Also, +68 armor is a lot - perhaps too much. I know MoNo does the run w/o Dolyak or WY!
It's important for us each to be in our comfort zone, but trying to shrink that zone down from time to time always helps
Just some friendly advice ok first thing ,
i take charge cause i have no strength therefore sprint is 8,
if u noticed everyone who takes stregnth into their attributes always use it for doylak sigit , and it goe to about 36 armor at 12 and u get slowed badly , and earthmagic at 10 is +48 armor so fair nuff considering i can feed the remaining attrreibute into tactics or axe + i like infinte sprint/charge makes the run easier with a bad skale spawn , i kill the spiders quite fast so i'm happy with the build. and nothing wrong with having "too much armor" lol, just makes your run safer, and as they all same more defence = less offence , well thats how flurry helps , i spam penatrating blow and executioners strike in the flurrys and as Racthoh confiermed only effects base dmg.
and no i would not want to farm other parts of FoW casue a mesmer or necro will have enchatment removel for armor of thw earth , i have armor of the earth up hile killing the spiritwoods and spiders. it seems to work nicly but i'll change back to the old w/mes for physical resistance but that means i lose flurry which acauly slows the run, thing is i dont like taking strength , the only times i ever use doylak is when i'm doing a seriosuly defence farming build for the hardest of places where my strength is acauly 15, more armor the better as long as u can keep your dmg output good , just a little bit of friendly advice.

I have posted on my Guild forums what I feel to be a very comprehensive FOW soloing guide. It is focused less on one specific build, and how to adapt your own build / overcome the innate difficulties with this run.
Here is the link: http://p3.forumforfree.com/here-vp845-rfe.html#845
It can also be found at GWO, but I am using that thread as the primary for this guide since I can update it at will.
I hate to sound presumptious, but would you consider including a link to my guide at the bottom of your original post, Racthoh? I ask mainly because while some of the information is redundant, much of it is not.

This my theoretical build for killing Shadow Ranger and Abyssals. I have both of the shields and the axe I mentioned.
W/Me
Cleave
Watch Yourself
Soothing Images
Distracting Blow
Dolyak Signet
Physical Resistance
Healing Signet
Illusion of Weakness
Full glads + sup absorb + sup vigor + ascalon boots + alt armor for running
Perfect Zealous Summit Axe of Shelter (15 stance)
+8 vs blunt / -2 enchant Eternal Shield
-2 enchant / -2 stance Ornate Buckler
My plan is to proceed through he Spiders as normal, let the Shadow Beasts kill themselves against me, then run (cautiously) to the Tower of Strength.
When I get there, I would use my flatbow to pull an Abyssal. I would hide behind an obstruction so I can fight only the Abyssals, while the Shadow Rangers uselessly plinked arrows at the terrain. I would use Soothing Images to shut down the Abyssals adrenal gain (Id have to clump em together, shouldnt be a problem). Dolyak Signet, Watch Yourself, and Physical Resistance all stacked should give me 223 armor including shield, or 231 if I use the +8/-2. I would have 9 absorption with the first shield, 7 with the second.
Illusion of Weakness is to A) give me a buffer zone B) trigger the -2 enchant on my shield. Physical Resistance also triggers the -2 on my shield. Distracting Blow is to shut down the Shadow Ranger's Troll Ungent once I get to them. Im considering some form of energy gain, as Watch Yourself might (this is theoretical after all) prove to be useless in the face of Dolyak+PR.
Is it possible to get past the Shadow Army at the very start without a speed boost?

