Male Players playing Female Characters?
Yanman.be
All my chars are male, it's a bit logic, since I'm male myself.
I make sure they look ok, that's why I deleted my warrior.
Actually a woman pm'ed me saying my elementalist was hot...guess not just horny teen boys hunt after the opposite sex.

One word: Tomb Raider.
Eh, that's been two words, but hey, all the guys I know have been spoiled by Lara Croft.
Other than that, it's mainly visuals for me. If I am going to stare at somebody's back who is running around for hours on end, better it be somebody pretty. And honestly, I don't find the males in GW very attractive. Have you ever seen (I guess there are a couple, here and there) a male warrior? I am totally repulsed by their appearance. And the necros get the second prize. The only male models I would touch with a two foot stick would be the rangers, were it not for the fact(*) that female rangers are so much more gorgeous by far.
And my tertiary reason is roleplaying (combined with equal opportunity). Roleplaying part is that I like the idea of ass-kicking ladies. And when I play a single player game where I get to create a party of four/six characters, I make half of them male, half of them female. In GW too, half of my "solo party" is female (1 divided by 2, rounded UP
).
In game, I prefer people to refer to my characters as "she" and I always refer to my RL friend guildies (whom I know to be male and happen to have female chars too) as "she" in team chat in presence of strangers. They are virtual characters, we are not them, and they are female, dangit! I also type things like "yay" after a successful combat to roleplay a cutesy kickass lady. However, if somebody in my friends list whispers me if I'm male, I tell them yes, IRL, I am. Not that I get that too much. Regardless of your characters, most guys automatically assume you're a guy. When they encounter a genuine female behind the avatar, they are surprised and/or embarassed. Must be really annoying for the girls out there.
The only time I was hit on was from that creepy necro guy, right after I have seared the giant W/N girl that I created for my wife. It was a funny incident. My computer haven't even finished loading the Ascalon City when he said (in local chat, no less) "Hey sexy, wanna join my guild?" I somehow knew he was referring to me, even though the textures wasn't loaded and my screen was all but empty. I whipped open my cape (it was hidden as I always keep it that way) and he called me a "sviker fuker". Still puzzled as to what that means.

I would like to take a moment to speak on behalf of the adolescant boys being mentioned as the main perpetrators in this forum. I am 14 and as such i crave Boobies as the vampire craves blood, and i dont believe people put enough consideration into the matter when they call us "horny little gits".
It is true we are very, very and sometimes annoyingly, horny and i apologise on behalf of my "people", but please just try and remember what it was like when you were a teenage boy, desperate and uneducated, beset by acne and homework.
So the next time a dribbling teen makes you feel uncomfortable in your female avatar, just flash them a bra strap and be as understanding as you can, thank you.
Oh and also "gay rights for gays" Davith; little Britain ( teh only gay in the vilage)

Pin-up factor. I have yet to make a female character but I plan to come Factions. After playing through the game with all male characters let me tell you one thing. Staring at the backside of a guy jogging along for an hour or more at a stetch gets dull. At least a curvaceous female form would give me something pleasant to look at.
Ishmaeel
Haha. Martian, I want to adopt you if your parents throw you out for too much honesty and twisted humor.
Winterclaw
I play both male and female characters. The male is usually my main character (the only PC I've finished GW with is my male warrior) and then the other slots are filled with females (because they look better). And whatever happens after that happens. For instance I've been toying with the notion of deleting my male warrior to make a monk.
As long as you are honest about your RL gender when asked (if asked), then it isn't a problem with me. I usually assume that 90% of the people playing the game are males, reguardless of PC gender.

Same as winterclaw, my main is male, and 2 secondarys are female. Another male ranger. And thats it. I don't think its wierd, Unless people start having "fun" with their characters. Then its disturbing.
mega_jamie
I tend to make female characters, maybe its because i'm gay and something in me is trying to be even more feminine, who knows.
When factions comes out im making a female Assasin, because the female Assasin dance is better.
My first character was female, but currently all mine are male, I avoided female with necro because the box are has female necro and i thought everyon ewould be using it. I made then deleted a female monk, and followed it up with a male monk, becuase all the japanese names i come up with sound more masculine than feminine.
And I have a male warrior because I thought female ones look weird. And again with my ranger when i remkae fo rfactions its gonna be male because i saw better hairs for male rangers, and thats the only reason im deleting him in the first place.

I made a female necro and ranger cause i hate the way male necros look and i prefer the way female rangers look as opposed to the male ones. its that simple.
DJ Josh
my warrior and monk(main on each account)are both male only because they look better than the fem versions + most 55 bots i have seen in the past seem to be fem monks.my other 4 chars are female because (imho) they look better and as some have stated already,i would rather have to look at a fem's behind for many hours a day than a males.
also i always tell the truth of my gender on the rare occasions i'm asked.
side-note,my wife uses my 2 spare slots and she has a female and a male char so women cross-gender aswell.
but at the end of the day,who cares who plays what gender(unless your sad and are trying to pick someone up in the game).

