Official GW Scams Thread (no posting names)

So, Flee, if you are walking to your vehicle and you get run over by someone going way over the speed limit, is it your fault? You knew the dangers of walking to your car; there are inherant dangers in every part of life, inherant risks you must accept whenever you are doing anything.
They aren't hating the game, only the players that deem it necessary to con others out of their valued time; it takes time to amass items in game to convert them so as to better your character and make the game more enjoyable, time that these "con artists" are taking away from the casual players that are so excited to finally be getting their hard earned item, to finally see that the Superior rune of vigor is only a minor, is a very disappoiting feeling filled with a slowly growing, all-consuming rage against those that have to steal from others because they feel they must, that there is no other way to go about it. It is not sloth or insipidity that causes this to happen, a mere rush of exctasy may override the previous controll that you had been exercising up to that point. Not all people are as sure of themselves in trading as you claim to be with your cold-hearted reply; they simply want the protection in trading to be more apparent so when someone makes a change or the likes of any of these scams occur, they will be aware of it; when a game is a means of escape and cool down from the chaotic world of life, we do not want those that make our days miserable to follow us into paradise.

worst. analogy. ever.
To simplify my statement for you...
Take responsibility for YOUR actions. if you dont verify the items then don't blame the game design or the scammer. The only reason you got scammed is cuz you clicked accept.

And yes, when walking accross the street, LOOK BEFORE YOU WALK. The driver would not get charged if some dillhole stepped out in front of him. So, indeed, you getting hit is your own fault.

Flee, your responses have been troll-like. I came expound in numerous ways on the otherside of the argument and I bet you could also ellaborate a great deal on your thesis, however, please reign in your inflammatory remarks. My conversation ends with you as of this post. This is a warning to you in the future: continue to produce posts that incite argumentative flames or are in the bounds of doing so and the moderators will be forced to step in. I am sorry I addressed your bait, I will not do so in the future.

not really a scam but jeez I hate leechers.
You know those people who join you in a mission then just stand at the start and hope you finish it for them?

Flee hasn't trolled. Please don't offend people just because they think different than you.
Of course scamming is annoying, it should be punished, etc. But if you got scammed it was your own fault (except it was a bug).
And I do feel sorry for someone who got scammed, but it IS your own responsibility to double check what you are buying... You do it in reallife too. If I buy something expensive I check the bill if they charged me the right amount etc. In reallife you do this not because you are afraid of scamming (at least I'm not - I normally trust the companies I buy from) but because mistakes happen. In an online game - you know that there are people that want to scam you - so why not double check? It costs you nothing but a half second...
Changing the game to make it easier to see if you are getting scammed is a good, there is no good reason why someone don't want that to happen (at least, I haven't found one...). But these changes are not number one priority.
Flee
Thank you Schorny.
No, I don't like scamming. It should not be done. But it is. I was saying that it takes 2 people to complete a scam. The scammee is just as at fault as the scammer. Instead of blaming him for you getting scammed, use you brain and protect yourself.
My posts are semi-Troll like, but I am not looking for an argument. I was just annoyed but the abundance of people thinking they weren't at fault for getting scammed.
caveat emptor....

I'm ot sure if this has been mentioned yet, but theres a few people wandering around claiming that platinum gold dye is now available and selling it for 3k+. I'm not sure how successful they've been but some people will no doubt be convinced if they're new to the game...hopefully the price will deter them.

I'm a frugal man...especially when it comes to RPGs...I love them but unfortunately more of them are awful than those that are worth the money. So I spent a good amount of time reading about Guild Wars before I purchased. I played the noob world as an informed noob...and admit to using that to my advantage. Like you I purchased some black and silver dye for under 200 gold....and I spent a good amount of time in towns looking for good deals on dye and immediately turning around and selling it for twice as much. Hey if we can't take advantage of the noobs who can we take advantage of?
Mavrik
I have been very cautious when even being tempted to buy something from another player on the whole basis that I could get scammed. Ran into a guy yesterday wanting $4000 for a single bottle of black dye. Now of course I didn't buy it, I didn't even have $1000 gold pieces yet lol.
Its almost to bad there is not a list of suggested reasonable prices for items people wish to sell or trade so that we can all see if its way over priced or reasonable... And yeah, that your buying the right item your being told you are.