The Shadow Army will break off eventually, but I wouldn't bank on it. There is a good chance they would make quick work of you. You would probably need another shield with +8 vs. fire because of the Fireballs and Incendiary Bonds.
Blade Rez
Well Raccoth. Ty much, i got 2 obsidian shards on 2 different runs against the driftwoods. However, none on the spiders.... Also, i killed all the spiders, and didnt get the last dryder in the cave so walked into the cave then the 3 spiders "crawL" down behind you.... Yeah, that got me... =\. Also, the first safe spot has a problem since sometimes (more increasingly now) Ancient Skales will spawn there, and sit there. =\

you can pull the shadow patrol that comes to the skales. for some reason, they hate each other more than they hate you. if a shadow monk is present, you can count on the shadows winning and leaving you an area clear of skales. or you could just run through while they fight.

there was a minor update in FoW a few days ago, I didn't know what it was .I don't know if I noticed this before when doing spider runs about 2 weeks ago, but now all the spiders use healing spring even though there not getting attacked. Now I have to run away wait for them to break up then run back in when a few are not close to eachother. you guys notice this?
Blade Rez
I did a run in FoW on sunday, and in groups of 3, only 1 spider uses Spring, after you kill it, then another switches to it. When exactly was it?
Racthoh
I've noticed they've always been doing it. It seems this way (not saying for 100% though), if you aggro them with a range weapon out they will not using Healing Spring they will use Apply poison. Engage them with your sword/axe out and they'll use Healing Spring. Whether it's just a coincidence, I'm not sure as I haven't done a spider trip since someone last asked for a demonstration. It's just what I'm recalling from memory.
When they decide to pair up, I've always recommended that you pay special attention to the one you're not attacking so you can switch targets to interrupt the trap.

Murder In China
Is it me or do the Ancient Skales now spawn closer to the Cave entrance?
Scrilla
Racthoh, thanks very much for the build. I've messaged you in game (IGN: Ethan Hunt) before to tell you about some of my frustrations with avoiding the skales, but I've finally managed to put together a successful run at it. 2 shards dropped for me off the first group of driftwoods. After that, I knew I would probably have a good run. This was a fun challenge, but I can see how it gets easier with the more runs I take on.

Luck of the draw, just it makes it a little harder.

I have noticed that the spiders refuse to break apart. Couple weeks ago I was doing the run fine but this week everytime I went down I could not pull a group at all. Dont know if others are having this problem.

Hi,
Don't know if this has come up yet but here is the build I use, with great effect:
W/ME
cleave, exe, cyclone, sprint, watch yourself, healing sig, physical resistance, dolyak sig.
8 inspiration
8 strenght
10 tactics
12 axe
other than this i just follow the guide and i can take out the spiders with relative ease. Besides, this builds works great with the stance equipment I'm using.
I'll definatly be trying the W/N solo build next.
Cheers,
Courage

Just did a run, and it's the same as when I started doing it. Haven't noticed any change, except that chests don't seem to want to spawn for me anymore.

Just bad luck =P I had 3 gold chests in one run last night.
This is not even the most profitable place to farm, but I still love it to death.

I am so Baffled. I have tried ur build several times, and a modified version of it for myself. And have merely wasted about 16k. I can kill the Dryders and th twig guys. and can make it through the scales. However, when I go to kill the spider, I die fast as hell. I don;t ever even get a chance to attack, much, because they kill my healing sig everytime and I can't ever get it off. What is ur key that I am not doing.

use healing sig often and always keep your hp above 50% if possible. don't use it only when you get to 25%, because the spiders will punish you for it. and make sure that the spider you are attacking is a little separated from any others so that it is unaffected by any healing springs.
edit: rac, chests hate you.

Agreed on both counts. Cheers to all of you who have helped us unwashed masses do this run. It's been a blast.

I think i found my problem. I have been using the Platemail. Is it better to use teh damage reduction armor? and when like the Ascalon armor says it doesn;t stack does that mean u can buy a full set and still only get the same reduction or each piece doesn;t stack or can u not add a Superior Absorption?
rezha
Nice! I did it, but i cant really do it with W/x, i must use a modded W/Mo that uses Healing Hands (with low healing prayers) to get healed when spiders do too much damage. I survived the whole first spider horde, so doing the rest was easy. I just had to be careful in aggro because Dryder are bad for your hh. Only one shard :/

God this Thread has one heck of a life.