I play both male and female characters myself I have 2 male and 2 female characters as of now. The reason I choose Female is becasue some of thearmors I like to craft and wear tend to look better (some combinations of armors look better as well)
Misc Merik
I made all female chars without thinking about it really. Made my war female because the male macho war screams retard to alot of people myself included. Monk is female because I liked the look of the armors more. Lastly my mesmer is female mainly because well.... they look alot better than thier male counterparts imo. My assassin in chapter 2 will be male because after seeing a screen of the 15k armor for male assassin I decided wow that looks cool, and the general appearence of them clicked pretty well with me to. Not overbuilt like war, just wirey enough to be ignored until the other guy goes O crap he did not just gank me. <3 assassin

People should stop bad mouthing the male mesmers also, so what if they have some funny hairstyles? They have charming faces and stylish clothing!
BDStyle
I have
Monk (male)
Ranger (male)
Ele (female)
Mesmer (female)
Why?
because the male ele+mesmer look distinctly feminine, so why not go the whole hog?

well i play both female and male char, i think on what armors they get, how would they look, some male can be crazy, mad and cool - like some of the necros, and females are often "better to look on", so sometimes i make a male crazy one or a mysterious female, anyway, it's better for a guy to look on a females back while walking from ascalon to hell's precipie. and armors......i think, even females out there have to admit that the mesmer fow armor looks a lot better on female then the male, while necro fow is best on male....my opinion.
well anyway, most guys likes to watch a female moves around rather then a male, wich is very normal, if you take a walk around, do you want to look on women or men?

Warrior (female) <--- Male armour looks shit
Ranger (male) <--- First char so wtf
Monk (male) <--- Tats look stupid on women imo
Ele (female) <--- Male ele dance, enough said
Mesmer (female) <---- FoW armour, what else?
Necro (male) <---- Necro dance ftw!

I'm not gay (though my wife suspects otherwise, go figure) or a cross-dresser but I philosophically do wonder what it is like to be a female, that's another reason I make a point of making gal characters in games where available. I am happy with my current gender and appearance (even though I was not given the option of customization) but sometimes I wish we had more than one character slots in real life.

I'd like to second the earlier comment about male elementalists looking crap. You can see where the artist's time went in that class. I have a male ele, and if I was offered the chance to reroll their physical appearance to be female I'd take it immediately, I think they look shit.
Alleji
I will sign up under the "look at a female backside for hours" column.

Although I wouldn't mind staring at a Female character everytime I play, the reason why I now only play as a Male character being a male myself is simple..
I don't like being referred to as "She", "Her", or even sometimes "Honey" by other players. And I also hate being hit on by horny teenagers and dirty old men in the game.

Doesnt anyone think of their character as an actual character? It seems like everyone chooses their character because they look pretty or because their armor looks good. IMO being not pretty in this game gives you more character than being pretty, simply because most people choose x face for their ele, or y armor for their warrior. I suppose it doesnt matter so much you just see your character as a means to play the game, and not your character as a lens to play the game through.

Does anyone actually believe GW is an actual role-playing game?
The RP in the RPG is pretty lame in Prophecy, so I hardly think that the characters I create actually have background, motivations, etc.

Avarre
I hold no stance on it really...
I think it's somewhat known I made a female character because I didn't like the male design for mesmer. I don't play the character as an extension of myself, just as an avatar in the game.
If people hit on the character in game, I don't really care, it's not me. If they get personal... then I have a problem. I haven't really had any problematic situations on my female character, so meh.
People can play whatever they like... although if males make female characters and get to 'into' the character role, it's a little odd. To each their own rp-playstyle, I guess

I'm going to stare at my character for a long time, so I might as well stare at the girl
The only male character I have is my warrior, rest is female.

That's why the only reason I make female chars is
a) to break monotony (only men running around would be quite boring)
b)boobs 'n' butts.

My first three characters were male. Then my buddy bought the game and made a female character and I teased him for it. So then I made a female character to play through the game with him to show him I wasn't taking it seriously. So then my wife made a male character so she wouldn't be left out of the fun.

I've played this game for 10 months and I never even created a single male character. (Simply because their way to ugly)
d3kst3r
I often use female characters because when I play Guildwars I always create and delete lots of PvP characters for the sake of adapting in GvG and HA. Since I don't hold any kind of sentimental feeling for the characters I create (since I see them as disposable) I tend to prefer using female characters simply because they look attractive and that in itself is a small novelty.
PS. My main PvE characters are all male.

I have 4 male characters (W,N,E,R) and 2 Female (Mo,Me)
I created a male mesmer at the beginning, got him to level 20 then deleted him. Female Mesmers have a lot more variety in the armor than the males.
As for the monk, I just didn't like the male monk models. Plus when I had created a female monk to help someone in presearing, I noticed that when she walked backwards she had this really funny animation to her butt. So I rerolled one to take to post and called her "Badunkadunk Munk" Unfortunately while wearing tats, the butt doesn't have that animation anymore.

Funnily enough, the only time I've been seriously hit on in the game was when I was playing my male elementalist. All my other characters are female, and apart from the rare juvenile comment or act (some idiot ran up to my warrior and used 'boo'--it looked like he was fondling her boobs), I haven't had a problem with my female characters. But I'm not chatty--when I'm in a group, I'm not interested in gabbing about anything but the game. For me, the game isn't a glorified chat room.
I agree that female characters are treated differently. They do tend to be more forgiven when they screw up, but they're also not taken as seriously. Yesterday my female elementalist was out with a group doing Aurora Glade and they kept running around in circles because they insisted on following, the male warrior, despite me saying several times that I knew the way.
I don't care what gender people play in the game as long as they don't lie about their RL gender. When a male playing a female pretends to be a female in RL, that crosses the line into 'creepy' behaviour, IMO.

me = male.
1st decide on a profession/build
2nd decide on a name/ charac name decides gender (pretty much, if it's a male name, it's a male charac, and vice versa if female)
3rd I make it.

I am a girl, and I rather play girl characters. I pretend it's me out there.
