Makes it a pretty quick fight, if you can call it that since you don't attack.

i cant freaking beat him on my mesmer. i tried all the build suggested here, and none of them work. im not too good at strafeing, so idk how im supposed to do it, ne other suggestions for how to do it w/o the empathy trick? im a me/mo btw

I have a N\E20 and after about a dozen tries at trying to kill my doppleganger using offensive force and utterly failing in frustration, I found this forum. But none of the "recipies of success" found here worked or even came close. (Maybe the developors fixed the game, I dunno.)
But the idea of having the doppleganger hurt itself more than it hurts you is valid. So I just equipped two spells (that I never used once but the doppleganger did use) that would hurt it but have no affect on me as long as all I did was attack with my max damage staff weapon.
The two spells I equipped (but never used) were:
Offering of Blood (elite spell)
Defile Flesh

i killed my dopple at level 16 using an axe warrior.. my skills were
cyclone axe, dismember, exicutioners strike, cleave(elite), brutal weapon, healing signet, char animal and "watch youself" ...
she was dead within 2 minuites

dont know if it has been posted but for ele put iron mist in first slot and damage skills in the rest, he will cast iron mist and make you invincible while you pound away on him

Warrior dopple in hard mode did not use frenzy against me and it was the only skill in my skill bar.
Auspicious parry, riposte, and deadly riposte however worked like a charm. Swing once to charge parry and then activate. Spam ripostes as they come up. Don't swing at him unless you need to charge parry, so he'll be swinging at you and battering himself on you frequently.
The easiest method though is straight out of wiki. Spiteful Spirit, Insidious Parasite, and Enfeeble. Use this as a secondary necro. Cast in that order and then do nothing else. Collect bonus.

But for an ele:
Glyph of Sacrifice+Flare,, doppel will u use Glyph, u just stand there and flare him to death. 15 sec or so

my ele all i did was arcane echo meteor shower, dodge his as he gets pummeled by both of yours, then fireball and flare will finish him, fire storm optional xD
my necro was complicated but i did do it in hm with him, i used a perfect storm bow because i had one, apply poison, 7 ranger spirits, slice of pumpkin pie, and some GG. all you do is apply poison and eat pie as soon as it starts and bow him to death, easy as that no needs to reapply apply poison because it wastes time and you dont need it since he will almost be dead anyway.
EDIT: sometimes it may take a few tries with luck with hits etc... oh yea and take superios off if you use any and get as much health as you can but dont go crazy over it :d

YOU CAN BRING PETS INTO THE FIGHT WITH THE DOPPLEGANGER.
This is bar-none the easiest way to defeat him. You don't have to dodge stuff, you don't have to have timing, you do not have to have a bunch of hard to get skills. You can be the worst player in Guild Wars and still beat that guy. All you need is a pet and a bar of skills that you can only use with your pet. I strongly urge anyone with a Prophecies character to choose a ranger secondary before leaving pre-Searing for this reason.
