I've been playing for 3 months or so. At the beginning i didnt think that money was really a big issue as i had nothing to spend it on, but as you progress further, how are you meant to make money?
By "getting lucky" and finding a really rare item? (how many times /100 kills?)
By farming lots? (surely not, this has been nerfed on a worldwide scale)
By selling and buying? (does Anet really expect us to spend our time doing this?)
By playing the game? (this proves to be distinguishedly unsuccessful)
By eBay? (please vist *lame-e-oh*) (EDIT: on second thoughts, don't, its pr0n i just discovered)
how can we make money without spending our lives on this game?
Sorry if you disagree but i think that there arent enough ways to get money, and a good amount of it.

Just how ARE you supposed to make money?

How much money are you looking to make?
If you want enough to get you by in PvE, with the best Draknors armor and decent weapons, then you'll easily get the 20K you need for the armor just by playing, and you'll find perfectly good weapons (greens & collectors). All you need to do is pick up loot and turn it in at the merchant and you'll never be short.
If you want 1000 plat for bragging rights or absolutely NEED that perfect gold max rare skin or want to go for FoW armor, then you need to either speculate or farm rare items/max upgrades/shards/ectoplasm to sell to other players.

- farm 100k / hour months ago (now nerfed)
- abuse new players (buy low, sell high)
- be there the day they reseted prices, and buy 1000 ectos for 200k. (nerfed)
- farm underworld (nerfed)
- run players (more and more nerfed)
- buy on ebay (sadly the only realistic honest way to get fissure armor)
so : you play since the beginning and you made money, or you're new and say thanks to arena net

I'll be very honest. Right now making money is no easy task. If you are not already rich your stuck at farming at some really specific locations only and dependant on the demand for some specific items to sell upon finding.
The only other piece of advice I can offer is try to refocus your gaming goal. ask yourself why you want something. its it really worth it just for one item you may or may not use? is there a cheaper or free alternative to the most expensive items in the game that will work just as well until you can either afford to buy one or find it yourself? In most cases a normal player will be able to answer at least one of these as yes. When that is the case you soon learn that all the prices and items in the game are essentially worthless. And all that is driving this ridiculous economy is a unrealistic trading system, that is curved on the extensive greed of other players for the uber items. However the real players of the game soon learn it is not about the goodies you have but what you can do with what you already have or can get from more legitimate sources. Once you come to this truth, gold is not that big a deal. sure it makes life easier, but when doesn't it? However any weapon in the game can have a collector or pickup item equivalent that may not be "PERFECT" but are equally as good to have in a battle. And in the long run if you get rid of it later its not great loss either...
Just think about it some before worrying about some multi thousands of gold item. typically its not that big a deal anyway. that's the way the game is designed. Its about playing the game, not about acquiring goodies....
good luck

Good luck buying FoW armor for new players.
Farming is still possible, but is awfully long and boring, and the most profitable places are utterly nerfed.
Running people is a possibility, but there are too many runners, and there is always the risk to be scammed.
You can farm high level chests or hunt greens in sorrow's furnace.
So, big money is no more a reward for dedication and perseverance, but for pure luck.
Oh, and you can hope for random retarded moves like making HoD swords no more available.

It has been pointed out before that ANet seems to be doing it's best to keep players poor. As solo farming gets more and more difficult, and as global drop rates fall, earning money becomes a pure chance thing, were you have to depend on getting a rare drop and finding someone who farmed a lot around release to buy it.
The argument is, of course, you don't need the expensive stuff. That is true, droknar's forge armor and a collectors sword work just as well as obsidian armor and a gold fellblade. One does wonder, however, why these items are in the game if ANet will not provide efficient means of getting them? Shall we all just rely on luck? Were these items ment solely for the players who farmed within the first 2 months of release?

i am saving my gold for what is in chapter 2.in the meantime it is Drok armor and collectors weapons
would i like everybody bowing to me in my godley armor with the unique weapon only a few people can see only when you are out of town?
sure would but am i willing to pay the price for it?
NO WAY
so i play for the fun of it when i feel like it.
i also give away most of the imperfect golds/purples i find as lower level peeps seem to get a kick out of them.
one thank you is better than a few k in my opinion