Ok... just to see where everyone stands on this who is responsible, the consumer or the scammer.... who do you think should pay in this situation:
A local man bought a dream home for his wife and kids. It probably cost him a good sum of money but it is perfect: swimming pool, large home, large amount of acrage, and pefect condition house and yard. They believed that this was a great deal, but someone in County Appraisal made a goof. Apparently they had not appraised the house in over 12 years, so now the new home owners are being held reliable for the sum of $10,000 in addition to what they are already payed for the house. The previous owner is not having to pay 1 penny for what happened and as of right now neither does the County; most likely the previous home owner was unaware of the error but he may have been fully aware: the only way these backtaxes can pile up is if the home owner makes improvements to the home without reporting them. The county, while it is admitting that they made the mistake, is still saying that the new home owners must pay the bill. So, who should pay: New owners (they were scammed), the County (they goofed but want to make a profit out of their idiocy), or the Old Owners (they illegally added on to a house and shirked the bill)?
If you are trying to get a rise out of someone, then you are trolling. All of Flee's posts are troll-like. While it isn't necessarily all the scammers fault, if someone were not scamming in the first place, no one would be complaining. There will always be trustworthy to a fault type people in this world and there will always those that try to take advantage of them. I place blame more on the latter because the former do not need the responses that you give. They do not help. Words of encouragement keep people going after being scammed; those of negativity and ones near scathing are not welcome and tend to breed hatred.
"I was in the wrong place and the wrong time but that does not make it right for them to steal from me."

I've seen worse scams than the red dye one. I almost got fooled by one when buying a superior vigor, some guy puts in a sup. vig, i see it then he says "just a sec" then closes window and opens again. He puts a MINOR vior in there (looks the same) then i almost hit accept, but then noticed it thank god.

nope, it isn't

The best solution to scammers is to boycott them altogether. The only advantage I see to buying ANYTHING from another player is to avoid a hunt for whatever said item is. This of course, is a near and dear cousin to cheating in my opinion. Just run through the g-d quest and save your purples, yellows and blues, and salvage/sell all the white crap to an npc. The game characters WILL not put you all through this obviously annoying and controverisal player mechanic of gw.
I don't deal with anyone outside my guild at all anymore, and I have not yet been scammed.

Now admittedly the property owner would have options to file suit against the previous owner, or the title agency, or even the municipality itself. But regardless of who ultimately pays for the "goof" it is still the property owners responsibility.

This isnt so much of a scam, more like a down right nasty deed...
When doing the very first mission i was nearing the end, just where the last piece of Kilns armour is, and just as i went to pick it up my team mate with the other pieces of armour left the game, at first i thought they had simple been the victim of an err=7, but when i mesaged him, i got a reply that sounded a little like this, "Haha, got you you ******g noob, lmfao." Of course it wasnt to big a lose as i simple sprinted the mission after i had completed it and just grabed all the armour, but even still, its something to watch out for.

Hmmm.. I don't know where I stand on this.
Whereas I would never scam someone and would hate to be scammed myself, I think there will always be people who play the market like this. It's a sort of learn by your mistakes thing.
If people have tried to sell me something I know is worth more than what they're asking, I let them know. I try to help people avoid being scammed. But at the end of the day, people will be sneaky like that and although we shouldn't applaud them (cos for some reason they think it's clever), I don't think we'll ever be able to stop them.
Lying is something completely different. If someone sells a weapon to you and asks for 400 more than it's worth cos they know they can get it out of you.. then that's just learning about the game. If someone sells you something they say is one thing but it's another, these people should have their accounts CLOSED.
They don't deserve the right to play with people who have morals.