Full gladiator suit with a piece of knights or ascalon on the gloves, feet, or head is the optimal setup.

No disrespect meant, but if you don't know how armour and absorption work you're not really experienced enough to spider farm. There are several comprehensive articles on the subject both on GWG and Other Sites; go read them, and come back when you're done.
riddler251
Honestly I just never really looked into it. I assume now that I have spent all this money on full Knights that one piece still gives you the same amount of damage reduction.

Correct. That's why most people wear boots, gloves or helm only and use platemail or Glad's for the rest. The rune and any shield bonus stack on top of that.
riddler251
Well Crap. I did all that. Got Full Gladiators (with Superior absorption in chest), and then I got the Knights boots. My sword has +7 armor vs physical. My cheild does +7 vs piercing (spiders are rangers meaning its piercing damage) and of course teh shield is max def. But yet I am still taking little 2-3 damage from hits. everyonce in a while I bust out a 0. Argg, that like teh only thing that kills me, I can heal fast enough and still kill to over come the poison.

Does your shield have absorption on it as well? That could make a difference.
Otherwise, all I can think of is that you're not maintaining WY! or Dolyak Signet.

I have a W/N idea. If you have points to spare, couldn't you put in Virulence? The build I'm running is:
Sprint // Flurry // Sever Artery // Galrath Slash // Final Thrust // Watch Yourself! // Healing Signet // Dolyak Signet
But yeah. If you have points to spare and had something like:
Sprint // Flurry // Sever Artery // Virulence // Enfeebling Blood // Watch Yourself! // Healing Signet // Dolyak Signet
... Get all of your skills pumped with Flurry. Then when everything is ready, set off Watch Yourself! and Dolyak Signet if it's available. Keep Flurry on and hit one more time. Then use Sever Artery -> Virulence -> Enfeebling Blood. Instant Disease + Poison + Weakness + Bleeding. Well, not instant. Maybe 5 seconds... but does anything think it'd be a viable build? Or would the Spiders have counterattacks for all of the conditions?
...Also, my gear is:
15k Ascalon Helm, Major Absorp
15k Glads rest, with Minor Tactics/Axe/Strength, Major Vigor
Max/Purple Sword, Req8, 1/1 Zealous, +5 Armor (always)
Max/Collector Shield, Req9, +45 Health/-2 Damage (stance)

Spiders have Melandru's Resilence, so putting conditions on the would only hurt you in the long run.
Rape of Faith
SOME Spider have MR. Some don't.
linkid
They would probably interrupt the 2 second cast enfeebling blood with savage shot.
And every armored cave spider I have used severe artery on used MR
And every armored cave spider I have used severe artery on used MR
Rape of Faith
Well, I thought I read that the ones outside have it, the ones inside don't.
Rape of Faith
Okay. I did my first real run. I spawned all the entrance spiders and killed them. Then I spawned 4 or 5 groups inside and died to the second last one. But I'm not too frustrated. I got two Obsid Shards, Purple/Max unidentified Shadow Shield (I think?), Purple/Max unidentified Chaos Axe (both unid's sold for 6k). So I made about 11-12k on that run =)
I also had an extra axe and grip with +7 armor (vs. physical attacks). So I bought a new zealous axe haft and am going to start running it with an axe. Cleave @ 4 Adren > Final Thrust @ 10 Adren. At least, I think so. I'm going to use Cleave, Eviscerate instead of Galrath Slash, Final Thrust, along with Power Attack.

Is it me, or do the Shadow Mesmers now have Illusion of Haste to keep up to you?
Also, I noticed the Ancients Skales patrol further up the slope down to the beach. Creating less of a safe zone between the Ancient Skales and the Patroling Shadows.

Racthoh
The Shadow Mesmers have always had Illusion of Haste, and I have noticed that those skales seem to be inching there way up the path in my previous few runs. All of the spiders have Melandru's Resilience.
Murder In China
Weird, the mesmer never did try to catch up to me with illusion of haste before...