There are certain elite or collecters items that are very pricey and not very economical to the mid-class character. Superior vigor, sigils, gold items, and black dye are the most common over-priced "hey I'm a rich lvl 20 now so who cares" items. Most scamms happen because of consumers being unaware and rushing into a purchase. But paying too much for something is not a scamm, its a merchant getting over on a unaware buyer. As in rl, you have to research before you buy that dream car or in our case, that dreamy perfect gold weapon.

It call comes down to read before you click. Caveat Emptor has value in this regard.
If you are mad that someone sold you a bad item, then you have to ask yourself how they got that far with the trade: YOU.
I love how people "don't wanna hear it's my own fault" when that is literally what it is. If you were duped, you should have read the item text before getting mousehappy. Sorry, the truth is more annoying that a lie.

Having someone pay too much for an item isn't scamming, its gouging And that is really up to the opinion of the person buying... if I sell a steel ingot for 250gp and another guy sells it for 200gp am I scamming the buyer for making them pay 50gp more then my competitors? No, not really. If they want to shop around then they can. They're paying an extra 50gp for instant access to the steel w/o looking any further. Just as I may pay extra for a DVD if I buy it at a Super Stop and Shop grocery store instead of BlockBuster video or a video-centric store.
If you sell someone a steel ingot for 900gp and don't tell them they can get it cheaper then that is what is called "being a merchant." Who is going to try to sell you something and then say "oh, actually my competitor has it for waay cheaper, go buy from them." -- not a great way to make money or a sale is it? And if they pay the 900gp then it was worth 900gp TO THEM or else they would have told ya "no thanks."

Other thing that's kinda nagging: when you have too much stuff in your inventory an hit "accept" it will say "user cancelled trade" -- when they didn't...the user just didn't have room. It should state that.

I was tricked into buying a Family Sigil from Lord Molvania, he claim it is what the Celestial Sigils become after you cancel your hall. And you can use it the same way as a Celestial Sigil. I lost 40K (a resonable price for a Celestial Sigil) so that alarm didn't go off. And he even explained how to got that way. So as a warning to everyone else. Be wary of this scam/scammer.

Drop Trade Hack/Scam:
Player A has VERY valuable item to sell, and has not played game for more than a couple of weeks. Player B claims he wants to buy, but can't get trade screen to engage in town (multiple trade/cancles). Asks player A to team up and go out of town. Out of town, every time player A puts item in trade window, player B keeps canceling claiming he has connection problem. Finnally doing it enough times, player A drops item while placing in trade window, player B picks up and maps out.
Spoke to player A about it today (while he was asking how to get someone to report incident to) and player B through whisper answered with affirmation that he could care less about gullible _______s and deserved to be scammed. Reported to Arena Net, bug must be fixed or only allow two cancels and time out period.

It sounds like it was a timing issue. The scammer was attemtping to time closing the trade window so that seller miss placing his item on the screen and thusly drop the item and if this is case, its not a bug and no real way to fix it. Many times folks will put items up times for the deal so this wouldn't be fair to those doing things honestly as they work out the trade. The seller may have been too quick to place the item on the trade screen.
Now if was a case of the number of cancellations caused the item to automatically drop to the ground on its own than by all means this most definately is bug.

Something werid is going on right now.
Raw material prices are rising.
Especially for frosted grifon wings, wich is werid because they are easy to farm.
One frosted grifon wing should not be sold below 200-300g each, i dont know why but it seems that 250 wings are worth >40k gold.
this goes into the scam thread because ppl get scammed for their grifon wings selling them for 40gold each.

Just a quick question here... It has been said many times that buying quest items from someone else is useless because you still have to do the quest to get the xp. This is mostly said about the Ashes but is it true for every quest item? I personally gave away and egg (can't remeber the name of it) and a bear skin in pre-searing (at no cost to the other person) just because it was taking up room in my inventory and I had already completed the quests. The other person did indeed get the xp for the quests. (Note: The egg was just to summon the queen worm and the other person did still have to kill it...so I can see that one working out... but what about the bear skin? They did not have to kill a bear, they just took my extra skin and completed the quest)

-Or- it could be that the ashes is a special quest (you need both steps of the quest for experience...finding the ghost, and getting the ashes).
